Just wanted to add..I know why the people here in my province are so anti-English. Revisionist history. They don't realize that it's because had it not been for the British, we would not be speaking French today.
My family have been Monarchists for generations. When we hear that abomination cry of "vive le quebec libre" all I hear is more communist propaganda.
Sorry to derail. Carry on.
No derailment, madam, because this thread's pretty much run its course.
On this monarchy thing, where H.M. the Queen is head of state of Canada, I've always been very confused about sentiments expressed by contemporary Canadians, either apathetic towards the queen, or even hostile.
I'm appalled that there's even non-Quebec Canadians who are republicans.
Yet these are the same sorts of Canadians who whine about "being confused with Americans" or Canada "getting to be too much like America."
What they forget is that the monarchial system in Canada is one of those things that exactly, precisely, clearly, distinguishes them from America and Americans.
Abolish that system, and "goodbye" to anything that distinguishes Canada and Canadians from America and Americans.
I did notice a few years ago that on Canadian ten-cent pieces, for a short time, the "D.G." was omitted from the royal titles on the face of the coins (it's since been restored); the first time I saw that, I figured okay, the "D.G." first, the queen next, and then Canada's just another republic just like America. But as mentioned, the next year, the "D.G." was restored, and continues today.
