Title: where's everybody from (at)?
Post by: franksolich on January 25, 2008, 04:35:04 PM
This seems a good prelude, one of those bands that plays at concerts before the real band appears, to a Friday evening thread--where's everybody from, or at?

Many were acquainted when members of another site, but there's been some new people here, including those sent by P-J Comix of the most-excellent DUmmie FUnnies, and so it might be a good idea to get an idea where members are from, or at.

Personally, that's perhaps why I perhaps possibly maybe "overuse" the term "the Sandhills of Nebraska" in so many comments; it's just a small reminder that I'm posting from a time and place hardly anyone else knows.

Since there's two "Carolinas," utterly different from each other, what's considered "Down East Carolina"?

In North Carolina or South Carolina?

North Carolina.

Downeast was considered basically everything east of Raliegh at one time, I and many others consider it too be more the Craven, Pamlico, Carteret county areas, with the areas east and northeast of Beaufort NC being Down East.

These areas are rich in old fishing communities and boat building. There are probably more boat builders in that area than many other states have total.

If they went to Lincoln, the odds are they're University of Nebraska Cornhuskers, although Lincoln does have Wesleyan University and Union College.

And of course they're fun; they're from Nebraska after all.

Too many people get their impressions of Nebraska, their erroneous impressions, from movies such as Children of the Corn or Badlands; we're actually a very joyous group of people, we Nebraskans.

I mean, hey, don't you feel the joy that radiates from BrownEyedGirl and S Downing and me?

Grouchy people we aren't.

Look!  A hamburger!

More likely, a fine exquisite steak.

Nebraska beef is not ordinary beef; it's the best in the world.

Cattle from South Dakota, from Iowa, from Kansas, from Colorado, from Wyoming, from Montana, get made into hamburger.

Cattle from Oklahoma and Texas get made into those 19-cent sticks of beef jerky one finds in convenience stores.

Cattle from Nebraska get made into those world-famous steaks.

Doubtful. It only happened one year. They said they were bringing thousands, it was more like 15. The also complained about where the cops said they could protest. The fence of the ANGC is about 8 feet from Washington Road. The patrons use that to get through the gates. THOSE morons wanted to protest there. I can assure you, one of those moonbats would have been knocked into on-coming traffic. The place the cops reserved for them was across Washington Road. A plot of land owned by the ANGC and set aside by Hootie Johnson for the moonbats.

They got ZERO support. There were more cops there than there were protesters. **** Martha Burk.

Howdy ya'll !

North Carolina Facts and Trivia (as they pertain to me)
http://www.50states.com/facts/ncarolin.htm

High Point is known as the Furniture Capital of the World.

I work twice a year on what is called "Furniture Market".  I do everything from setting up the furniture to arranging and placing accessories to cleaning and stocking the bar/fridge/snacks.  While "Spring Market" is my favorite, no 2 markets are the same!  Very fast paced and exciting.

The University of North Carolina's mascot, the Tarheels, is a nickname for North Carolinians that supposedly came from the days when NC produced a lot of tar, and someone saw a set of footprints made by someone who had stepped in the tar.

My brother and Dad are/were the only true Tarheels in the family.  Dad was born, raised and is buried in Wilmington.  Dad was career Army and every where he and Mother went, they had a baby!  Brother was born at Womack Army Hospital.

Myself?  I'm the oldest of 3.  I was born in Ft. Benning, Ga.  My niece and her husband just had their 2nd child there.  My baby sister was born in Croix Chapeau, France.  From time to time she still has problems proving she's an American citizen.

My Dad passed away in France in an automobile accident.  I was not quite 4.  He was 27, Mother was 25 and left with 3 babies.

10. Havelock is home of Marine Base "Cherry Point." It is the largest air base in the Marine Corps.

It's been told to me that my Dad hated the Marines!  Why?  In his teen yrs he worked at Carolina Beach which was a popular place back in the '50's for hanging out.  Mother said he complained that the Marines always got the pretty girls on the beach!  LOL!  Oh, well!  They missed one!  (my Mother)

14. The World War II battleship 'North Carolina' is permanently berthed on the Cape Fear River at Wilmington. She was saved from the scrap heap in the 1960's by public subscription, including donations of dimes by schoolchildren.

If you ever get the chance to see it, by all means, go!

17. Krispy Kreme Doughnut was founded in Winston-Salem.
21. Winston-Salem was created when the two towns Winston and Salem combined.

I grew up in Winston Salem.  Lovingly referred to now by my family as "hell town".  Glad I moved away.

22. The Biltmore Estate in Ashville is America's largest home, and includes a 255-room chateau, an award-winning winery and extensive gardens.

Mother's birthday is 12/26, so one yr I took her to Biltmore for Christmas.  Unbelievable!  Breath-taking!  Pictures do NOT do this place justice!  A must see any time of year!

11. North Carolina is the largest producer of sweet potatoes in the nation.

Yuck!  I hate sweet potatoes!

27. Many people believe that North Carolina was the first state to declare independence from England with the Mecklenburg Declaration of 1775.

28. Grandfather Mountain, highest peak in the Blue Ridge, is the only private park in the world designated by the United Nations as an International Biosphere Reserve.

29. The Mile-High Swinging Bridge near Linville is 5,305 feet above sea level. The bridge actually hangs about 80 feet above the ground.

30. Pepsi was invented and first served in New Bern in 1898.

37. North Carolina leads the nation in furniture, tobacco, brick, and textile production.

^Just stuff I thought was interesting.

This site fails to mention our zoo.  I can remember my Granny taking us kids way back when the zoo was just basically a gorilla in a cage with a tire swing!  It's just a hop, skip and a jump from where I live now.

http://www.nczoo.org/tour/

Yep!  I like calling North Carolina home!
Thanks for asking Frank!  ;)

I didn't care for Raleigh.  Creedmoor Mall floods every time it rains.  But you guys DO have the Outer Banks which beats any Florida beach hands down.  And I love me some Krispy Kreme.

edit: North Carolina gave the world Richard Petty.  May God bless the Tarheel State for ever and ever, amen.

I bought a truck from an old man in China Grove, a small town outside of Kannapolis.

Carolina beach would have had the jarheads from Lejuene more than Cherry Point.

Some more facts......

Dook sucks
Dook sucks
Dook Sucks!!!!!!

Pepsi was called Brads drink (I grew up in New Bern)

The original state capitol was in New Bern

Govenor Tryon was a British loving bastard

Blackbeard was killed behind Ocracoke Island

The original name for Beaufort Inlet was New Topsail Inlet, which gets confusing because there is a new topsail inlet also.

Pamlico county was once part of Craven county, it's called down in the county and has the missing district from craven.

The distinct diamonds on the Cape Lookout lighthouse were for the town of Diamond city which was a fishing community, after a bad storm most of the residents moved to Harkers Island.

Core banks was named after the coree indians who had built a bridge of mainly oyster shells across Core sound

there's more, but just from the top of my head

Born in Iowa, raised in NE Wisconsin.
I spent time in South Carolina, Philadelphia, and Jacksonville, FL in the Navy.  After getting out and finishing school, spent 4 years in Orlando, FL.
Now live in WI again inthe middle of nowhere a ways east of Lambeau Field on the Big Pond (Lake Michigan)

Really liked it in SC and FLA, but my family's up here, and I love them.

Born- Tacoma, Washington (McChord Air Force Base) -7 years- *Beautiful country

Lived in- Altus, Oklahoma (Altus AFB, lol) -6 years- *Fine place to be a kid, good people

Lived in- Dayton, Ohio (WPAFB) -16 years- (5 w/parents) *Swell All-American town

Also spent some years in Columbus Ohio (school) and currently live in Cincinnati (work) -almost 3 years-

Parents and both brothers have all moved to Indiana (where most of my "clan" started, so to speak) starting with the parents about 9 years ago and little brother 3 years ago. Dayton, Ohio is "home-ish", Christmas tends to be where the folks are so there's a little Hoosier in me. I'd like to go back to the Great Northwest and give it a shot round them parts. I want to retire (long, long time from now) on the coast (rather "a" coast) and I'm thinking it's either Seattle or somewhere on the Atlantic coast. (between Baltimore at the Northernmost and Jacksonville, FL at the Southernmost)

and now you know more than you ever cared to.  :-) :p

I was six when Six Flags Over Texas (the original) opened in Arlington.  Yep, it's been around that long.

When I was a little lad in south-central Nebraska (the farming part, not the Sandhills and ranching part), the big attraction was in North Platte, where the city park there--named for Buffalo Bill Cody, who had a spread outside of North Platte--had a carousel that was operated during summer evenings, a permanent fixture.

Other than that, we used to have to wait for the carnival to come to town, but it wasn't ever a long wait, at least during the summers, because there were all of these small towns (circa 1-3,000 people) closely together (unlike the Sandhills), and they all had different events that warranted a carnival.

The nearest permanent amusement park (other than in North Platte) was in Minden, at the world-famous Harold Warp's Pioneer Village, which was more of a museum complex than an amusement park of course, but it also had a ride, a carousel that operated every day of the year.  And an antiquity too, so one was riding history when he rode that thing.

.....our very next door neighbors are from Nebraska....they met in college and went to.....Lincoln for school? I dunno... we love them. They are a fun little family.

I love you Frank!   :-*

Born in Chicago, raised in Gary, Indiana until about 9 years old.  Lived in Durant, Mississippi for two years before moving to Kenner, Louisiana.  Graduated from high school there, went into the Air Force and aimed for my first duty station on the east coast.  Unfortunately, they overshot and I ended up in Japan! Lived there 7+ years, met my wife there and daughter was born there.  Got out of the Air Force there and the wife got stationed at the Pentagon.  Lived in DC, Manassas, Virginia, Woodbridge, Virginia, and Germantown, Maryland.  Moved to Wichita Falls, Texas then Carrollton, Texas then a little town with a funny name in the northwest corner of Kaufman County Texas where we are today.  In this entire span of time I've visited Honduras, Mexico, Okinawa, and Korea.  For all the travelling I've done I've got a few more states to go before I cover them all.

--Born in Los Angeles, dad in construction so I lived in most of the western states as a kid, graduated HS in NM (Farmington).
--Joined Navy, went to Great Mistakes, got picked up for ROTC and went to GA Tech for a couple of years.  Screwed the pooch on that, went back AD, Orlando, Idaho Falls, Hawaii, Guam, and back to CA (SD, then LA again).
--Got out of Navy, moved to OC (Huntington Beach area).
--Got tired of CA bullshit, moved to New Hampshire in 2006.

My daughter has a miniature Dutch-flavored windmill in her yard.  That one is a coincidence.  She brought it from her yard in St. Louis.

The faux windmill in the park across the way is just a regular old Texas windmill, much like the ones found in Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska.

I am ready for crawfish season to start. You are right those Chinese ones are tough and don't taste that good. Made some seafood gumbo with crawfish tails and crabmeat. Some expensive eating but damn good. I am so ready to suck some heads on dem crawdads.

mmm, crawfish.

Yes - he was probably there (not 100%, though - the other base is a lot of miles away), but we were more south of that. I remember him complaining about his drive. I left him a message to see what exact city/town we were in. All I remember is dirt roads and oyster/crawdaddy cookouts  :-)

What branch? They have oyster cookouts here but these people don't know what crawdads are, the f'ers. That's one of the ONLY things I miss about Mississippi.

I know where Sandhill is...well sort of! One of my favorite places for chickens is Sandhill Preservation Center. They have some rare and amazing breeds and are well-known for their care in breeding for type (those qualities that make each breed "special"). Plus, they are THE place to go for heritage breeds.

Oh, and I live in Oregon...just south of Eugene, the Berkley-lite of the Willamette Valley. We're a red county (actually most counties in this state are, we just get drowned out by the raving moonbats in Portland and Eugene).

Yeah, but i've seen the green shit that comes out of the rest of it.

That's what you get when you have a bunch of inexperienced Georgians trying to cook'em. Here's how you prep crawfish:

1) Purchase one plastic kiddie pool
2) Fill with water
3) Fill with salt
4) pour in live crawfish

The salt water makes the crawfish regurgitate. You can leave'em in there for a while while you're preparing everything else. You need a container to dump the crawfish in once they're cooked (We always used a wheelbarrow lined with plastic bags).

Other things needed:

Sausage cut into thick slices
New potatoes (about 10 Lbs for every 40 Lbs of crawfish, which is usually a bag)
Half Ears of corn
Zatarain's Crab Boil

Also needed is a gas burner like a fish cooker. Fill the pot about 1/2 -3/4s of the way with water and Zatarain's. After that, it's all about maintaining because you'll be cooking for a while. Crawfish, potatoes, corn, and sausage. Once they're done, empty all of it onto the plastic, grab another beer, and repeat the process.

Oh yeah, and make sure the crawfish are alive before you start cooking.

Not at all! Like I said, I admire your passion for Cajun vittles -- apart from Andouille sausage, the trinity sans carrots (sub bell peppers), a shitload of Tabasco, and keep-that-slimey-okra-outta-my-face, I could wind up eating some of that myself.

That's bait, not edible crawfish. When you go to Louisiana sometime, look at some of their crawfish. They're about 3-4 inches long, not 1. Now, if you have a ditch that's producing 4-inch crawfish, lemme know and I'll bring my traps.

All crawfish raised for restaurants are raised in the same manner catfish are... on a FARM!

No one takes crawfish from ditches anymore, at least commercially.    I know my mom had fun as a kid, taking some bacon as bait, putting it on a string, and dropping it into a crawfish hole (seen at the link below).

Yes.  Really.  I walked out and left my party, who didn't seem to mind the baby roach in my water glass.

We were staying at the La Quinta w-a-y down on the east end.  I walked the seawall all the back to the motel.

Whoa.

A "guest" has been reading this 4-year-old thread; probably a crawler or bot or something.

But it's a good time as any to resurrect it, I suppose.

I'm still where I was four years ago.

By the way, ignore "chris_" on this thread, as it isn't really chris_; this thread remains unfixed from that time chris_ messed up conservativecave, showing himself being the sole poster here.  I disremember how long ago that was; maybe a little less than a year, and it was on a Saturday morning, freaking people out.

If I just count the places where I have received mail, I've had well over 100 addresses.  But, I wouldn't say I lived in each of those places.  My work, for years, required frequent travel.  Born in Detroit, settled in Wyoming for most of 29 years.

I probably answered this way back but will post again.

Born and raised until I was almost 15 in Omaha, Nebraska.

Moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma with my parents and met my husband (then boyfriend) a week before I turned 15.

Got married at 20 and moved to Phoenix, Az so my husband could finish college.

Moved to Lake Havasu, Az when my husband got a job as a boat designer for a custom boat builder.

Moved to Dallas, Texas (1994) when my husband got a job as a toy designer.

Moved to Fullerton, CA (2009) when my husband's company made us transfer or lose his job, let him go two years later after 17 years...he wasn't the only one let go.  Also it wasn't the original company, it had been bought by a well known toy company several years ago.  We lost over $100k (sale of the house) from that miserable experience.  Never ever moving back to California.

Moved back to Texas before my husband had a job  wanted the hell out of CA.  Originally moved back to Dallas but my husband got a job in Austin so we moved there.  It is close enough to my parents (who live in Dallas) to visit frequently. His new job has something to do with GUNS and he LOVES it.  :-)

Born and raised in St Louis, Mo. Graduated from Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, then back to St Louis, then to Poplar Bluff, Mo for a year, then back to St Louis, then to Chicago for a year, down to San Antonio for 7 years, then returned to St Louis.

SR and I moved to Sarasota a little over 18 months ago. He doesn't seem to like my idea of moving back to St Louis (at least I'd be consistent with the rest of my life). I love St Louis, but getting accustomed to Florida. I hate being cold, so maybe we'll stick here, but I miss my family in St Louis so very much.

Unlike BEG, we didn't lose $100k in the move, but did lose close to $30k. Just can't afford to keep on losing. The home values here in Sarasota have gone down since we moved here.

Sure you can...come summer there are wonderful peaches (just ask Rebel... :lmao:) and vidalia onions. :yum:

I was referring to the crawfish.   I am a Louisiana native, and am disappointed at the lack of crawfish.  Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Georgia-grown peaches (I have a great recipe for a peach pie,  and I also get called one quite a bit... LOL).

You can't get crawfish in Savannah?  I don't know, I don't eat 'em.

Have you been to Huey's yet?

I haven't found any places here that serve it yet.   :bawl:

Nope... but it's on my list of places to visit.  :)

Love's seafood serves crawfish et tu fe (spelled wrong I'm sure). I don't eat crawfish; but my sister swears that it's delicious.

I'm fairly certain I posted much earlier in this thread, however, I don't mind repeating.  I'm proud of the fact I have lived in the military family my entire life.  Both of my parents were Air Force intel, met and married in Wiesbaden in 1957.  Mom got out when I was born, and back then there wasn't a choice given.  It became a family tradition, as both of my sisters and I left the military when we were pregnant with our first children.

Dad took us to Georgia (two tours), California, Kentucky, Greece, Alabama, and Texas (three tours, the last one for retirement purposes)

I went to high school and college in San Antonio, then was stationed at Ft. Hood, TX for almost four years :p  Fortunately I was then sent to Frankfurt, Germany, where I met and married my hubby and had our daughter.  I resigned, and a year later hubby was reassigned to Ft. Huachuca, where our son was born.  We then went back to Germany, Stuttgart area this time (although we actually lived way out in a small farming village, Machtolsheim-my favorite posting ever), after the unit was disbanded shortly after Desert Storm we were sent to Ft. Benning, then back to Augsburg, Germany, where hubby participated in "peacekeeping"   ::)operations in Bosnia consisting of dodging bullets and grenades regularly, onwards to Ft. Lewis, Washington, Ft. Belvoir, Virginia, and a final PCS to Ft. Huachuca, where hubby finally hung it up 30 years.  He started as a tank mechanic, re-enlisted in intelligence, and retired as a CW5 All Source Intel Analyst, or whatever its current designation is (the Army tends to reinvent the wheel often), and now works as a contractor.

Ironically he never stepped foot in Korea, although from Ft. Lewis he spent plenty of time in other Asian countries and Hawaii.  He went to Korea for his job a few months ago, and is going back the end of April.  I confess I've no desire to see Asia, Africa or any other continent than Europe again...one reason we're headed for Provence in November for a river cruise.  We did tons of travelling the nine years we spent in Europe, and except for the crazy socialist governments I loved every minute.  Cool rain, green vegetation, castles and cathedrals everywhere you looked, ah, good times, good times.  I've also been to British Columbia and Alberta, and across the border to Nogales eons ago when it was much safer, and visited or at least drove through all of the 48 contiguous states.  Maybe I'll get to the other two someday.

To wrap this up, finally, I live in Arizona and will probably die here although hubby still dreams of retiring for good to Montana or Wyoming.  I've come a long way from that six-week old baby my parents packed up in Savannah and took cross country to California.  Guess I should say I'm an Arizonan now; all I feel for certain is I'm damn glad and proud to be an American.

I was born in Chicago, then my mom and dad moved to Tucson. We moved back to Chicago in 1952 due to some serious problems with my dad's health. Worked in Buffalo, NY, from 07/1963 until I went into the CG in 01/1964.

During my time in the USCG I went to boot camp in Cape May, NJ, then to school in Groton, CT. I got married in Buffalo, NY, on 07/11/1964, lived (due to transfers) in Sherman Oaks, Santa Barbara and San Diego, California, from 06/1964 to 08/1965, then in the CG in Charlevoix, Michigan, from 08/1965 to 01/1968.

Moved back to Illinois in 1968 (that's where my family and the jobs were), lived in Park Forest and now in Crete, Illinois.

We want to move to a western state, like Wyoming.

And now,
