I was six when Six Flags Over Texas (the original) opened in Arlington.  Yep, it's been around that long.

When I was a little lad in south-central Nebraska (the farming part, not the Sandhills and ranching part), the big attraction was in North Platte, where the city park there--named for Buffalo Bill Cody, who had a spread outside of North Platte--had a carousel that was operated during summer evenings, a permanent fixture.

Other than that, we used to have to wait for the carnival to come to town, but it wasn't ever a long wait, at least during the summers, because there were all of these small towns (circa 1-3,000 people) closely together (unlike the Sandhills), and they all had different events that warranted a carnival.

The nearest permanent amusement park (other than in North Platte) was in Minden, at the world-famous Harold Warp's Pioneer Village, which was more of a museum complex than an amusement park of course, but it also had a ride, a carousel that operated every day of the year.  And an antiquity too, so one was riding history when he rode that thing.

he was so messed up by it, that he made his custom title "NOT a chick!". :-)  he's a nice guy, and I hope he comes over.

I remember, he would get very twisted up about that.

.....our very next door neighbors are from Nebraska....they met in college and went to.....Lincoln for school? I dunno... we love them. They are a fun little family.

If they went to Lincoln, the odds are they're University of Nebraska Cornhuskers, although Lincoln does have Wesleyan University and Union College.

And of course they're fun; they're from Nebraska after all.

Too many people get their impressions of Nebraska, their erroneous impressions, from movies such as Children of the Corn or Badlands; we're actually a very joyous group of people, we Nebraskans.

I mean, hey, don't you feel the joy that radiates from BrownEyedGirl and S Downing and me?

Grouchy people we aren't.

I love you Frank!   :-*

Born in Chicago, raised in Gary, Indiana until about 9 years old.  Lived in Durant, Mississippi for two years before moving to Kenner, Louisiana.  Graduated from high school there, went into the Air Force and aimed for my first duty station on the east coast.  Unfortunately, they overshot and I ended up in Japan! Lived there 7+ years, met my wife there and daughter was born there.  Got out of the Air Force there and the wife got stationed at the Pentagon.  Lived in DC, Manassas, Virginia, Woodbridge, Virginia, and Germantown, Maryland.  Moved to Wichita Falls, Texas then Carrollton, Texas then a little town with a funny name in the northwest corner of Kaufman County Texas where we are today.  In this entire span of time I've visited Honduras, Mexico, Okinawa, and Korea.  For all the travelling I've done I've got a few more states to go before I cover them all.

Born in western Michigan. Now I call the beautiful northwest corner of Montana my home.  However, I still spend a significant amount of time in Michigan.  I own, and live in, three different houses during the course of a year.   Keeping track of my mail is a problem.

Born and raised in southern Indiana; went to Purdue and IU, joined the Army in 1975 and I've been around quite a bit since then, mostly in the Missippi watershed and eastwards, plus Europe and some strange unpleasant places.
I call the Missouri Ozarks home now, though presently I'm on a mobilization at Fort Stewart, GA, which is probably the last substantial active duty I'll be doing in my career (and it'll be my 5th DD 214).
