I need advice and lodging!! My college just pulled funding for our trip to the Wall Street protests!

I go to *Unnamed Private Liberal Arts College* in Kentucky. This week, our SGA managed to raise $10,00 over a matter of days to send 50 students on a tour bus to the protest this weekend (we have a four day weekend prior to midterms). Several college departments and campus organizations contributed funds to make this happen, and we were all set to leave tomorrow at 5:00 PM. However, today the college suddenly changed their line, and although we obliged every request they made, including finding faculty and staff to sponsor us, and preparing a detailed safety plan, they pulled $8,000 of our funding two hours ago, and refused us access to any college resource, including transportation.

We are now desperately trying to make alternate arrangements. We have pooled together what funds we have, which isn't much considering that this college only admits students from low income backgrounds (I'm identifying the school right there, but I don't really care). We are working out transportation details, but one of our biggest needs is a place for students to stay in the area. All hostels are full, and we can no longer afford to stay at a hotel. We are trying to come up with tents and camping gear, but again, our resources are limited. If anyone has any advice to offer, please post it in this thread. If you have a place where a couple of students could stay, PM me for more details.

Interesting, they raised 10k then suddenly just took 8k away.
Sadly none of the DUmmies are going to help him or her pay for a motel room.

1. I suggest you stage your own event there in Kentucky.

You'll make a bigger impact than you will by traveling. Gather your friends and allies together and do something where you are. Just my opinion.

You can't spare $10 to help out a fellow moonbat?

16. Thank you for the advice.

We would probably need one bus, assuming it can seat 50 people. $50 a person may still be too much--I think our total budget right now is at maybe $3,000. We are contributing as much as we can out of our own pockets, as well as our food stamps, and hopefully we'll get more individual donations from faculty, and from some of the local liberal churches (there are more than you would think in this part of Kentucky) so we may yet be able to pull something together.

It warms my heart to know that this DUmmy dines every night curtsey of the taxpayer.  :whatever:

13. That's definitely an option.

In this case, there's a particular individual in authority who undermines a lot of student-led, progressive initiatives. Considering the history and legacy of this particular college, this person is at the wrong institution, and the student body will be making efforts to get this person to change the M/O or leave.

We have protested locally, and will continue to do so. However, at the moment we intend to go forward with the original plan so many of us worked so hard to pull together. We have a place at the heart of the movement, and we're going to try to get there if there's any way we can.

So some teabagger is keeping them from going.  :mental:

15. Good luck, but I'd definately look for a way to publicly embarass "this person"

Get the dirt on him and go public with it.

I may not lock my doors while sitting at a red light and a black man is near, but I sure as hell grab on tight to my wallet when any democrats are close by.

What is an SGA?  Did the school put the kibosh on the whole plan?

I really dislike it when the primitives use acronyms.

It's like they're trying to appear as if they know something the rest of us don't.

But actually all the primitives appear is.....stupid.

Sounds to me like some parents got wind of this, and called the school with the simple question......"WTF are you loons doing with our tuition money......??".

And the school caved......

They are living up to the typical liberal standards in that their first thought when they need something is to ask someone else for it rather than earning it themselves.

He's talking about Berea College, which requires all students to be charity cases to be eligible for admission.

So these ingrates, who have lived off the taxpayer their entire lives, want to protest against the system that has fed them from the cradle.

The Berea College alumni facebook page has a discussion going about the school pulling the funding:

I had no problem with it. But then I go back far enough to have had to deal with TWX messages. They charged by the letter and spaces. About the only words usually not abbreviated were "I" and "a".

So, instead of attending classes, you want to go "have fun" protesting.

We now know it's the some old BS that protesting is all about.

GOBUCKS, at first glance I thought you meant the tar pits.   :lmao:  Then I remembered it was La Brea.

I wonder if any of these "need a place to stay" pleas has ever been successfully executed, with a nice time had by all.

I think TVDOC is exactly right, the parents got wind of it.  This is 4 days before midterms?  Ever thought about getting ready for those?

Funny I have midterms coming up as well. Guess what I will be doing this weekend.

What protesting is all about for hippies, DUmmies, and all the other freeloading bums, is a chance to openly buy and sell illegal drugs.

Nothing more.

Reading between the lines, it sounds a whole lot like the college put up $8,000 plus a bunch of non-monetary support like buses, then the moonbats got their mommies and daddies to put up another $2,000, then saner heads prevailed at the college.

Berea College's Statement from the Alumni Page:

On Wednesday, students approached College administrators to provide support for a trip to New York for them to participate in the “Occupy Wall Street” event. When the College became aware of their plans, we too got involved in working with the students to ensure the educational value of such an experience as well as details regarding transportation and their safety and well-being. Despite the efforts of many, there simply was not enough time to coordinate details that would ensure reasonable safety for the students before their scheduled departure. Because 50 students had signed up, we were particularly concerned that there was only one faculty member who was able to accompany the group.

College administrators have been working very closely with the students over the past three days, and have expressed to them our willingness to continue to work with them toward a safe and educationally valuable experience when all of the procedural arrangements can be met.
