My Dad's background was half Irish and half Alsatian, from the family name one of the more German-speaking parts of it I'd say, all coming over in the 19th Century; the Irish early and the Alsatians after the French lost the War of 1870. 

My Mom's ancestry was Welsh and lowland German with a lot of Native American plowed into the mix, both sides of her family had been in the Virginia/West VirginiaPennsylvania hill country since some time before the Revolution, and had been first settlers in parts of it.

Father's side is English, Scots, and Welsh.

They came here during the 1630s; all Protestants.

Mother's side is Slovakian, Jewish, Hungarian, and Brandenburgian, probably some long-ago gypsy.

They came here during the 1870s-1880s; all Roman Catholics.

Physically, I've been told I resemble the Welsh ancestors, for whatever that's worth.

I've been picking up where my grandfather left off in the family ancestry and have found that when factoring in both maternal and paternal sides, I am 90% English with 5% German and 5% Irish thrown in. I can trace both sides to Colonial America (actually beyond to Europe but anyway...) and even found some inter-marrying that took place generations ago so my parents are distant cousins!! Some of their ancestors even came over on the same boat. So weird!

I was shocked that both sides were SO English as I thought I was more of a mutt all of this time. LOL you're probably wondering why I wasn't as shocked over the "parents being distant cousins" thing huh? Well given that they traveled in what appears to be the same geographical and social circle, there weren't a lot of options!!! And I also found several cases of 2nd or 3rd cousins marrying. So twisted.

The most interesting part is that both sides have a long and consistent history of sacrifice and service to America starting with the Revolutionary War. Suck it DUmmies!!!

My dad and aunt are both redheads, and they tan easily.  I take after my mom with super fair skin.  I can tan, but it is more likely that I burn.  My shoulders and knees hardly tan at all, but they freckle.  I rarely get freckles anywhere else.

My husband is 100% Irish, and he gets a very dark tan in the summer.    He used to tease his father that there must have been some Spanish blood that made it's way into the lineage at some point in time, which always sent his dad through the roof (they being purist Irish and all).   LOL.

Adopted but I suspect I am 100% redneckian.

My adoptive parents are Eastern Europe all thrown into a blender and Melungeon on my mom's side.

I'm Black Irish on my Mom's (paternal) side, came over in the late 1890's to 1900's, most perished in the Galveston flood. The maternal side was mostly Native American, Choctaw and Cherokee.

On my Dad's side I'm German, Choctaw, French, and some other southern tribe types in there.  :-)

I had paternal great's that fought in the Civil War, one brother from WV was Union and the other was from VA and fought in the confederacy.

I have Civil War Veterans on both sides.  One was a Confederate soldier from Virginia, and 2 were Confederate soldiers from Texas.  The two from Texas spent time in the same Union POW camp, then the younger became the son-in-law of the older once the war was over.  I've often wondered how that happened, and if there was some great romance in my family history  :).

Lessee . . . My paternal grandfather was 100% Irish.  He married a woman whose parents escaped Russia when Lenin started his stuff in 1905.  My mother's side . . . Her father was English, mostly.  Judging from pictures that I've seen of his family, they were 100% English.  There's ancestors of his that fought on the Patriot side of the American Revolution.  He married a woman (who was born in NYC) who didn't speak English until she was 16--my aunt has her birth certificate, and it's in Italian.

So, I've got 25% Irish, 25% Russian, 25% English, and 25% Italian.

My mom was from Austria, so 1/2 is completely accounted for.

My paternal grandfather had an English name, for what that's worth, have not traced his family at all.  But my paternal grandmother came from a mostly Swedish background.

My maternal grandparents were a Baron and Baroness before WW2, so my mom always told us we had purple blood...half red-blooded American and half blue-blooded European.   :rotf:  I remember believing that as a kid, and couldn't figure out why I bled the same color as everyone else.  :rotf:

I'm 50-50 Swede (about 90% directly from Sweden, the other 5% from Swedes already here, some for a generation or two) and German (about 95% directly from Germany, some for a generation or more).

My wife is 50-50 German and Irish, many of whom were first and second generation offspring of immigrants. One g-g-grandfather was in the US Navy during the Civil War.

I am keeper of our Family Tree, with almost 7300 individuals in it, going back to about 1580.

It's hilarious how many "Cherokees" we have here. Here in OK, we actually know which tribe, be it Kiowa, Cheyenne, etc. we are descended from.  :rotf: :tongue:
