I live in Grizzly country and I carry that exact same piece except I load 700 grain solids.  They define the word thump.

I have been charged by a Grizzly and it is not for the faint of heart.  They come at you fast.  A 338 Win Mag to the noggin ended the issue.

I remember you telling me about that load on pre Paulbot invaded CU. Still haven't got around to trying it yet.

I'm changing my powder charge from H110 to Lil'Gun. A little less in ballistics but it meters better. I shouldn't have the spikes for upper loads.
Come to think of it, unions do create jobs. Companies have to hire two workers to do the work of one.

Who needs a gun? Just bring Chuck Norris with you.

I remember that episode!

I use Lil Gun as well.  Read somewhere though that it may cause erosion in the forcing cone.  I do use the Lil Gun with the big 700's.  If you ever use them crimp the devil out of them, as they will creep forward and cause the cylinder to lock up.  I now have the first two rounds loaded with 700's and then have three 440 Gr LBT's.  If I have not stopped Mr Griz with the first two, he will be on me and I might as well pull the remaining three into him while he is on top of me.

We got black bears around here. My .44Mag does just fine, but Grizz is a whole nuther cupcake! I'd have to invest in a .45 ACP in order to feel remotely protected! You have to put a grizz down in 1 or 2 shots or your gonna be his next meal, even if he dies later! My SonIL has family in Alaska. They hunt the monsters! I've seen pics of their paws the size of a basketball and they stand on their hinds over 7 1/2 feet! They pistol up with .50 cal. Not sure what manufacturer.

My 'ol malamute/wolf hybrid got between a momma black bear and her 2 cubs while we were fishing a few years ago. Thank goodness just the noise of the .44 scared her off! Sure don't want to orphan a coupla cubs!

9 rounds into a bear?  Even a .45?  Sounds like he ****ing missed with every one of them.

Not at all.  A .45 is not a particularly deep penetrator, and only a heart, brain, or spine shot will drop most large critters in their tracks, or almost in their tracks.  Of the three, the heart is the most likely since the bullets are unlikely to reach the spine (Except perhaps one going right through the bear's open mouth into the back of the throat).  I've shot a deer straight through the heart, one round of 7.62x39 soft-point, and then seen it run 75 meters before collapsing.

Anything but one of those instant kills, even 9 .45s, and you may have mortally wounded the bear, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's going to quit, either.

I didn't see any indication of how many hit the grizz.  I might have thought from the initial report htat he went 9 hits on 9 shots.  If that were the case, he'd be absolutely phenominal in his shooting.

I once took off the front of a buck's atria with a 180-grain Black Talon (what it was called then) in .30-06.  Damn deer ran into an alder thicket 50 yards away, threaded itself about 10 yards in, and died.  My first deer.  Many years ago.

Penetration is the key. You may not hit the heart. The matted fur can stop many handgun rounds and some rifle rounds. Bullet type also comes into play. Solids. Nothing that will expand.
