...bears

No time for a proper C&P and the thread is too damn long anyway.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x8463695

SYNOPSIS: Couple hiking in Denali encounters charging grizzly. Dude is packing a .45 and dumps 9 rounds into the bear making it run off.

So far DU is running 60-40 in favor of dude being eaten by the bear.
According to the Bible, "know" means "yes."

I read some of that earlier.  Those in favor of what the guy did are just gun-loving fetishists.

55. There is no justification for this.

Sport hunting is prohibited within Denali National Park, including designated wilderness lands and the 1980 park additions.

It's legal to carry firearms in that area of the park but illegal to discharge them.

If you can't take the risk of animal encounters without killing the animals you encounter, stay the **** out of the park.

57. Um, self defense justifies this.

And since the guy was hiking, not sport hunting, sport hunting does not enter into this.

84. No. As I said, if you can't take the risk of an animal encounter

without killing the animal you encounter, then stay the **** out of the park. It is a nature preserve. You want to commune with nature, that is just fine, but you accept the risk of doing so.

88. Bears are like people. Most are decent but some just have an attitude.
"Unless cubs are involved, you don't generally need a gun to get rid of a bear. Just an ability to make lots of loud noises."

Most of the time this is true, but not all the time. There have been plenty of people who have been attacked by bears, both black and brown and polar that have not had cubs or food involved.

4. Here's what it says on the Park's website

~snip~

In any event, the gun was not to be discharged in this area, and there's some question as to whether the bear was actually charging or just bluffing, as they are wont to do.

I swear to God that bear had a Full House!

Grizzly Bears are crazy ass creatures. When they are in attack mode, they will continue to fight until they almost completely bleed out. then they will stop, turn, walk away and drop dead a few minutes later.

Scrambling its brain is the only way to stop it sooner.

Just read some of the OP from this, but I don't understand why it would be legal to carry a firearm in the area but illegal to shoot it. WTF?

Anyway,back to reading it.

Ok, yeah a good bit of responses to that one. My opinion is if the bear was charging them, of course he had to right to shoot. It would almost be human instinct to do so. If the bear was just around them, then no he didn't have the right to shoot. We do have to share nature with the animals. Even the big ones. But basically it is their word against a dead bear's who couldn't talk anyway. I am happy they came out alive. Being in any area with Grizzlies is going to be dangerous to a certain extent. Doesn't mean we should shoot them if they just show up. If there was a legitimate threat, then of course save your life by whatever means necessary.

I went to Alaska one time.  Saw some big-ass bears that would make Fat Albert look like Richard Simmons.  Anyone who doesn't bring a gun with them is a fool.

If I were still posting there, I would've posted the same thing. The crazies there are very loud and noticeable. The more sane people just roll their eyes and move on. There are sane people there. They may not be as vocal, but they are there. There are also some LOONY people there. And by loony, I mean batshit insane. And if a really popular or "rich" DUer doesn't like you, then yes, your time there is probably limited. BTW, I think the admins there fall into the batshit insane category.

Dummies are everywhere, and you'll find them posting outside the island all too often. A while back, there was a woman and her child attacked while walking a short way from home, by a mountain lion I believe. The mom fought off the cat and saved her child. Comments on the news site had a number of dummies who were berating the mom for not letting the cat take her child, as that was interfering with nature and being "mean" to the poor kitty. Some were afraid the cat would suffer and be too afraid to feed itself after the incident. Like these dummies, they were labeling the animal as the victim.

I live in Grizzly country and I carry that exact same piece except I load 700 grain solids.  They define the word thump.

I have been charged by a Grizzly and it is not for the faint of heart.  They come at you fast.  A 338 Win Mag to the noggin ended the issue.
