9 rounds into a bear? Even a .45? Sounds like he ****ing missed with every one of them.
Not at all. A .45 is not a particularly deep penetrator, and only a heart, brain, or spine shot will drop most large critters in their tracks, or almost in their tracks. Of the three, the heart is the most likely since the bullets are unlikely to reach the spine (Except perhaps one going right through the bear's open mouth into the back of the throat). I've shot a deer straight through the heart, one round of 7.62x39 soft-point, and then seen it run 75 meters before collapsing.
Anything but one of those instant kills, even 9 .45s, and you may have mortally wounded the bear, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's going to quit, either.
