Get vaccinated or get fired.
« on: September 28, 2009, 06:03:13 PM »

Despite a planned rally in Albany Tuesday to protest a state regulation requiring health care workers be vaccinated against influenza — both seasonal and swine flu — New York’s top public health official predicts dissenters will ultimately extinguish their anger and roll up their sleeves.

The regulation, which was approved in August, comes with a stinging addendum: Get vaccinated or get fired.

But some nurses and many other health care providers say the regulation violates their personal freedom and leaves them vulnerable to vaccine injury. And they cite deaths associated with the last federal government swine-flu vaccination program in 1976.

Refusing to be immunized against H1N1 because of the vaccine debacle in 1976 “is like saying a plane crashed 33 years ago so I’ll never fly again,” said Dr. Richard Daines, New York State health commissioner.

New York is the only state in the nation to require that health care workers be vaccinated, though other states are considering such measures. Health workers, including doctors, must be immunized by Nov. 30. Opponents say it’s simply unnecessary.(more at link)

They might as well have to fire some people then because I still thought it was a free country and people were free to choose the sh*t that goes into their bodies or am I wrong

If they made it mandatory where I work, I'd get the shot and then call in sick for 3-4 days. They do offer free flu shots for employees and shots for family members for $10 a pop.

I left the military a long time ago .... now I use medications when I feel like I need them ... not when someone else says I need them.  They would have to fire me then, most probably, talk to my attorney.

It's not required in my office...yet.  Those of us who travel spend a lot of time in a LOT of hospitals.  If any one of us opts out of the shots and then gets sick, he/she will get a lot of  :whatever: upon returning.  Getting the shot is just not that big of a deal.  They don't make me go to the dentist twice a year either, but if I don't, they don't wanna hear complaints if my teeth rot out either.

Get vaccinated or get fired.

Get bent.

I've already dealt with one improperly prepared vaccination.  Had a 2-year old boy in PICU for a month, on a respirator for 3 weeks, and on a friggin' heart/lung machine for a week because somebody couldn't sufficiently hobble the Pertussis bacteria to keep it from trying to kill the child it was intended to immunize.

I won't go through that again.

Almost without exception, every health-care worker in NYS that I've talked to about this (quite a lot, actually, seeing that I live here) is very uncertain about this.  Maybe I'll amble up to the rally this noontime.  I work about a quarter-mile from where it's going to be held, and my wife works right there (along with my mother-in-law).

TN does not require the shots, but does strongly recommend them for healthcare workers.  Most of the hospitals have decided to require employees to get the shots.  Those who decline are required to wear masks when on hospital property.  Those who refuse either, talk a walk.

Unless I'm forced to do so, I won't be getting ANY vaccinations. When the research scientists that developed the H1N1 vaccine won't take it themselves, that should say something. Many of these vaccines seem to cause more problems than they're worth.

There's something unsettling when a health care worker won't take this shot. Maybe there's something they know that we don't. Like it's not really necessary and the CDC is spreading hysteria?

Of course the CDC is blowing H1N1 all out of proportion.

I actually had the swine flu just a couple weeks ago, and it was miserable, but I never felt like my life was at risk.  I honestly don't think that most healthy people really have to be concerned, especially considering the fact that most people have easy access to medical care when necessary.  Mine did turn into pneumonia, which could have been considerably more dangerous, but that was treatable with antibiotics.

This flu does seem to spread easier than others I've been around though.  I was sick in bed within 36 hours of being exposed, and everybody in my house got sick.

I definitely think it has been blown all out of proportion.  People die from the flu every year, it can be a very dangerous disease.  I don't think there has been any significant evidence that the H1N1 is any more deadly.

A little research will show that the vaccination is far worse than the illness

Really thankful to hear that you've recovered from it so strongly  :cheersmate:

I thought the more serious concern over the H1N1 strain was that unlike typical flu strains which primarily only seriously affected the elderly and small children, it happened to most seriously affect healthy adults.  Particularly young ones at that.  Shrugs, I could very well be mistaken, I haven't been concerned enough to pay too much attention to it all.

Regardless, really thankful you're alright now!

Healthcare workers typically have built up a better immunity than say people who are never around sick people.  I have been exposed to just about everything, but have never contacted anything.  After 20 years of working in city hospitals, I think I can come face to face with the Ebola virus and still walk away clean.

I get the Flu vaccination every year though...not sure why...but I get it.  I do not think I'm going to get the H1N1 though because I'm wary of new vaccinations.

It did hit my brother and I (he's 20, I'm 24) more strongly than our parents  so that may very well be true, but even with that, none of us were deathly ill.  I'm definitely not downplaying the potential seriousness of the disease, but from what I've seen in the news, most people who have died put off getting medical care or had other health issues.  I would definitely suggest that anybody who suspects that they would be at high risk of complications, or who doesn't think they would be able to get fast medical care if necessary get the vaccine, because it does hit fast.  I just don't completely trust vaccines that haven't had the time to undergo significant medical trials, and I dislike the idea of anybody getting so involved in personal medical decisions when there is not an imminent health risk.

on line info indicates that this flu is "mild" an not life threatening to anyone is reasonably good health. So...why take an experimantal vaccination?  It COULD be inneffectual or cause an adverse reaction as easily as protect!

Forcing medication isn't anything new. If you are a patient in a hospital and you refuse medication, they can restrain you and force you to take it.
Nurses force medication on people all the time, now they are complaining when it happens to them?

I know someone who was in a psychiatric hospital. He's bi-polar, they forced him to take the most awful medication (risperdal) which gave him many side effects and generally made him feel like sh*t. When he got out of the hospital he stopped taking the awful medication, saw a private psychiatrist and is now taking Seroquel--and he has no side effects.

In a psychiatric hospital, if you refuse taking medication, they will strap you down and force it down your throat.
Same in a regular hospital too, most of the time.

Last time I was in a hospital, I refused to take a shot. The nurses ganged up on me and told me that if I didn't take it they would restrain me.
You lose your freedom when you enter a hospital because of the nurses. So I don't feel sorry for these nurses at all.

in a regular hospital, if you tell the nurses to STOP THEY WILL, BUT YOU MUST INSIST and have reliable visitors you can complain to. Your visitor can remind the hospital Administrator that they can say "Malpractice".

I had to DEMAND that they STOP adding pain killers to my "drip". Withdrawl (cold turkey) was a bitch, and I was in pain thereafter
(and still am 4 years later) but the healing process was increased and I was able to leave the hospital ALIVE.
