Title: Hey Sparky
Post by: formerlurker on January 17, 2011, 07:08:30 PM
Repeat after me -- I love New England.   The streets in my neighborhood have so much snow on them already, that the roads are really just one way.  You can barely get two cars passing each other on them.   After this we will have to break out the cross country skis to go anywhere.

6-10 inches predicted for my area.  Fortunately the roads are pretty well cleared from the last storm, as is my driveway.

Unfortunately, I'll have to dig another path for the oil company this weekend when they deliver my refill.

On a happier note, it's currently -4 degrees with a -15 windchill, according to the local weather monitoring stations and my handy-dandy home weather station.

Meh--screw it.  I've already gassed up the snowblower for tomorrow.

It's the freezing rain accumulation that is the killer.    Snow all day, then freezing rain means no power.

You must be getting the same storm we are on Friday. When the weather guy says it's "rain all day on Thursday, later turning to ice, then turning to snow with at least 2" of snow accumulation but we're not sure of how much more".....it brings flashbacks of '93 and 24" of snow.  :(

Normally, the only time the weather gets to me, is when it's the unending high heat and humidity in the summer, but these last few weeks are making me really depressed with the almost constant gray sky. At least during December when it was like this, I was too busy to notice...

You have my sympathies being housebound with the munchkins...I would be so overdosed on chocolate by this point, my eyes would have turned brown!

We've had it fairly light in the Ozarks this year, really no major accumulation in my part of it yet.  Looks like we'll get at least a couple of inches Wednesday night/Thursday, but the way things are going it'll probably sweep on through quickly and head for the Ohio valley and possibly New England like all the previous ones seem to have done.

Problem up here is, it's not warming up at all, and it's just piling up.  And FL is right.  The snow is just the start.  Add on a 1/2 inch of ice and you're gonna have some SERIOUS problems.

Oh, and they revised the forecast for this weekend.  -10 on Saturday night, -6 on Sunday night.  Highs MIGHT get above 10.

You sure?  You've SEEN my driveway.  Also, I have an "ice bump" in the front where the plows built up the slush and I didn't get to it in time.  It's about 6 inches high right now.

Actually, yesterday, as I was plowing out the latest 8-inches addition of "global warming" to my driveway and porches (BTW--the snow piles on the back porch are now most of the way up to the upper railing, and nearly chest-deep at the bottom of the steps so Laddie can get out to pee) I ran the snowblower across the road to clear out in front of the mailbox.  Up to the bottom of the box, about 4-5 feet back, and a 20-foot wide swath, just so the mail truck can get in and deliver my mail.  Yes, kids, it's true--if you don't clear it out, they won't deliver your mail.

And this morning I'm going to dump a 50-lb bag of driveway melt and sand on the driveway in a futile attempt at getting some of the packed stuff to melt.

DOVER — The outlook for the rest of the winter isn't looking good for those already tired of the cold and snow.

AccuWeather.com Chief Long Range Forecaster Joe Bastardi predicts cold weather will continue to dominate at least through mid-February across much of the eastern two-thirds of the country. He also said "wintry events" could last into April, longer than last year's season.

Based on what is predicted for the rest of the season, Bastardi also says that this winter could end up being the coldest for the nation as a whole since the 1980s.

Bastardi also predicts more persistent colder-than-normal temperatures and a lack of brief warm spells typical to most winters. Temperatures since Dec. 1 have averaged below normal from Boston to Miami and as far west as Minneapolis.

The biggest snowstorms in February will target areas mainly north of a line running from the Mason-Dixon Line to the Ohio River and I-40 across the Plains, according to Bastardi.

It will not be until late February into March that opportunities arise for the colder-than-normal weather pattern to break. However, Bastardi warns that there could be a return of cold and storms across the northern part of the nation, including the Great Lakes and Northeast, from mid- or late March into April.

(SNIP)

More immediately, the National Weather Service is predicting temperatures well below zero this weekend and the N.H. Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management urges New Hampshire residents and visitors to take precautions to protect themselves and their property against the cold.

Daytime high temperatures are expected to be in single digits, with overnight lows between 10 and 30 degrees below zero.

"Temperatures this cold put people at increased risk of frostbite if they don't dress properly and take other precautions," said Christopher M. Pope, Director of Homeland Security and Emergency Management in a press release. "People should dress in layers, cover up as much as possible and limit their time outdoors."

Pope noted that frostbite is a particular threat to people participating in outdoor recreation because they are exerting themselves and may not notice the cold.

Sosnowski said AccuWeather is currently tracking a storm heading up the coast that could bring up to another foot of snow to the region, depending on the path it takes.

Which means we will be blowing through a tank of oil every month, and the last day of school will get bumped out until the end of June with possible school vacations being canceled.

Wait..... school vacations being canceled?  Kids in school instead of home.  Hmmmmm, that's not so bad.   :-)

Dunno about that. I lived in NE from 1975 to 1979 and I thought the worst part of living there was dealing with the taxes, the libs, and the traffic in Boston. Coming in at a distant 4th might be the winters.

Not just one storm this week -- two storms, piggybacking each other.   If you live in NE and have snow on your roof then you need to get it off before Tuesday.

Our first wave along this battle zone arrive Tuesday during the mid-late morning. Temp profiles look cold enough to support snow for most of the day. This will be a problem for many area schools. Do they cancel school for two days in a row? Poor parents. What to do? The snow will fill in fast Tuesday…become heavier by midday, so by the afternoon commute home..there will be several inches of snow on the ground. Do you send the buses and kids out in it? Why risk it?  This will be a game time call obviously. Tuesday’s morning commute will be dry, but evening commute will be a mess with snow covered road and the potential for 3-5″ of snow on the ground by 7 PM. This initial wave will pull away Tuesday night and may even mix with sleet and light rain as the precipitation begins to lighten and taper off.

Here lies the problem…The main event has not even started yet. Round #2 fills back in by dawn on Wednesday. More commuting nightmares for those who must get to work.  By this time, our storm will have tracked from Texas to the Ohio valley as an intensifying low. Heavy snows will be found on the northern side of the low…from Missouri, to Iowa, to Illinois, to Michigan. As warm air becomes entrained into the low in the midlevels between 850-800 mb, that pink transition line between snow and rain will mean business! A significant sleet and freezing rain storm is likely just south of the areas which will be getting the heaviest snow. Southern, Missouri, S. Illinois, S. Indiana, Ohio and PA all seem like pretty good bets to have to deal with this icy mix.

I know what you are thinking…who cares! What about us? New England is going to be a really close call. Just a few miles in the track will have extreme differences in Ptype, amounts, and impact. The Low is going to be LOADED with moisture from the Gulf. It is going to be a flat out nasty day. I am watching the influx of warmth some of our models are showing in the mid levels with warm air advection around the low.  Most have the 0 line at 850 going to the Mass Pike and stalling and then collapsing to the coast later. The GFS and JMA have been warmer, but I suspect will start to trend colder and come closer in line with the Euro and the GEM.

By Dawn on Wednesday, I am expecting snow to be falling along and north of the Pike, with freezing rain and sleet line moving through CT, RI and southeast MA. It will likely be raining on the Cape & islands by then. How far north this mix line goes is the real question, and I don’t think anyone really knows at this point. I think the best chance sleet and freezing rain will be south and along the Pike with the best chance of accumulating snow along and north of the Pike. Pretty straight forward, but again any change in warmth or track will have huge impacts to the forecast.

Well, aren't you just a ray of ****ing sunshine in my life?

And working 12's with an hour commute each way, exactly WHEN am I supposed to get all this global warming off my roof?

**** it.  If I still have a roof on Friday, I'll take care of it then.  (BTW--only have about 8-10 inches on it right now.)

Not to worry y'all! I'm gettin' the next storm y'all can expect in about 10 days! 15 to 25 MPH north wind, with gusts above 30! Wind chills way below zero. We're expectin' about 5º below tonight. Should send the wind chill down to about 60º below! Then around Thursday, it will get back up into "banana belt" weather again around 25º!

Better go check my tank heaters! Livestock drinks twice as much water when it gets cold like this than they do when it's above 20º. Never have quite figured that one out!

Dryer air--they can't hydrate fast enough.  Saw it when the guys made ice runs.  They said when they surfaced at the pole they were going through 2-3 gallons a day per person.

Yeah that's what happens with fools on the road! Even up here, the morons wait 'til the last minute to put on snow tires! The first storm we have, wreck-a-looza! Especially with the stooooopid Kalifornicators we import every year!

After the first one, everyone seems to wise up, except for, you guessed it, the Kalifornicators! Seems like they're so dense it takes a coupla dents in their cars, though we'd like to give 'em a couple in the cranium! DUmb****s

Sounds like the idiots in pickups and 4WDs who think they have special license to still follow everyone at 2 inches off their rear bumper and go normal highway speeds when there's a foot of snow and ice on the roads.

I've watched a few of those folks pass me, then literally a mile down the road, WATCH them eat it and take the ditch (if they're lucky) or the median rail (if they're not.)

Most of the houses in NE do have a pitched roofs, however once that snow becomes heavy wet snow with a 1/4 inch of ice coating, then it gets dangerous.

With at least four collapses this week in the region, including at the Casey and Hayes warehouse in West Bridgewater and at an unoccupied building in the Avon Industrial Park, authorities are calling attention to the threat of accumulated snow on rooftops caused by higher than average snowfall in recent weeks.

“I know a lot of commercial establishments are making efforts now to alleviate weight,’’ said Peter Judge, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency. “Most houses here have a good pitch to them, but homeowners need to pay attention to porches and garages as well.’’

I'm watching Weather Channel right now.  1+ inch of ICE in a band stretching from SW of St. Louis to NE to Indy.

Oh, that so SUCKS.  That is serious weather there.  I'd rather deal with 2 feet of snow than an inch of ice.

And Thor, I was used to light/dry snow when I lived in Idaho, Wyoming, and even Colorado.  But lake-effect snow (and I don't mean MN lakes, I mean BIG bodies of water not frozen over) is ****ing HEAVY.  Like trying to shovel wet concrete.  There really IS a difference.

It's at the point where you have to rake regularly, or have heater strips on the roof, or as some enterprising folks have done, throw a few old socks with rock salt or driveway melt on the lower parts of the roof.  Snow here will kill a roof in nothing flat.  I'm already noticing the weight as it's harder to open and close my closet door than it normally is in summer.

I resemble that remark!

Been more than one winter I earned a livin' shovelin' 3+ feet off roofs out on the lake for the "rich" bastards! Some of 'em are built right on a cliff and it's better than 60 feet to the rocks below!

I saw a very strange site a few years ago when the snow got heavy on our roofs.

This is in NH not Maine mind you.

The Police officer that lived behind me had a roof where the pitch was less then most of the his neighbors and he had much more snow and ice on his roof them the rest of us.  This was a sunday morning early and most the neighborhood were home when we began to hear yelling from his direction.   Curious as to why the Cop and family were yelling most of us went out to see a group of men hoisting a small snow blower up to his roof.  They proceded to clean off the snow and send a few shingles flying in all directions.  :stoner:  Had to be drugs even a drunk knows enough to do that.

On top of the 4+ feet you already have -- snow mounds up to 7-8 ft high.   There is no where to put this stuff.   It sucks.

The ice scares me too.   Still dealing with post traumatic stress from the last ice storm a few years ago.   Not looking forward to this at all.

ARCTIC AIR & WINTRY WEATHER TONIGHT

Today...Arctic air will begin to filter into Texoma in the afternoon today.  Highs in the lows 50s, cloudy skies, and calm Northerly winds.

Looking Ahead...A strong winter storm expected to move into Texoma overnight tonight into Tuesday morning.  Beginning as a cold rain and transitioning to freezing rain, sleet, and eventually all snow by mid morning Tuesday. A glazing of ice and high winds will create hazardous road conditions and possible power outages. Central and North Central OK can expect upwards of 8" of snow accumulation with lesser amounts to the south. Coupled with the winter weather, sub-zero wind chills in the forecast for the next few days.

The rain that was supposed to start yesterday, just started with sprinkie-dinks a little bit ago. Temps have stayed up, (57 now) the high winds are coming in (high a relative term...25mph - not much by midwest standards, but with the higher altitudes and all the trees, it's high wind warnings here), and 1" of rain expected tonight with storms.

Snow on Friday has switched to rain, still rain/snow for Tuesday.

In other words....who the hell knows what we are going to get.

All I can say is I think Al Gore and all these climate freaks....have really pissed off Mother Nature!!! NO ONE tells HER what the weather is going to be!!!!!!

I was here then.  Don't recall it, but it could be.  I remember an ice storm that came through and hosed stuff up, but that happens regularly.

So I guess we ARE experiencing global warming!

I was rearanging photos of family taken way back and notice that some from the 30--40's taken in the winter time show snow up to the eves of 2 story homes.

I found one picture of a snow device used in the 1910 era that looks like a steam roller pulled by horses or Mules that just flattened down the snow and compressed it enough so horse drawn wagons could get to town.

Cycles of weather patterns, some photos showed winter scenes with hardly any snow on the ground, in the 1920's and others in the 40-50's snow up to a tall Indians ass.----Local saying back then and written on the back of one photo--------

Can anyone explain what is happening in Australia to me.     We know about the Indonesian ring of fire, expect the worse.   Australia is to my mind the worse hit by any natural disasters and we ignore it to send money to some place that takes the money and never benefits it's citizens.

All we need is one or two humongous solar flares to take out world wide communication for a few weeks---that will be the icing on the cake.

Another storm coming this weekend.  Thought I would throw it out there for giggles, because this is just silly now.

Sparky prefers the powerpoint versions.......

As opposed to the airedale version of pointing and having your slack jawed look as the entire roof comes down around your face.

You forgot the incessant drooling that characterizes airedales.

Pretty much a given.  They're brownshoes because they forget to move their asses over the bowl or drop trou before they take a dump, too.
