I can name several classics, although I am trying to change that.
Gone with the Wind
To Kill a Mockingbird (dying to see this one)
-
Avatar (Dances with Smurfs)

Avatar (Dances with Smurfs)
I actually saw that one. I didn't think I'd like it, but I did. It wasn't as spectacular as everyone said, but it was visually beautiful. My 2 year old watched the entire movie.
I heard there will be a 2nd and 3rd.
-
Wizard of Oz.
-
Star Wars to name one but about 90% of all popular movies ever made.

I've never seen either of those. I haven't seen Citizen Kane either.

Me either.
My husband and I have made it our mission to watch many old classics. We so far have only seen Casablanca and Vertigo. Both left me just blah. I think it is a time thing. Had I seen them years ago, maybe I could appreciate them. Same for Easy Rider. I think I either needed to be stoned or living in that era.
-
Wizard of Oz.
Now that is one that I thought EVERYONE had seen.

Casablanca

Wizard of Oz.
Oh, man. See it. Preferably in the company of children who have seen it once already.

Star Wars to name one but about 90% of all popular movies ever made.
I liked the first 3 Star Wars (or the last ones) that were out when I was little. Now, with the new ones, I just can't get into them. I watched the first of the prequal when it came out, and I was underwhelmed.

There are several 'classic' movies I've tried and just couldn't force myself to sit through. I can't think of any I haven't actually seen.

The thing with a lot of classics, at least IMO, is that they represent a certain time. Casablanca I heard was phenomenal. Well my hubby and I watched, and I did realize how many sayings come from that movie, but I thought "this is what the big fuss is over". But, that's how it goes. Black and white movies bore me to death. Not that I enjoy modern fast-paced movies with scenes that cut in and out so fast you can't see anything, but b&w is just dull, dull, dull.

Twister
Titanic
The Dicaprio version of Romeo and Juliet
Any of the Bourne movies

Casablanca
Same here. I'm not that interested in Avatar, but I've always wanted to see all of Casablanca. Never sat through all of it. LOVE old black and white movies!!!!! (One of my favs was Grapes of Wrath)

Titanic
The Dicaprio version of Romeo and Juliet

I've seen all of those, and the only ones I recommend are the Bourne movies. They're quite good. I don't think I want to see the new one coming out that doesn't have Matt Damon in it though.

Passion of the Christ. :(
My husband and I went to the movies to see that one. I felt bad for buying popcorn and coke. Thankfully, the waiting time before the movie was long enough for us to eat it because there is no chomping away during that movie. I cried like a baby in that movie. I never cry. Not even hardly in real life much less for a movie. Definitely worth seeing. But it is powerful and emotionally draining.
And I still feel guilty for thinking Jesus was hot. I mean seriously, Jim Cavezal (sp???) is hot, and I felt bad about it, but I didn't think it a lot through the movie, there were some moments though... He did an excellent job.
-
another good thread would be, "Name a movie that you like, but no one else does". :-)
that would be more interesting. :whistling:

Never saw those THANKFULLY!!
Have you ever seen Glengarry Glen Ross????? HORRIBLE! It as so many greats in it, I bought it without hearing a word about it. Al Pacino, Ed Harris, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin, Kevin Spacey (MY FAVE), Alan Arkin..... TERRIBLE!! But everyone I talk to that has seen it has loved it. It must be me.

Are you a semi-fan of Terrantino? It is one of his better ones. Not better than Pulp Fiction to me, but it is good.

it isn't that they were bad, and I couldn't watch them. it's that they hooked me, and I couldn't stop watching them. and afterwards, they bothered me a good bit. those two movies are seriously forked up.

Casablanca
Casablanca is over rated, IMO. I like the one where he owns a boat and smuggles some diplomat the Nazis are searching for into some country.
-
I can't stand Tarrantino. He's such a self-absorbed jackass. Awful dialogue... terrible.
-
Aviator
It was good. It wasn't excellent, but it is worth seeing. I am not a fan of DiCaprio, but he is talented, and I enjoyed seeing the genius of Howard Hughes (even though he was crazy).

cape fear is Terrantino's revenge for not getting the oscar a few years before. it takes every cheap shot at the audience possible. things explode. doors slam. close ups happen as those big noises happen. tand then, this clearly bad guy gets too close to this clearly innocent girl.
the guy is a sadist. you don't have to look any further than pulp fiction to realize that.
-
I read an 'unofficial' biography of Hughes right before that movie came out in the theaters. Just seeing the commercials for it was a huge disappointment.

They were excellent, it was the story. And I have a friend who is an actor. He isn't known by anyone except me and his mom :-), but he says its an actors movie/play. Whatever. I didn't get it. I still love the actors in it though. Most of them.

He's definitely not right in the head. OR if he is then I am not. I haven't seen any of the Kill Bill movies. But I enjoyed Reservoir Dogs. I like Buscemi a lot, and I liked him in that movie. Harvey Keitel and Buscemi play crazy people pretty well.

I think he is talented, but there is something about him that pisses me off. Not sure what it is. I don't want to see his movies, but when I do, I mostly enjoy them.

Buscemi was okay in the Big Lebowski. Fargo? Not so much.

That is definitely one of those overrated films that I didn't get. I watched it, and I honestly don't remember one thing about it. I was stone cold sober, so I didn't forget because of that. It was just um-memorable for me. I forgot he was even in it.
Fargo that is.

Which one? Fargo? If you didn't get the Big Lebowski, you should be forced to spend an intimate weekend with Michael Moore.

haha! I just clarified my post, and then saw this one after. Fargo. I didn't get it.

It was definitely one of those movies that conveyed a 'feeling' more than an actual storyline. I thought Napoleon Dynamite was the same way. Aside from the final part of the movie culminating in the talent show, there wasn't much else to it.

I couldn't even tell you the story line of Fargo. I remember it being in a cold place (North Dakota maybe) and Frances McDormand. Maybe some murdering. That is it.
-
What's eating Gilbert Grape?

That was a pretty good movie. Probably one where DiCaprio lived up to his true potential as a retard. Everything else was downhill from there.

Fargo didn't do it for me either. I've only seen The Big L. once and thought it was good but I don't get the cult around that movie. I think Raising Arizona is still one of the best Cohen Bros. movies.

Isn't Cape Fear Scorsese? Regardless, I like the original better.
As for DiCaprio, I thought Shutter Island was the sequel to Titanic, like Titanic meets Jaccobs Ladder.
I wish I could say I had never seen Titanic but I finally saw it in the last year when TCM showed it.

Brokeback Mtn.
If it makes a girl, or a liberal male cry, I don't watch it.

I'll pass on the Saw movies. Why anyone would pay money to see people mentally & physically tortured is beyond me. There's enough miseryin the real world. In fact, I'll go so far as to say that people who watch these types of movies have a screw loose.

Conservative women rock. I know. I'm married to one.

Ditto. Our society has gone haywire. Violence, immorality and perversion have become the norm. Unless we start back on the path that the Founding Fathers set before us this Republic is doomed to extinction.

I cry like a baby at Braveheart. I start crying **Spoiler Alert highlight following text to read** when his wife dies and I don't stop until the end. I've been known to start when the kings men take the bride away the wedding as well.
I also cry at pretty much any movie with a serious war scene. Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, etc.

I saw the first Saw because I love scary movies. Kinda creeped me out, but after watching the second, I decided not to see any more of them.
Hostel was terrible. It was pure torture. Literally. Now maybe the Saw movies went as far as that one did after the second one, but the premise for Hostel was people who get off on watching others be tortured. I guess Saw was the same, but it was just this one dude who was pyscho. In Hostel, people paid to watch these innocent Hotel stayers be tortured. I couldn't hardly finish it, and most of it was with closed eyes. But, it isn't real, and I don't think those that enjoy those movies actually like people to be tortured. I don't know why they like them. Maybe the fear it gives them. That is kinda why I watch scary movies. I like to be scared (in that way). Still, as I said much earlier in this thread, torture movies aren't my thing.
-
Pretty much anything made after 1997. I knew movies were recycled crap when I saw an ORIGINAL movie with a great plot (LA Confidential) lose the Best Picture Oscar to an overhyped, overdone, melodramatic CGI-laden piece of celluloidal horseshit.

Have not seen a lot of the recent "popular" movies - Avatar, Harry Potter, Twilight, and I don't watch movies like Saw or any of those....
When I was a kid, The Wizard of Oz was on every Thanksgiving evening.
Gone With the Wind was wonderful.
I took History of Film in college as an elective - one night a week for 2.5 hours. We watched Citizen Kane for 3 WEEKS.... :banghead:
Love old classic WWII movies.

I remember watching to Wizard of Oz every year. I would take a bath, get my PJ's on and my mom would let us sit in front of the TV and eat dinner. Good memories.
I watched "What Ever Happened To Baby Jane" for the first time the other day. The acting was terrible but I couldn't stop watching it.

You're not missing anything except the music.
What's the deal with the paint cans?
( looking around, slightly confused )
Are you talking to me chris? If so, what paint cans are you referring to?

I was joking. The beginning of Satuday Night Fever shows John Travolta walking around with a can of paint.

See! I had no clue what you were talking about because I've never seen the movie!
A weapon perhaps. Just in case someone tries to steal his shiny slick shoes. :-)

The Carter administration... such a sad time for America, where John Travolta is condemned to carry paint cans and dance for his supper. :-)

Shawshank Redemption

Fiddler on the Roof & Phantom of the Opera...never had any desire to see either of those movies.

Amadeus wasn't a bad film, except that it left one to believe that Salieri actually finished Mozart's Requiem. And the actor that portrayed Mozart had an irritating giggle that made me want to throw my box of popcorn through the screen.
Oh, and Brokedick Mountain? NFW.
Capote is another film that I have no intention of seeing, even though the guy who portrayed him won Best Actor Oscar in a leading role. Smarmy, squirrelly, fudgepacker types aren't compelling or interesting in any way.
-
Shawshank Redemption
That is a MUST SEE!!! It is beyond excellent.

I've never seen Titanic. Fell alseep watching the DVD of the 1st Lord of the Rings movie. Was bored to sleep, never saw any of the subsequent ones. Never saw any Harry Potter or Twilight flick. As mentioned up-thread, I've never seen a Saw movie either. There's gotta be a few others that I missed that "everyone" has seen. Oh yeah, I've never seen all of "Pretty Woman".

It's worth watching at least once even if you're like me and can't stand Tim Robbins.

I have seen Old Yeller more times than I can count my sister had that and Parent Trap (the original one) and Pollyanna on ALL the time. I could say them word for word even now

I like him as an actor, but anything with Morgan Freeman is worth watching. I love Morgan Freeman.

None of the Harry Potter and Lord of the Ring movies. However, have seen all the Star Wars movies multiple times, go figure :mental:
-
Texas Chain Saw Massacre
I never wanted to see that.
-
Rocky Horror Picture Show
-
Never seen 'Citizen Kane' either. Or the Graduate, Ishtar, Victor/Victoria, Arthur, or Old Yeller.
The Graduate is a must see. Arthur is great for laughs the first time, if you can handle Liza Minelli in heavy doses. Dudley Moore & the butler make the movie, however.
-
I have never seen all of Citzen Kane but i have been told it is good
Citizen Kane is really one of the great movie epics. It's one of those movies that once it starts, I get sucked in noticing things I've never noticed before.

Bambi
I have seen Bambi meets Godzilla, though.

eh, you're not missing much. Harry Potter is tolerable... my favorite is Uncle Vernon :-)

I've never seen Casablanca or The Deer Hunter. Just never got around to them, I guess.
I get into these grooves where I'll watch a lot of movies from one particular genre, and then I get bored and switch to something completely different. Right now I've just emerged from a "cheesy horror movie" groove, and I haven't yet picked my next one. Maybe it's time to watch some of these classics I've never seen.
