Oh my.

This is the primitive who's been on the gravy train since 1992.

Nickled and dimed and quartered, oh my. . .

Landlords are sneaky. They advertise an apartment for $X per month, then tell you your heat and water are billed through their meters, so those utilities are added to the costs you pay them. Okay, that’s fairly standard. Then there’s the nifty add-on for the “hot” water; guess it beats heating the bath water on the stove. This is in addition to the electric bill that is in my name, and the quarters I have to put in their laundry machines.

My building was sold a few months ago. The monthly ‘rent statement’ now includes an amount to cover the costs of keeping the lights on in the hallways. So there’s that. And instead of having an on-site manager, if a problem arises you have to call long distance and leave a message, to which they may or may not respond.

These new remote managers were unhappy that my rent check wasn’t there until the third or fourth of the month. As with the previous owner I explained that my rent check is sent as soon as my Social Security check is deposited, which happens (usually) on the third day of the month. They suggested that I avoid being assessed late fees by using their online payment option. So, this month I opted to give that a try, thinking that I’d at least save the cost of a postage stamp.

Turns out their system was glitchy for two days and they didn’t get it cleared until well after 6pm today; but they called and let me know it was working, so I went online and succeeded in getting the rent paid. Finally. Unfortunately, at the very end of the transaction it advises that there is a $17 fee for utilizing the online payment. Gah.

And the rent is going up. A lot. Mine hasn’t been raised yet, they’ve been evicting people so they can go in and reno the places to rent out for a higher amount. I’ve been here several years, they know I’m not transient, so I’m guessing that I might be one of the last to find that note taped to the door.

The good news is that next month will see me once again supporting the postal service. Oh well.

1. Yeah, renting sucks.

I did it for several years, then bought a house after the crash which has a mortgage payment cheaper than just about any apartment in the area. Talk about a dramatic improvement in quality of life.

While I rented, the rent jumped every other year and the building just fell apart. The laundry got pricier and pricier with crappy maintenance and parking got worse and worse.

2. Sorry.

Bad news. I pay rent in 2 places, and have no such difficulties, fortunately.

Thanks to Democratic/liberal Republican housing and finance regulations, there are enough vacant houses for an old biddy and some of her old biddy friends to rent.

If you live in an expensive neighborhood, life is cheaper with a roommate.
If you want to worship an orange pile of garbage with a reckless disregard for everything, get on down to Arbys & try our loaded curly fries.

I'm not believing for a minute the $17 charge to use an online payment option.

Well, it sounded good and helped support her tale of the evil landlord.  She/it is also lying about the timing of her malingerer checks.

I'm not believing for a minute the $17 charge to use an online payment option.

There may be a nugget of truth in there, somewhere. While I was working in Wyoming, the apartment complex where I rented had a 30-35 dollar fee for using the web based pay site. Even at home, the utility charges for credit/debit card use (but transfers are free(?)). It's probably because of a casual account with Visa/MasterCard whereas when the account holder does less than the minimum, say $200,000.00 per month, they get smacked with a 2% fee from the bank. The utility, because the banks don't want to front money for the scofflaws.

Yet, then again, few section 8 apartments take personal checks or credit cards. So the primitive has to run down to the 7-11 every 1st of the month to get a money order. And a 40 of malt liquor.

Rented a very small house in Va, for $450.00 a month.   I should have known that the rent was too little and wonder why.

The breaker box  was way off bad, put in in perhaps 1950.  Plumbing was ok no problem but only enough hot water for a 6 minute  shower.

No way to put in a window air conditioner and the TV could not be used if the lights were on in the rest of the house.

In the front yard there was a huge tree, perhaps 50 years old.  A grand old tree that had spread out over the house and into the street.

The landlord was a grouchy old Lawyer that owned about 30 homes on the street and
knew ever member of the town inspectors or those on the zoning commission.

About 3 months after moving in and questioning him about the electrical system and him refusing to take my calls, KAMA got the old bastard.

Storm came up and somehow lightening went from the ground to the air and killed that big beautiful tree.  ---------Late at night asleep and the boom left not only a blue light in the house but  electricity left our hair standing on end.   Until that time I had no idea that that lightening could come up from the ground to met that in the air.

Next day the tree that showed no damage  began to loose its leaves, branches were beginning to break off and fall off.

I called the landlord to tell him about his tree and he became angry over why I was bothering him about this small thing.   Before I hang up on the SOB I mentioned that some branches  were over the street and for one to fall and harm some one he would have a law suit.

Have no idea what happened to the landlord, we gave up the security  deposit and ran for the hills.
