I don't know, but I heard it was automatic due to length of service.  However, I also heard today that it's being suspended for now.

Up to SPC, you can be promoted automatically.  SGT (E-5) and above has schooling requirements (NCOES) prior to promotion.  Up to E-4?  Fine..... whatever. After that, it's bullshit.

He accrued the required amount of time-in-grade while being "held", and received an automatic promotion in absentia.

I'm not familiar with any of the more (last 20 or so years) recent conflicts/captives, but it was not uncommon for captives in the Viet Nam conflict to be promoted while being held captive.  For example, McCain was advanced to Commander, and IIRC, Perot's running made, Admiral Stockdale was advanced to Captain while he was captive.

Same thing for MIA's My Crew Chief (E-4)and Platoon Leader (O-3) went missing in 1968.  They are listed in the VN Wall as SSG and LTC.  I don't know at what point they stop promoting them.

Its automatic promotion to SPC (E4) then promotion board to SGT(E5). He would ahve stayed in the running just like any other missing service person. His promotion to SSG(E6) is on hold pending investigation.

The initial 15-6 investigation could not convict him of desertion because with him gone they could not complete the case. Now that he is back I will wait for the new 15-6 with bated breath. Barry can't allow this to get away from him. I almost think Barry will give him a presidental pardon if it starts turning 'bad' for Barry's PR.

You know what?  I trust our soldiers immensely and really trust their opinion.  If I saw a majority of our soldiers saying that he needed to be left alone I would step back. They wouldn't denigerate their own brother if they had any doubt in his story. Right?
