Sorry again, I can't easily copy & paste using my phone.

Essentially, he goes through a litany of who would have been President had LBJ ran in 1968.   Every subsequent election would have been won by a Democrat.  Bobby Kennedy, Ted Kennedy, Jerry Brown, Jesse Jackson, Ann Richards, and all twice.

IF

IF LBJ ran in 1968 and didn't retire, he would have won in the dirtiest race of all time at that time, could have taken Bobby and jeittisoned HHH

Bobby open run in 72 and 76
Teddy in 80 and 84
Jerry Brown in 88 and 92
Jesse Jackson in 96 and 2000
Anne Richards in 2004 and 2008
Obama (who would have been Anne's VP in 2008)in 2012 and 2016
Deval Patrick in 2020 and 2024

IF only IFs could ocme true

3. LBJ couldn't win. He knew that.

Bobby wasn't an option...he was dead.

Our best chance for the future of the country was Bobby. When he was assasinated 50,000 americans died with him.

And that all laid the foundation for the rise of the beancounters, then Clinton, then Bush, ....

And here we are.

6. Bobby was NOT assured of getting the nomination...it is quite possible HHH would have anyhow

and in my scenario Bobby was still alive.

Remember, (or look it up if too young)...McCarthy fans were fuming mad that Bobby entered the race and stole Gene's thunder. Gene was sort of Howard Dean of that year.

Bobby only entered upon LBJ retiring, he kept indicating he would not run if LBJ did

McCarthy was not going to win

Bobby of course died, Ted sulked and 1969 event happened and all 3 Kennedy's were gone from the picture, with Teddy running in 1980 being the one and only time he should not have won

(or the least, Teddy should have wrangled the VP under Carter, but there was so much bitterness, look what all that inner party fighting in 1968 did-

it allowed so many Republican presidents, none of whom might have won had the chain of events not happened.

The country did not turn conservative, the democratic party was at war with itself (much like today's republicans).

it's just a damn shame Bush came into power.

Even Nixon was strong and smart enough not to name 41 VP, in 1968 and not to name him VP after Agnew resigned or allow Ford to name him VP after the deal was made.

Even Nixon knew how bad the Bush's were.

But none of it had to happen

which is why it is imperative not to allow the repubs especially Jeb to sneak back in.

4. I don't think LBJ would have won

He would still have the problem of Wallace splitting the vote in the South.

9. Do you remember how strong LBJ was. He would have neutralized Wallace, HHH couldn't do that.

and LBJ fought as dirty as Nixon. It would have been brutal almost a death match.

HHH unfortunately a great man, super to talk to by the way, but he carried all of LBJs baggage, and did not really have any of his own reasons for running, making him a candidate who had a very hard time of winning and he didn't.

8. couldn't have happened

1) LBJ and Bobby Kennedy hated each other.

2) Hunter Thompson's Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72 chapter "Can a Bull Elk in Rut pass through the Eye of a Camel" would have applied in spades. It could not have happened.

3) The Democratic Party was so deeply divided, mostly over Vietnam, but also the Dixiecrats were deeply disturbed over the civil rights legislation that Johnson had pushed through, and the conservatives within the party felt the hippies to be repugnant and vice versa.

It wasn't close to happening. It wasn't going to happen.

Talking that particular "what if" is silly.

10. JFK and LBJ did not like each other either. They did it to win. So would Bobby have...

though who knows, look how childish Teddy was on stage in 1980 avoiding Jimmy Carter

(and I myself love Teddy, but admit it was silly of Teddy, and might have helped cost Jimmy the election.

Which is why the entire democratic party will be for Hllary in 2016, because they know their history.

Everyone else is going for VP and the VP probably already has been picked.

Bobby put party first. At least I think he would have.

the cause would have made him do it.

11. Ha. Ha. Ha.

 :rotf: :rotf: :rotf: :rotf: :rotf:

Almost all that you mentioned were unelectable. The country, for better or worse, prefers to change the party of power on occasion, especially the President. And it often has little to do with the policies they might champion.

Interesting fantasy world, though. Thank goodness it never transpired.

No problem, sir; if I'm on line and someone needs this sort of help, I'm happy to do it, as a public service for the Good of Humanity.

Please, someone has got to c&p post #20.  Apparently, graham crackers's thread was alerted on.  The jury let it stand 7-0.  The results are there and hilarious.

No, I didn't alert nor serve on the jury.

Not to pick nits, but Ann Richards died in 2006.

Heyu (556 posts)

20. jury results.

AUTOMATED MESSAGE: Results of your Jury Service
On Mon May 26, 2014, 10:11 PM an alert was sent on the following post:

IF
http://www.discussionist.com/101533289

REASON FOR ALERT

This post is uncivil, off-topic, offensive, or otherwise inappropriate.

ALERTER'S COMMENTS

Hide this before the rest of the world sees it. They are going to think we are all a bunch lunatics. Does anyone know this person? Can we get an intervention? He is obviously in need of treatment for serious mental health issues. If you serve on this jury, post the results and tell this poster we are here for him. We will get him the help he so desperately needs. Don't laugh at him. He could turn dangerous.

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of Discussionist members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Mon May 26, 2014, 10:20 PM, and the Jury voted 0-7 to LEAVE IT.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: This is just G4A being his unusual self. He wasn't uncivil, no matter how ridiculous his speculation. Let it stand.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: It's his shtick. I enjoy a good word salad every now and then.
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: This is the dumbest alert I have ever seen. Yes Graham is an odd duck and frankly can be annoying, but this alert is the worst alert I have seen.- heyu
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Poster is a well known crazytype person/possible troll. It would have to be based in reality of some sort to be offensive.
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: While I completely agree with the alerted that this sort of stupidity shouldn't be tolerated, better to not hide the post and allow this to be handled publicly.
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Huh? Hide it WHY?
Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: I think alerter should look in the mirror.

It's good to have Graham Crackers back.  He's hilarious!

I beg to differ sir.  Democrat Underpants is probably the premiere political, nay moral, voice in the nation.  The alerter was only trying to protect it's precious reputation.
