how long does it take you to make a post?
« on: April 14, 2014, 08:12:29 AM »
You know, I'm really curious about something.

If one goes to "Users OnLine" at the bottom of the forum page--and yes, any registered member can do this--and clicks on that link, it brings up everybody who's here, and what they're doing.

There's some times when I'm on the verge of leaving, but then I notice someone's "posting on xxx thread," and since I like reading that member, I hang around a little bit longer before I leave, to see what's said.

I'm sure that when I show up myself as posting on a thread, less than a minute elapses before I hit the "post" button.

But some here are shown as "posting on xxx thread" for the longest time; it seems as if they're writing War and Peace or somesuch.....and then it turns out to be a seven-word, one-sentence, comment.

Is it one-finger typing, maybe?

Many times I start writing a post and get interrupted by a phone call or I need to deal with something that just came up, so I just leave it until I get back. Come to think of it, that happens a lot to me.

I don't have that 'users online' showing anywhere.  On the homepage there is a column on the left showing who is on line, but clicking on a name goes to a screen that simply says that user is on line.

As to the question.  If I'm doing something from DU, it takes a long time if bringing multiple posts over.  I have dial up, and sometimes I even press the wrong button and everything clears - but that's me and not the dial up issue.

Reading takes me a long time also, for the threads with multiple pages - same dial up, goes slow.  I only try face book about once a week because of that, and email about the same frequency.
This too shall pass.

It depends. Bringing a thread over from Skin's Island takes the longest, but quoting a news article takes a little time. Posting original thoughts, not so much.

Frank, maybe what you see is different because you are a mod. I can see who is online, but I can't tell what users are doing.  If I'm on a specific thread, it shows up top who is also looking at that thread, but doesn't say if they are posting.

I too have a lot of interruptions and it may take awhile to post something.  Sometimes I'll start replying to something, then think it's lame and leave the thread.  Also, I may have more than one thread open.  Don't know how/if that shows up.

Maybe this will help, Dori:

You see where it shows how many users, guests and whatnot are online at the time? That's a clickable link.  Click on it, and it'll take you to a page which lists all of those users and guests, and tells you what they're doing at any given point in time.

I must be really dense.  On the front page to the left, it shows who is on line.  The only clickable links are on each individual users name.  That takes you to their profile page.

I don't know how you got to the page/img you pasted.

Okay, I'm not criticizing--no way--anyone's posting and the ways they do it.  I was just curious.

This morning, I was about ready to leave, when I noticed Karin was shown as posting on a thread about goat cuisine.  I really had to get going, but on the other hand Karen's usually pretty witty, and I wanted to see what she was saying before I left.

The second-hand of the clock went round and round and round, always showing Karin was posting.  As it was Karin, and as it involved goat cuisine, I really wanted to see what she said before I left.

I was very late in leaving.  It was as if (I really don't know what she was doing) she started a sentence, then went to fix breakfast, finished the sentence, then went to fold the laundry, started a second sentence, then went out to mow the lawn, finished the second sentence, then changed the linen on the beds, started a third sentence, then went to wash the walls, &c., &c., &c.

The one who gives the longest, agonizingest "waits" is, of course, vesta dear.

Something like this always happens:

8:20 a.m. he: Hey, it's time, we better get going.
8:20 a.m. me: But wait a minute, vesta's posting and I want to see what she has to say, before I leave.
.
.
.
8:24 a.m. he: It's getting late; the customer [for a horse-trailer] won't be happy to wait.
8:24 a.m. me:  But vesta's posting, and it's always something good.
.
.
.
8:31 a.m. he: Hey--
8:31 a.m. me: I know, but I'm sure she's going to be hitting the "post" button any minute now.
.
.
.
8:42 a.m. he: Uh--
8:42 a.m. me: Don't worry; it'll be worth the wait, as vesta's pretty interesting.
.
.
.
9:03 a.m. he: She's as fast as a glacier; really, we have to get going.
9:03 a.m. me: But she's taking so long it has to be good.
.
.
.
9:14 a.m. he: She's not done posting yet?
9:14 a.m. me: It might be a pretty long piece, making it even more interesting.
.
.
.
9:28 a.m. he: Maybe she died at the computer.
9:28 a.m. me: No, she's just a little bit slow, that's all.
.
.
.
9:39 a.m. me: Damn.  Damn.  Damn.  vesta signed off without posting what she wrote.....

It's at the very bottom of the main forum page, ma'am.

You're aware that after you click on "users online" (the blue lettering; usually anything in blue print on conservativecave is a link to something) and get to that, if you click on "users" near the top of that page (in black print), it "organizes" the list, lurkers and then users.  If you click on it a second time, it shows users first, and then lurkers.

I'm usually checking on lurkers--I really don't care what users are doing--to see which primitives are reading the DUmpster.  Professional interest.

I didn't know our pause time was available.

The anatomy of a FD post:

1) Ah, something funny and I have a funny reply!  Hit Reply or Quote depending on the context...
2) Pause while I go the fridge to get a beer, then put it in a beer cozy, then open it
3) Start to actually type (yes, 2 finger typist but it has wrkeod for me as a developer for 30 ysrsa...) BKSPC BKSPC BKSPC
4) Sip beer
5) Wait, what the heck was that brilliant retpt?  Dang, I need a synonym for the word "synonym" because I hate redundancy which I hate.
6) Thank you Google!  A synonym for "synonym" is "simile."
7) Sip beer
8) Reread.  Oh crap, there is a grammatical error.  It sucks to be a grammar Nazi, since every post must be pefect!
9) OH NOEZ!!!!  "Another post has been posted since you began."  What if it renders my post meaningless?
10) Copy my post to notepad
11) Read the 1... no wait, 2... 3... dammit... posts
12) *whew* my post still makes sense and hasn't been obviated
13) sip beer
14) swig beer
15) Prayer to the Spaghetti Monster my post will not make a fool for eternity
16) Slam beer
17) Post and jump up and down while singing "Theme to Rocky" (words Dah dah DAAAAAAH Dah Da DAAAAAHHH...)

18) Crap!  "Warning - while you were typing 2 new replies have been posted. You may wish to review your post."  Meta-posts suck!!!

Found it, thanks.  I've been looking at the home page.

This brings up something else.

How many people go first to the home page, and then come to the forum page?

It's quicker to simply go immediately to the forum page, bypassing the home page.  In fact, that's how I have conservativecave on my "favorites," the forum page.  I've been on the home page maybe six or eight times the past few years.

And near the bottom of the forum page, there's always that handy-dandy "most recent posts" section, that lets one know what's just happened.

When I first come to the website, the home page displays, and right on top next to my avatar where it says "Hello Dori" there are two options;

Show unread posts since last visit. and
Show new replies to your posts.

I use the first one

I go to the main forum page, not the home page.  The first thing I do is check out unread posts.

If I'm busy and trying to make a post, it usually takes me a while.  It doesn't help that my laptop is cursed with IE8 that barely functions on a good day.

My bookmark is the "forum" also.  It confused me at first when I'd look at what people were viewing and it would say "Portal" for some of them.
