I Lost My Dad to Fox News

Old, white, wrinkled and angry, they are slipping from polite society in alarming numbers. We’re losing much of a generation. They often sport hats or other clothing, some marking their status as veterans, Tea Partyers or “patriots” of some kind or another. They have yellow flags, bumper stickers and an unquenchable rage. They used to be the brave men and women who took on America’s challenges, tackling the ’60s, the Cold War and the Reagan years — but now many are terrified by the idea of slightly more affordable healthcare and a very moderate Democrat in the White House.

We’re losing people like my father to the despair of Fox News, and it’s all by design.

My dad is 67 years old, a full year younger than the average Fox viewer, who is 68, according to an analysis in New York magazine by columnist Frank Rich. I’ve read accounts of people my age — 40 or so — losing parents to cancer or Alzheimer’s, but just as big a tragedy are the crops of grandmothers and grandfathers debilitated by Fox News-induced hysteria.

I enjoyed Fox News for many years, as a libertarian and frequent Republican voter. I used to share many, though not all, of my father’s values, but something happened over the past few years. As I drifted left, the white, Republican right veered into incalculable levels of conservative rage, arriving at their inevitable destination with the creation of the Tea Party movement.

My dad less so. It's hard to tell how much of it sinks in, because we're not ones to talk much about politics in our family. Two things I've noticed: The obvious scare tactics, and the content is really dumbed down. I think they aim at about an 8th grade level of education.

Retirees don't even seem to get that it was good common-sense progressive work policies and benefits (which X'er/Millennial workers won't get and the loonbars on Faux think no one but wealthy white men should have) that allowed them to retire in the first place.

They should be thanking the social contract and shutting off that evil ****ing channel.

6. we ran into this problem

my dads family lives in Pittsburgh, my dad trended democrat.. one of his brothers ( he had 7 and 2 sisters) gop, it caused a family rift when he and my mom (ardent democrat) got into it over Obama and fox news 8 years after my dad passed. They never spoke again.. he died last month without talking to any of us. Before this we had been prepared to go visit them in Pittsburgh..we live in WA. Sad isnt it. Especially because he looked most like my dad. Ill lift a glass to him anyway.

in their late 70's. This went along with an absolutely horrifying descent into racism. It also coincided with a descent into actual dementia for both of them. They died in their late 80's

just one problem with this plan (other than you lying to your parents...)  What will happen when they go to the repair shop to get their car fixed and the tv in the waiting room is tuned to and blaring Fox News out for all to hear  after you had told your parents that they had gone out of business?   :loser:

Why do far left zealots always claim to be moderate.  Our ranking in terms of economic freedom has dropped considerably in the last five years but Obama is a moderate?

the part about all of this that bothers me, is you ppl think that once a person isnt working, that they have A. never worked or B. wont ever work again. both of these assumptions are wrong. if you believe that paying into social security and medicare means you DESERVE it when you retire, then those of us who have worked and paid taxes also DESERVE food stamps in our mid life crises. but then again, its not about money, its about working and being miserable with some of you.

You are not very bright are you?

SS and Medicare have dedicated pay ins for starters and in reality are both cash transfer ponzi schemes both of which are headed to bankruptcy.
When SS began 65 was the qualifying age and 63 was life expectancy.
Can you do basic math?

Your statement that you deserve food stamps since at some point you paid taxes is laughable.
I pay taxes too so I deserve a flame thrower if that is the basic criteria for wants.
Bet you won`t agree though.

This is a thread about a twinkie loving kook on Skin's island who's worried about their Daddy watching Fox when that same nut job is getting their info from MSNBC, alternet, commondreams, politicsusa, etc... Where's this "deserve" reference coming from?

BTW, none of us deserve anything. We have certain rights, and if the gov't is going to force me to pay into SS and Medicare, then I certainly should get what I paid for, even if I would have opted out. But deserve food stamps? No, it's not deserved. It's a handout.

Wow, another supposed "conservative" calling other conservative "you people"! It's no big deal if you're a liberal. We're not like DU, who bans everyone who doesn't think like them. And these retirees should be able to recover at least some of what was stolen from them before they even got their paychecks. Most of them would be a lot better off if they were allowed to choose where their money goes. An IRA has a lot better rate of return than SS. My 95 year old nana lives on SS and can barely afford to live. Her generation believed it when they were told (by democrats) it would be there to provide her with a wonderful retirement.

My little sister uses food stamps. Her sociopath husband left her six months ago and she has six kids. She went from my parents home to her husband's home. She's spent most of her life homeschooling, so I'm very glad food stamps can help her. I don't think she "deserves" them but I sure am thankful that her and her children are able to eat well. However, she's also being very proactive about improving the quality of life for her and her children's lives. She's going to school to learn a trade and picking up whatever side work she can and works very hard to make sure her children still get to youth group, theater, whatever gives them confidence & joy.

There are people here who have disabilities that are serious enough that they can't work. We have wounded warriors who put their lives on the line for us. If anyone deserves the support of our citizens, it's them. Even so, you'll find these men and women would rather work than sit home and will do whatever job their limitations allow. We're a generous people. Conservatives especially give money to charities we believe in and would give more if we had more to give. No one wants to see a child starve but we also don't want generations of families living off welfare. It's damaging to their self esteem and leaves them with no hope of improving their lives or the lives of their children.

As far as being miserable, that's up to you. You can have a job you detest and still be happy and be thankful that you have one when so many others are out of work. You can be thankful you have a job to pay for your leisure time. You can be thankful you aren't taking money from the hard work of other citizens and that you're contributing your fair share to the collective, since fairness is so important to you. You can be thankful the taxes you pay out of your hard work will provide another person money to spend their day in a library. You can spend your free time doing activities you love and being with people you love. You can look for a better job while this one provides for your needs. You can choose to not let a lousy job make you feel sorry for yourself by thinking about how rotten your life is 24/7. It's cliche, but attitude is everything.
