Problem with either form of Tri Care if you're a retiree is the out of pocket expense you have to pay and the IIRC enrollment in Medicare Part B that's mandatory to maintain Tri Care coverage after you retire.

Prime to me whether active or retired is the closest you can get to decent coverage and treatment.

told me he is 100% disabled. Does not have to worry about medical care ever, and in fact, the doctor arranged for him to get free transportation to the VA hospital so he doesn't have to pay for a Cab to get there. He also has free dental as well and can get eye wear if he needs it.

Sounds like a sweet deal for him, not to mention he gets to occasionally try some of my pumpkin spice cookies

DUmbass, you don't get free medical care at the VA just because you're a veteran, aside from, IIRC, a yearly physical. You have to be either retired or disabled due to military service. If you retired at 20+, or less if it was medical, but you already admitted you never got hurt, how the **** do you forget 20+ years of military service?

Your life has to be total shit to brag about qualifying for VA care.  I qualify and wouldn't go anywhere near a VA butcher shop.  This is however one of the unsung nightmares of O'bungacare in that they dumped millions of veterans into the VA who didn't previously qualify for treatment because the had no service related disability.  They will crush the already swamped system.

Oh hell yes BigDog!!!! The VA facility in Huntington, WV, I won't call it a hospital, did their damndest to kill my dad. About 8 or 9 times. That was when they wasn't trying to cut his foot off for a shattered ankle. Only good thing about it was they did give you pain meds.... lots of pain meds. I think that was why he liked it. Wouldn't go anywhere else.

One example: He took high blood pressure meds. Lisono-something-or-nother. 20 mg. They gave him a script, filled it, and when got home and took it, 20 minutes later he passed out on the floor. Mom called me in a panic after calling 911.

I got there before the ambulance, me and the next door neighbor picked him up, he was alive and somewhat aware, and put his 240 pound ass on the couch. Ambulance showed up, asked me what meds he was on, I handed them the pill bottles cause I can't pronounce half of them, and the EMT asked me why he was taking 200 mg of Lisono-something-or-other.   

That is the VA for you.   

As far as I am concerned they should give the vets free care at regular hospitals and send all the dummies to VA. The country would be better off.

That's "lisonopril," IIRC.  I was on it (10mg), then I started to get dizzy spells while driving.  Read the label--that's one of the side effects.  Ended it quickly.  Had one blood pressure reading since; it was the same as it was when I was on the damned stuff.

That sounds like it, BlueState. Poor guy took so many meds it was hard to keep track of them all.  The one that got me was his "Sodium Bicarbonate".
Well I looked it up on google and it turns out it was freaking baking soda!!!!  Paying 5 bucks for a month for these pills when I could have got a box of damned Arm and Hammer for like a dollar at the dollar store!!!!

VA sucks.
