wow...I completely forgot I'm a Veteran and won't need to sign up for ACA!
I tried to sign up for ACA and could not do it. I was kinda nervous about the cost because last year our family earned about 75,000 dollars. Of course most of that was liquidated retirement for me and my wife. We only realized a fraction of that because of penalties and taxes. At the time we really needed the money because we had both been fired from our jobs.
So on paper we would probably have to pay more for insurance than we could actually afford. We are both working now, but I am only working part time...so our actual income is maybe 45 annum.
Long story short...did not sign up for ACA (couldn't)...VA sent me a letter reminding me I'm a Veteren...now I am signed up for the VA hospital...

dodged that bullet...

WTF.

told me he is 100% disabled. Does not have to worry about medical care ever, and in fact, the doctor arranged for him to get free transportation to the VA hospital so he doesn't have to pay for a Cab to get there. He also has free dental as well and can get eye wear if he needs it.

Sounds like a sweet deal for him, not to mention he gets to occasionally try some of my pumpkin spice cookies

You DUmb bitch. It doesn't sound like a sweet deal to me. Think of what he endured to get the 100% disability status.

2. I'm one of those lucky Vets

I was never hurt once or injured in the line of Duty! I did get my ass kicked once by a couple of yakuza bouncers outside of Yokota AFB, but admittedly I deserved it.
They built a brand spanking new VA Hospital just 5 minutes from where I live. I suppose I was due a little luck after the last couple of years.

3. I got a letter from the VA about a month ago stating that I was covered by the VA and that complied

with the ACA.

I never got one. obama must be arranging for conservative vets to meet a death panel.

6. That has to be wrong,...

I'm not an expert on the VA health system, but I'm an associate member of a veterans organization (Dad was a Marine Corps Vet with 15 years of service). I know that many of our members, both peace time and combat vets, disabled and non-disabled receive their care via the VA. Many I believe whose income is above your listed amount (business owners and mid level execs) go the VA.

How could someone forget that they were a veteran?

When the SHTF, I have a long list and lots of ammo.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

Another example of the genius of the primitives. They are so smart that trivial facts like being a veteran slips their minds. Must be all the other knowledge they possess kicks out trivial facts like this.

Dear DUmmies--I am an honorably discharged veteran.  I do not have a VA disability rating (thank goodness) but as I did not serve in certain time periods or certain boxes on the map, despite the ever-present risk regardless, nor did I retire from the military, I am not eligible for VA care.  Meh.  I left with my health intact, and for that, am ever grateful.  They owe me nothing.

You might want to reconsider that "eligibility" as well, especially considering a disability rating right now is taking upwards of 2 years to be determined.

Your life has to be total shit to brag about qualifying for VA care.  I qualify and wouldn't go anywhere near a VA butcher shop.  This is however one of the unsung nightmares of O'bungacare in that they dumped millions of veterans into the VA who didn't previously qualify for treatment because the had no service related disability.  They will crush the already swamped system.

My Dad served in the Navy during WW2 and could have used VA services but he avoided going to them because he kinda got the impression they experimented on patients. Now maybe that was a concern of that generation or something, but I remember other vets that agreed with him. Then again I know of an older man who needed a hip replacement about 15 years ago and went to the VA and was very happy with the way things went and the care he received.

But my Dad...... you would have had to drag him there.

Like most things, VA care varies greatly from facility to facility.  It is a well known fact that they are understaffed and criminally underfunded.  Not a recipe for great care and I will avoid them until I'm desperate.  At least that way I'm not taking up resources needed by vets. who have less than I.

Em,

VA disability ratings are not directly tied to "ability to work". A Veteran can have 100% disability and work.

On the other hand, a Veteran with rating of 60% or above for one condition, or 70% or above combined rating for two or more, who is unable to work because of the service connected condition(s), can apply for Individual Unemployability (IU) compensation, which increases payment to the 100% level.

My initial interpretation of her saying " One of the Veterans I work with" was that she was a physical therapist or similar occupation.

I know virtually nothing about the VA and/or VA medical care.  When I retired from the Navy in 1988, I did go to the VA hospital for an evaluation, and was told I was eligible for a 10% disability rating due to hearing loss.  I didn't do anything more with them, and was never processed for that loss.

Some years later I was chatting with a nurse from the VA hospital, and was told by her that the VA hospital system likes to get "people like you" (meaning me) because with the income-based sliding scale for charges, they get a lot of money from us.

Those are the only two encounters I've had with the VA, and comprises my total experience/knowledge of it/them - and I don't even know how accurate the second item is, or was.
This too shall pass.

But they are not thrown completely under the bus.  From the article (dated last year) linked
Quote
With the presidential election over, Defense officials are expected to announce soon that military retirees and their dependents living more than 40 miles from a military treatment facility or base closure site will lose access to TRICARE Prime, the military's managed care option.

These beneficiaries would be expected to shift to TRICARE Standard, their fee-for-service insurance option, which would mean an increase in out-of-pocket costs for beneficiaries who are frequent users of health services.

Much more at the link
