CANBERRA, Australia (AP) - Two U.S. fighter jets have dropped four unarmed bombs in Australia's Great Barrier Reef Marine Park when a training exercise went wrong.

The two AV-8B Harrier jets launched from aircraft carrier USS Bonhomme Richard each jettisoned an inert bomb and an unarmed explosive bomb in the World Heritage-listed marine park off the coast of Queensland state on Tuesday, the U.S. 7th Fleet said in a statement on Saturday.

The four bombs were dropped in more than 50 meters (164 feet) of water away from coral to minimize possible damage to the reef, the statement said. None exploded.

The jets from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit had intended to drop the ordnances on the Townshend Island bombing range but aborted the mission when controllers reported the area was not clear of hazards.

I'm surprised the primitives were not clamoring over each other to demonstrate their understanding of a Eeeeeeuropean word. 

I assumed bonhomme would be right up there with their use of bleu.

I'm a small town guy from Sheldon, Il, I would have never seen the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef had it not been for the US Navy.  My wife and I have returned to Cairns several times to celebrate.

I wonder if it's occurred to the primitive--probably not--that we have fighter jets and stuff in Australia because Australia wants us to have them there?

It's one of the melancholy stories of the demise of the British Empire, the greatest and most humane civilizing influence in the history of the world, when they became too weak to defend everybody, especially those furthest away from them, and someone else had to be asked to step into the void.

One thing about the article is the USS Bonhomme Richard is not an aircraft carrier (CV or CVN) but an LHD of the Wasp class, an amphibious assault ship.

One thing the DUmbass who posted this failed to mention is this from the article:

That is a problem. Many weapons loadouts are not recoverable ie you can't land with them back on the carrier. Your only other alternative is a land based landing, or an intentional jettison. Sometimes certain loadouts aren't even able to be landbased recovered. In the case of intentional jettison, it is usually pre planned and pre briefed.

And not a single **** was given by the coral. The coral will continue to grow over and around the harmless bombs until they become part of its structure just like the rocks and sand beneath the rest of it, just like what happens to old ships that are sunk to create "artificial reefs" for coral and other sea life to grow on

The only harm that came was from the exploding heads of witless DUmbasses, and not a single **** was given by the rest of humanity over that.

You have no idea how WRONG you are.............matter of fact the US bought ALL of the british Harriers, ALL OF THEM.  The Brits don't have them anymore.  The Spanish , Italians and the Proud all fly the Harrier. 

The F-35B variant was made STVOL for the main purpose of replacing the AV-8B for the Proud, which became more important after an entire squadron was lost in Afghanistan.

back to the false outrage, I'm quessing the "not clear of hazards" meant stupid ass people on a bombing range.

Which do you think would make a bigger splash: dropping another of these inert bombs, or nads doing a cannonball into a pool?

Once, while waiting for a connecting flight at the St. Louis airport, I looked out across to the other side of the field and saw a Harrier jet hovering, rotating, and moving slowly, maybe fifty feet off the ground, at the McDonnell Douglas facility. I'd seen them on TV, but still an impressive sight in person.

I knew we had some of the Harrier jets but I didn't know we bought them all. Back in the late 70's... might have been early 80's... we were at an airshow and one of those jets came in and landed verticle. I thought it was the coolest thing.

The AV-8 is a direct descendent of the Hawker/ Sidley Kestrel program.
One of those was on display at Fort Rucker in the mid sixties. (I have photos)

I love the Aviation Museum at Mother Rucker. I did see a Kestral at the Smithsonian as well.
