I've been fined!

OK-I'm not THAT indignant.

Here--I was at a tiny lake in northern Wisconsin-no motors, etc.

My wife and I were staying at the only campsite on the lake-there are no houses-just us(awesome!)

I was fishing in my kayak in 3 feet of water, 10 feet from shore-fully licensed, no illegal fish in the boat.

A forest service young man paddles up to me and asks for my info-I give it to him.

BUT--I have no life jacket in my kayak.

I am fined $160.00.

I did know the rule about life jackets, but being a great swimmer(not needed) and a very experienced boat guy, I threw caution to the wind.

The feller got through with the particulars and said he needed to site me about the life jacket. Needed to. I think not.

I asked him how much the fine was and he did not even know-he had to look it up. If he is going to affect my income, shouldn't he know this?

So. . .I know these people have jobs to do, but what happened to discretion or personal judgement? I was truly doing NOTHING wrong at all and was not behaving unsafely.

I support the forest service, but black and white crap thinking like this makes me less supportive and more distrustful.

$160.00 is a lot for me. 3 feet of still water-no one on the lake-tell me I was unsafe and deserving of "punishment"-or was it a young guy throwing authority in my face. I know this pales in comparison to other misuses of power, but it is frustrating and disappointing.

Careful there junior you might sound like a lousy freeper troll questioning why the government thinks they know what is best for you. If this saves even one life it is worth it, so pay up, sit down, and take responsibility for the government that you voted for.

22. I know the laws here-and I know I was in violation-

it does not make it right. Again-discretion on the part of those invested with authority is vital to maintaining trust.

You violated the law, willingly you pay the fine. Just like 0bamacare there is no discretion there.
Somehow these same people would be totally fine if a gun owner was fined for having 8 rounds in a "clip".

I love it when DUmmies pay the price for what they advocate for the rest of us. They want big government so when they suffer at the hands of that big government I laugh my ass off at them.

Speaking of being fined, there's an article over at Yahoo about smokers under obozocare.  Hey lurking primitives who smoke:  Your bill will now be about $1 million per year.  Pay up.  Nothing about fatasses, though.  Not that we know about yet.  Or drug users like Taverner.  (I think they'll get him anyway because I think he smokes).  Or gay people running around to bug catching parties.

My nephew( my nieces husband) will tell you, kayaks are tippy at best. He owns Seven Rivers Paddling.  In three feet of water, one is actually more likely to hit their head on a rock.  I wonder if this guy was wearing a helmet. He more than likely got the fine, cus he started arguing with the forestry officer

Yeah, what happened to it?  My discretion and personal judgement tell me I could do better saving for my retirement than the government can so why do I have to pay into social security??

I thought read somewhere that the WI DNR or the Federal version of it in WI were cracking down on boating violations this summer as a way to reduce boating deaths.

Odds are the DUmp monkie was being an ass to the Games and Parks guy. Oh, yeah, I am sure he had to look up the fine. I have to look up most of mine too. I know the common ones of course, but it's the odd ones that mess you up. However, I always look them up, just to be sure. Speeding over 20 mph? $120.00 + $48.00 court costs. 1) Knows about the law and violates it anyways.
2) Surprised when he is held accountable to the law.

Q) How can a DUmmy be surprised when he knows the law?
A) He is a liberal and liberals are all above the laws they set for you and me.

Pure and simple, jackass.  The law states a life preserver/flotation device, appropriate to size/weight, for each occupant.   I am an excellent swimmer.  I've spent almost half of my life on/in the water.  I can tread water for hours in rather adverse seas, if I am conscious.  Don't matter.

Everyone is overlooking the fact that DUmmies lie, all the time.

Odds are overwhelming the incident didn't happen.

If it actually did happen, the DUmbass was in a motorboat, in a hundred feet of water, was drunk, and mouthed off to the officer.

Or, it was a car, in Chicago, and the DUmmy got a ticket for running a stop sign.

Or, he was arrested for drunk and disorderly and the cops found a bag of weed and a bunch of oxy tablets in his pockets.

At any rate, the kayak deal is pure fiction.

Yeah, cuz no one who knew how to swim has ever drowned in 10 feet of water, especially if the water was calm.

But seriously, at what point would it be reasonable to NOT cut him some slack? 20 ft.? 30? Mildly calm water? Medium wave activity (if that could even be measured)?

How stupid to head out onto a lake, few people around not wearing a life jacket in  even 3 feet of water.

Have you any idea of what happens when one gets an Asama attack, a problem with chest pains or even stomach cramps and they are not wearing a life vest.

Lucky you if someone observes your going over board, the cost to call in a medical chopper to transport you to a hospital even when wearing a life vest is going to be huge and if you drown, your family has to pay the bill.

Dumb shits that can when totally healthy can swim like a Dolphin and run into some thing like a bee sting allergy they do not expect and no life jacket can die and cost a fortune for the police to find their body and family to suffer for days or weeks.

I have no time to worry about the Ass *oles that head up the river with a boat load of kids and not one of them wearing a life jacket.     They hit a rock, boat over turns and the some of the tots drown, horrid but I have no sympathy for the parents, it was their lack of safety that killed those children, Poor kids.

Little to no  sense or responsibility these days, everyone cries for the parents loss of the children, but I cry for the kids that died due to their parents actions.

Yes I am getting more intolerant as I age and wonder how I lived due to my parents actions or my kids living to become adults with my ignorance of dangers lurking around the corner.

I paddle all the time in the ocean mostly. I too am a water baby (water polo, swim team, surf, water ski/board...) and do not wear a life vest paddling. I do however, keep one on board because of the wallet-wack the harbor patrol would love to give me. I also sail and on catamarans DO have a life vest on in case of accidents just like water skiing because of the higher risk factor. I don't wear one out on a power or mono hull sail boat but you better believe I have more than enough for all aboard and up to date flares.  It is all a mater of common sense, risk management and the law.

If a $180 fine affects your income that severely, maybe you should have shown some forethought and had a lifejacket on board.  It is not law enforcements job to distinguish between those who can afford a fine and those who cannot when citing people, their job is to enforce the law.  You state that you were aware of the law, and the law does not say "unless you are an excellent swimmer" or "unless the water is calm and you don't go more than 10 feet from shore." The law says that if you are in a water craft there should be a life preservation device for every person on-board, or something along those lines.

I know that I can't afford a speeding ticket right now, so I don't speed.  Amazing how that has helped to keep me from getting a ticket.
