GREAT Thunderstorm!
« on: May 26, 2013, 06:36:27 PM »
Right overhead. Pouring rain, hail stones and constant thunder. way cool.
The weather sites said no chance till 9 or 10. and they report no rain at all right now.
The thunder has not quit for like 15 minutes now...Probably should shut off the computer.

Love a good thunderstorm, when it has rain with it.

I was just in one at 3:30.  My poor car now looks like a golf ball, but the windshield is intact and I'm safe.

Lasted a half an hour and...gone. wah.
had the curtains open, the window cranked, just enjoyed the show.

The constant lightning and thunder amazed me...it didn't stop for a moment.

I like that, too.  Especially when I'm like twenty miles away and get to watch it.  When youngest was back east in college and got homesick, her request was a video of a good thunderstorm rolling across the plains.  We saw some great ones while making the video.

Here's a picture of Mother Nature's notion of body work.  Doesn't show up great, but we all know what hail damage looks like, I suppose.

I saw the flash flood watch. Just drove through Beaverdale and had to keep weaving to avoid the water.

I may be looking at a funnel cloud, bit I'm probably mistaken. Its at the edge of a cloud and highlighted against clearer sky. Its darker than the clouds above and not shaped like a funnel...just like a straight tube going down.
No sirens are going off like they are supposed to, so I'm not sure.

Sure is weird, though. Its got two extensions stretching out of it, and they look like funnels but they aren't moving either.

Might have been one even though it didn't form more completely.  Glad it's gone.

I was in a tornado warning once, while visiting relatives in KS. The sky overhead was very dark, while there was sunset light all around the horizon, that gave the appearance of being in a dome.  We saw three funnels pull down from the far edges of the dark clouds, but none ever actually touched the ground.  The warning wasn't raised until about 4:00 A.M.  Scary time, especially at night.

I love electrical storms too.  We get very few here, but have been in a couple of really bad ones that were frightenig.  The worst was when we were driving across AZ.  The bolts were cracking and hitting the ground all around us.  The other bad one was in the San Diego county mountains camping.  We were in the camper and the kids' hair would stand on end, just before you heard the crack of the bolt.

I love good thunder storms. The best I ever saw was in New Jersey in 1981 sometime around June. We were visiting my Great Aunt for a week. One night, around 2 am, we woke up to what had to be the thunder storm from hell. The lightning was so frequent that the sky was continually lit up. It never got dark. The thunder was a constant roar. It rained so hard you couldn't see the house across the street. This went on for about an hour. I have never seen anything else like it.

I detest thunder storms.

Those of you not living in the SE.... did you know that the lightning is the worst in the country, in the SE? I grew up in IA and N IL and always thought it was the worst in the midwest, until I moved to the SE. According to the meteorologists around here, not me....

You do live in the mountains (or near them).  Those things are rain sponges.

It's been the coldest Spring since 1984. 7th wettest January through April on record, or since 1895. 2008 was slightly wetter (and it was).

Weather folks are talking all about flash flood watches, severe storms, and a tornado watch for tonight.
They say its supposed to stay south of Des Moines. we'll have to see.

as it is, lightning hit a transformer far to the west and my workplace power went down for the last two hours.

Looks to be an interesting night...
