REPORT: $6 Million Worth Of Hair Donations To Locks Of Love Have Gone Missing
Source: Businessinsider.com

Hold onto your ponytails: A new report alleges that Locks of Love — a well-known charity that makes wigs for children suffering from medical hair loss — has disclosure inadequacies that could total up to $6 million annually.

Locks of Love reportedly receives around 104,000 hair donations per year to make "hair prosthetics," according to the report by Nonprofit Investor, an organization that evaluates charities.

That should be enough to produce around 2,080 hairpieces, taking into account that 80% of donated hair can't be used (too short, gray, or bleached), and that it takes six to 10 donations to make a Locks of Love wig.

But in 2011, Locks of Love made just 317 of its custom-fitted wigs, according to Nonprofit Investor.

I've known so many high school girls who have donated their hair to this organization. Is it a scam.

First from the sick DUmbass that we would do a grave dance if he got killed.

I donated a 15" + pony tail in 2009 to them well after this picture was taken). They told me that the sale of ALL hair helps them to make wigs for kids.

Something tells me they were more interested in selling hair than making wigs.

S/h/it doesn't, but s/h/it habitually lies about it, because saying s/h/it does makes s/h/it look "compassionate" - at least to passersby who have no clue other than the overpowering smell that the DUmmy is full of shit.

Ahhh I reread it...80% of donated hair can't be used. So dimbass donated and it was thrown right into the trash once it got to where they sort the hair for processing. But at least the dummie felt good watching his hair take the long road to the waste bin.

You can donate both hair with hair coloring and grey hair.

Looking at the pic, I'd say that it was a used car lot, not a new car dealership that he professes to work at. That being said, he is not dressed the way the top IT tech for the owners several dealerships.

They degrease it, dye it, cut it up, and use it for Barbie hair.

From the article: donation and use are two different things apparently. Grey hair is used to offset manufacturing costs but not actually used in the hairpieces. Also, many people are not even aware when they color their hair whether they have used developer or bleach to lighten the hair first--some people really don't know or consider having colored over bleach to be 'no longer bleached' hence probably the reason for so many unused locks I would expect.

However, from the horse's mouth directly:

Quote
GUIDELINES FOR ACCEPTABLE DONATIONS

Hair that is colored or permed is acceptable.
Hair cut years ago is usable if it has been stored in a ponytail or braid.
Hair that has been bleached (usually this refers to highlighted hair) is not usable.  If unsure, ask your stylist. We are not able to accept bleached hair due to a chemical reaction that occurs during the manufacturing process. **If the hair was bleached years ago and has completely grown out it is fine to donate.
Hair that is swept off of the floor is not usable because it is not bundled in a ponytail or braid.
Hair that is shaved off and not in a ponytail or braid is not usable. If shaving your head, first divide hair into multiple ponytails to cut off.
We cannot accept dreadlocks. Our manufacturer is not able to use them in our children’s hairpieces. We also cannot accept wigs, falls, hair extensions or synthetic hair.
Layered hair is acceptable if the longest layer is 10 inches.
Layered hair may be divided into multiple ponytails.

Curly hair may be pulled straight to measure the minimum 10 inches.
10 inches measured tip to tip is the minimum length needed for a hairpiece.
    Printable Guidelines (PDF)

    Please Note:

Shorter hair will be separated from the ponytails and sold to offset the manufacturing costs. Although the shorter hair cannot be used in the hairpieces, it still greatly helps to reduce costs.
Gray hair will be accepted and sold to offset the manufacturing costs.
Colored hair is not usable if it is colored over bleached hair.
Because Locks of Love creates custom hairpieces for each child, we are unable to accept donations of wigs, falls, hair extensions or synthetic hair.

From Locks of Love's site that actually sounds most likely :lmao:

  • Oh snap!
These comments are disgusting by the DUmmies.

I am currently growing my hair out for a Locks of Love donation.  I NEVER grow out my hair too long because my hair gets too thick and heavy.  However, it's for a good cause and I have the right kind of hair for donations.  It's not gray, bleached, dyed, etc.  DUmmies, some asshole STOLE hair from a charity that makes wigs for CHILDREN.  It's makes you look foolish to blame the CEO of a non-profit for stealing the hair donated.

Also, DainBamaged, they didn't want your hair because it's GRAY!  Moron.

Yeah, considering the hair is used to make wigs for sick children. Most kids wouldn't want a wig of gray hair, especially since I probably don't want to know what's crawling in that mess of hair.
As an intern within my church's youth program, this story really does piss me off, for a couple reasons:
1. One of the teens I work with (Though she'll be moving to another state in a month) was diagnosed with terminal brain tumors at age six, yet she was healed through what could only be called a divine miracle, and has been living a happy, cancer free life for several years now, she'll turn 15 in July. When she had it, she had several wigs apparently, and I wouldn't be surprised if at least one was from Locks of Love. The thought of a current kid with cancer like hers being deprived of a wig to preserve some level of dignity because of some thief is sickening.
2. Another teen I work with (A couple years older than the other one) recently donated much of her hair to Locks of Love.
Here's hoping whoever did it answers for his crimes.

Yep mb bothersome here too. I donated during the very brief time I didn't process my hair at all or before I had any grays. Disheartening to think something someone is doing to help a sick child maintain some normalcy and dignity has been soiled by a thief.

Perhaps the stolen hair is shipped to Germany to make mattresses as the former supplier is now out of business.
