Being a tourist in a resort destination is risky. Even if the drug lords leave you alone, the police can be almost as bad. Too many people have driven down there, never to be heard from again. Even if you get stopped for speeding or a fender bender, you could wind up in prison for days with all kinds of ugly.
And there is a very high mortality rate among reporters, or someone perceived to be nosing around and asking questions.

But the cousin, on the other hand, it's her own country, her own people, her own language. She should have no problems running around where she wants, looking at what she wants to see.
