Hobby Lobby May Close

Posted on March 1, 2013 by sfaw1

David Sloan “The wisdom that comes from above is, first, pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, without uncertainty or insincerity.” – James 3:17

By David Green, the founder and CEO of Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc.

When my family and I started our company 40 years ago, we were working out of a garage on a $600 bank loan, assembling miniature picture frames.. Our first retail store wasn’t much bigger than most people’s living rooms, but we had faith that we would succeed if we lived and worked according to God’s word. From there, Hobby Lobby has become one of the nation’s largest arts and crafts retailers, with more than 500 locations in 41 states. Our children grew up into fine business leaders, and today we run Hobby Lobby together, as a family.

We’re Christians, and we run our business on Christian principla. I’ve always said that the first two goals of our business are (1) to run our business in harmony with God’s laws, and (2) to focus on people more than money. And that’s what we’ve tried to do. We close early so our employees can see their families at night. We keep our stores closed on Sundays, one of the week’s biggest shopping days, so that our orkers and their families can enjoy a day of rest. We believe that it is by God’s grace that Hobby Lobby has endured, and he has blessed us and our employees. We’ve not only added jobs in a weak economy, we’ve raised wages for the past four years in a row. Our full-time employees start at 80% above minimum wage.

But now, our government threatens to change all of that. A new government healthcare mandate says that our family business MUST provide what I believe are abortion-causing drugs as part of our health insurance. Being Christians, we don’t pay for drugs that might cause abortions, which means that we don’t cover emergency contraception, the morning-after pill or the week-after pill. We believe doing so might end a life after the moment of conception, something that is contrary to our most important beliefs. It goes against the Biblical principles on which we have run this company since day one. If we refuse to comply, we could face $1.3 million PER DAY in government fines.

Thanks, king obummer

Good for them for sticking to their guiding principals.

If they close, another business will just enjoy the increased revenue.

We are a land of laws. It sucks, but the law has to be followed or you close your doors.

I've have never seen anyone take the time to see a doctor for the morning after pill and receive a written prescription. They simply come in and pay cash for it.

The same drug is already used at hospitals for rape victims, including those that include incest,  is Hobby Lobby against that also?

Well, I'm seeing this as another type of Chik-Fil-A situation. Corporation operates itself under what it terms as basic Judeo-Christian tenets. Government comes in and tells them what they have to put in their mandated health insurance program. They refuse to do it and, rather than pay a costly penalty each day, launched a lawsuit. Happens every day -- too often, I might add.

Whether or not they close the doors remains to be seen. But I applaud their stand on principle.

I don't think that has anything whatsover to do with a woman that has unplanned sex the night before and comes in to a pharmacy for a "morning after" pill. She's doing that voluntarily. Rape and incest victims in the hospital, seems to me, might not be horribly worried about the Judeo-Christian tenets on abortion when they might very well be impregnated by that sexual attack.

Nope, none of your examples, Rob, have a damned thing to do with HL's premise.

I would close the doors before I allowed obama, or anyone else, to have control over my code of ethics.

Come to think of it, unions do create jobs. Companies have to hire two workers to do the work of one.

If people are paying cash without a prescription, then it hardly matters whether or not their insurance pays for it.

I work for a Catholic hospital.  I have excellent insurance (or at least I will once it has kicked in) but it doesn't cover birth control.  If I want birth control I can have a doctor write me a prescription and pay for it out of pocket, but my insurance won't pay for it.

As it should be IMO.  I know of no plan that covers condoms so why should the BC pill be covered?

Well, I'm seeing this as another type of Chik-Fil-A situation.

Chick Fil A was told they were not going to be allowed to open restaurants  in large cities by the mayors of those cities. It had nothing to do with health coverage and birth control.

Chick Fil A's situation was a clear violation of the First Amendment.

The same insurance companies that helped write Obamacare, already offered birth control to policy holders. Until Obamacare goes away, these same issues with coverage for contraceptives will not go away.

We both know Hobby Lobby is not going to close. They make too much money. They will just make everyone part time like every other place is doing so they don't have to pay benefits.  O-) I have a feeling each retail location only has a few full time employees in the first place.

I only do business with rabbits.

There are a lot of laws that I am not "ok" with and I think Obamacare sucks. As Americans continue to elect the same group of individuals that pass such laws, we are stuck with such laws. I pay higher health insurance premiums because of it.

I agree, but that is what Hobby Lobby put in their letter....

I have never heard of a "week after pill" in the United States. I guess it makes their statement seem more dramatic.

Chick Fil A was told they were not going to be allowed to open restaurants  in large cities by the mayors of those cities. It had nothing to do with health coverage and birth control.

Not that it matters much toward the OP, but this isn't the whole story. The CEO made what some would call an inflammatory statement about gay marriage, which caused all kinds of crap. Then yes, the political leadership of San Fransicko then Rahm in Chicago made statements of nonsupport for Chik Fil A's position. Whatevs.

The point is, I said this was a Chik-Fil-A type of situation. And I drew my analogy. You can pick nits if you like, but it changes nothing.

And, by reference, you seem to infer that Hobby Lobby's situation is nothing like Chik Fil A's. Maybe in a legal sense, but I still think there is a parallel. Again, whatevah.

Obamacare going away?  :rotf:  Don't hold your breath.  We're stuck with that POS legislation forever. I suspect you're right about that. Sorta like the Dollar General stores. As to them making scads of money, I guess that explains why I spent $120 on a picture frame - custom-made, of course, but jeezus....

I'm playing devil's advocate. I understand what you are saying.  The free market system has been compromised for many years by the left and big gov't and it sucks. That is why we live in a land of high "true" unemployment and underemployment.

I think if our election would of had different results last fall, Obamacare might of been history. We can only hope.

I need boxes to store QSL cards (Approx. 4"x6") and they had a bunch of them cheap.

I understand what you are saying but contraceptives require a prescription and condoms do not.

Many women, including young girls that have no intention of having sex, use contraceptives for reasons other then birth control. I won't go into the bloody details here.  O-)
