For those that quote Benjamin Franklin...why aren't you consistent?
I keep hearing Franklin's quote about keeping it, and I answer with Jefferson.
Thomas Jefferson wrote all MEN are created equal and was talking about perhaps 40% OF THE PEOPLE THERE at that time
He neglected to mention blacks, women and slaves
Then they forgive Jefferson and say he is a product of his time, blah blah blah blah blah blah
So, if Thomas Jefferson's words then have to be formulated different in 2013 from their ABSOLUTE MEANING
then it goes without saying, That Benny's statement on "it's theirs if they can keep it"
needs to be applied to 2013 terms
Okay...let's see if I can parse this. We're talking here about "all men are created equal" and Ben Franklin's response "A Republic, if you can keep it". Evidently the issue is Jefferson using the generic term "men" instead of "men, women, blacks, Latinos, gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transsexual and damned confused". Thus, in order to bring Jefferson to 2013 you have to pretend, if he said this today, he'd make sure to include all our special, protected classes.
But Franklin's quote isn't gender specific. In fact, the question was supposedly posed by a woman. So this can't be a gender issue here. I'm confused.
You can't dismiss Jefferson being a vile person, just make that hand motion to wave it by,
without also changing Franklin's meaning.
Get it?
this ain't you grandfathers or great grandfathers or even father's USA.
This is 2013.
real bad things happen now, that aren't from the old cold war countries and old 1700s or 1800s days.
Okay, Jefferson is a bad guy because he used "men" (still considered a generic word for everyone) but we can brush this aside. But do we still get to keep the quote if we add all the protected classes? And how do we change Franklin's meaning? How does one affect the other?
And were there really NO bad things happening before now? Revolutionary War, Civil War, both WW's, murder, rape, robbery were better then?
This is 2013
Please enter the modern age.
stop partying like its 1799.
Thank you and of course, this is IMHO only, feel free to argue it.
also, vice presidents and other leaders no longer have duels in the street with guns(or whatever the 'ell you call what they shot at each other with).
I give up. Maybe I need to go have a couple of drinks and reread the thing.
