The White House has responded to the deport Piers Morgan petition by giving the right wing a little refresher course on the First Amendment.

In response to the petition to deport “British Citizen Piers Morgan for Attacking 2nd Amendment,” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney wrote,

Thank you for participating in We the People to speak out on an issue that matters to you.

Let’s not let arguments over the Constitution’s Second Amendment violate the spirit of its First. President Obama believes that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to bear arms. However, the Constitution not only guarantees an individual right to bear arms, but also enshrines the freedom of speech and the freedom of the press — fundamental principles that are essential to our democracy. Americans may disagree on matters of public policy and express those disagreements vigorously, but no one should be punished by the government simply because he or she expressed a view on the Second Amendment — or any other matter of public concern.

We recognize that the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, sparked an intense, and at times emotional, national conversation about the steps we can take as a country to reduce gun violence. In fact, your petition is one of many on the issue, and President Obama personally responded by sharing his views on this important issue.


In short, President Obama reminded the right that the constitution is not their personal toy. They don’t get to violate the rights of another, or in this case the rest of us, because they disagree with the opinions of others. The right was willing to throw out the freedoms of speech and press, because they were upset over what Piers Morgan said about the Second Amendment.

Obama’s lesson was simple. The Second Amendment is not more important than any of our other constitutionally protected rights.

We don't violate the rights of others, we leave that to you. Every time I turn around you goons demand that yet another right be stripped from us. Then you make up a whole slew of things that are not rights and call them rights because you want us to pay for them.

Why is it DUmmies that everything you consider a right requires more government and more taking from others? Yet everything we consider rights and rights that are spelled out in the Constitution requires government to get the hell out of the way and doesn't take a dime from anyone else.

No one actually believed Morgan was going to be deported for being an insufferable prick. Least of all by the Obama administration. It was a symbolic act, you numbnuts.

Yes. Speech protected from retaliation by the Government.

Citizen or not, free speech is what it is and it is very disconcerting to hear conservatives wanting the state to take legal action against someone they don't agree with.

Individual is a foreign nation advocating against our laws.
His speech may be protected, his status here, is not.
The intent of the law is to protect citizens againt reprisal.
It does not protect foreigners from removal.

Note to DUmmies...the only reason the WH said "thanks but no thanks" on the deport Piers Morgan petition...is because he's a stupid gun grabber like you Libtards.

Had Morgan been pro 2nd Amendment...they'd have been readying his deportation order as we speak.

I see your point but respectfully disagree. Piers Morgan is a douche of the highest order but I will never advocate a central government taking action against him because of his speech. Should he lose a majority of his viewership and be fired I have no problem with.

It goes both ways. Perhaps if Mark Steyn were deported by the Obama administration you would understand where I am coming from.
