Have I shot one-- sure---I was in the Airborne Infantry.

I've shot pretty much every weapon imaginable---all the way up to a 50mm machine gun. But again---that was in the Military.

But in civilian life... never had a reason to own one.

Personal protection? From what, the off chance someone breaks in my house? Well, it hasn't happened in 55 years.

A hobby? Perhaps... but once you've shot a 50mm, a handgun is quite boring.
I know you meant a .50 cal but you would think having shooting one you would remember that.

Also, just because no one broke into your house, it does not mean no one ever had their house broken into.

I'd love to see some statistics on how many people have used a gun and saved themselves from an intruder or bad guy.

Funny but I don't see too many stories of that happening.
The NRA publishes stories that deal with that but the stories do not reach mass market because it does not reinforce the narrative that guns are evil.

Thank you for that. I could never understand these people who say they are "protecting their property". What? It's worth killing someone over some crap you bought at a store?

I'm an avowed minimalist and there's nothing in my small condo that I can't live without. I don't need a gun, a security system, an attack dog (my dog would wag her tail and show you the way to the cupboard where the dog treats are kept) because I refuse to live every waking moment I have left (I'm an older woman) in fear of what MIGHT happen to me.

I was married to someone like that - couldn't go anywhere, not even up to the corner ice cream stand without strapping on his gun. He lived in fear of everything and he's suffered in more ways than one because of that fear, but you could never get him to see it. It's why I'm no longer with him. He was also a bully and a coward and if a real man confronted him he'd quiver in his shoes.
Protecting their property does not just mean physical items but maintaining the security of the home and the people inside from people who intead to do them harm.

It really is a critical metric but there is no way to track it.

I don't know anyone, male or female, that has had something happen to them outside the home.

I have heard of drive-by shootings in bad neighborhoods, and how are you going to defend yourself when a car drives by and shoots you? How fast can you pull out your gun and defend yourself when you're already on the ground, bleeding to death?

What's more, drive-by shootings and other such things we have courtesy of people who have a gun fetish, and insist that guns of all kinds should be freely sold. This country has more guns than people. Ridiculous. Absurd. DANGEROUS!

And far and way the most effective self defense weapon is a handgun.

I teach firearms mostly to GLBTs and women for that reason. They are often reluctant gun owners but have come to the realization that until things change, they have little choice. The police cannot be there in real time, and are sometimes part of the problem. These are not people in bad neighborhoods participating in questionable activities. Sometimes it follows them home. T*s are being slaughtered in some cities and NOTHING IS BEING DONE. These are not gun nuts. They will probably never by any kind of long gun, AR, AK, or otherwise. They will disarm when the threat passes.

Maybe you can be the one standing over them telling them that it was better they get their brains bashed in or got tortured and shot rather that own an evil pistol. I however, will continue to help them until the threat passes. It seems the progressive thing to do.

Some serious stupid on the part of Sara Imaboobi. She must not watch the news or read the paper then when someone does use a gun for self defense. How many times have we seen home invasions go one and the home owner(s) were beaten, robbed and sometimes shot. Those home invasions are not done  without the bad guys being armed in some form and I'm pretty certain that even a  DUmmy wouldn't care to be raped by anyone for any reason.

If it wasn't for the fact I was armed the night some ass decided tottake the law into his own hands and shoot his daughters ex boyfriend in the back of the head things may have turned out far worse then that when he entered the store I was working at and ran into the employees instead of me. The man had a .40 cal Glock and three spare magazines on him and he could have shot as many people as he could have had it not been for the fact I was right there in front of him when he came into the store and I had my gun with me. Sorry but the old saying that it is better to have a gun and not need it is better to have need of one and not have it is true.

50MM machine gun? Right. I bought one of those for my wife, Morgan Fairchild.

My dad gave me .22 Marlin 60 and a brick of long rifle on my eighth birthday. We went out and shot it. He showed me safety about firearms and how to properly shoot and maintain it. A couple of friends and I  used to go out and plink by ourselves. I still have that gun but have not shot it in years.

My friends and I had woods by my house, and we'd set up targets at about 10-11 yo and plink with .22s.

I was shooting birds at 8 with a break open .410.

My FIL and I take my boys out shooting at the range. We talk to them about gun safety ad nauseum. My shotgun is where they can't get to it, but if they could, I know they wouldn't. Besides, it's locked.

I had never heard of the Pearl High School shooting until seeing something about it today on Facebook.

From what I've quickly read...

It happened in 1997. A 16 year old boy killed his mother than drove her car to the local high school. At the school he killed two and injured seven. His plan was to then drive to the local Jr. high school and kill some more students.

Thankfully, the assistant principal at the high school wasn't like trumad. The assistant principal had a .45 pistol in his vehicle. He was able to get his pistol and hold the killer at gun point.

If the assistant principal would have been like trumad even more students would have probably been killed.

The reason so many were killed is the fact that you have to be so far from the school with a pistol. So the VP had to run all that way for his gun. Had he had it with him, it would have stopped at the front desk.

Also, nadin "Appalachian School of Law shooting".

There's a reason these two events weren't publicized.

And they also want to pick a fight with us.

I'm 55 years old and have never owned a gun in my life.

Have I shot one-- sure---I was in the Airborne Infantry.

I've shot pretty much every weapon imaginable--- all the way up to a 50mm machine gun. But again---that was in the Military.

I think he meant a Canon with a 50mm lens.
