There have been reports that the shooter, Adam Lanza, had mental health issues. This would very much fit the profile of people who commit that type of crime, from Laurie Dann (who used a gun to murder schoolchildren) to Steven Abrams (who used a car for the same purpose) to Zheng Minsheng (who used a knife).

And here’s a fact you might not know – Connecticut is one of only SIX states in the U.S. that doesn't have a type of “assisted outpatient treatment” (AOT) law (sometimes referred to as “involuntary outpatient treatment”). There’s no one standard for these types of laws, but (roughly speaking) these are laws that allow for people with mental illness to be forcibly treated BEFORE they commit a serious crime. Whereas previous legal standards held that the mentally ill cannot be institutionalized or medicated until they harm someone or themselves, or until they express an immediate intent to do so, AOT laws (again, roughly speaking) allow for preventative institutionalization or forced medication (I highly recommend reading the data cited in the link I provided in this paragraph, especially regarding what is known as “first episode psychosis”).

Truckers and bikers were on twitter tonight coordinating how they could make the caravan of Westboro buses into Newtown just a little bit more "difficult".  Love it.  And as much as I despise Anonymous, they are joining in by hacking Westboro and releasing personal info. It is way past time they met their demise. I hope this is it.

This story was breaking over here about the time I was at a friends house for his daughters 5th birthday party.

Every time I read a new story about this over the weekend I went and hugged my kids.

I won't even try to pretend I know the anguish they're going through.

That is all I did all weekend. My 2yr old kept saying "Stoppp mommy"    I just can't imagine the pain. I don't know if I could live.  I really don't know.

As the country grieves for the families in Newtown, Connecticut, where a crazed gunman killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary on Friday, members of Westboro Baptist Church have announced their intention to picket the funerals of the deceased.

Westboro Baptist member Shirley Phelps-Roper first reported the plan on Twitter, CBSNewYork relates.

Disgusted by Westboro Baptist’s actions, the hacker group Anonymous stepped in on Sunday.

According to msnNOW, the hackers released the private information of Westboro Baptist members online, including phone numbers, professions, birthdays, known relationships, home and email addresses, in retaliation.

Anonymous also included an accompanying video in which they excoriate the self-described church in the strongest of terms, and pledge to destroy it.

WBC exists only to titillate, to outrage, to otherwise inflame people to the point they act rashly against WBC. And that's when WBC cashes in.

But this is the kind of war that will be interesting to watch. And when WBC winds up in the ring with the gladiators from Anonymous and when Anonymous has the spear poised to ram it through WBC's throat, I shall delight in watching the American people collectively turned their thumbs down.

The spectacle will be epic and gratifying.

A lack of protein could cause mental problems.

Newtown to the media: You're making this nightmare worse

"Enough is enough." That's how one local woman summed up the weird and terrible media spectacle that has overtaken her once sleepy hometown.
As Newtowners gathered in shock to comfort one another after a 20-year-old resident went on a shooting spree that killed 20 children and six women at Sandy Hook Elementary School, they also traded curiosities about the crush of TV trucks and notebook-toting reporters that swarmed their usually quiet community.

Teri Brunelli, one of the owners of Everything Newtown - a little shop that sells items like Newtown souvenirs, school supplies, key chains, and hand-knit gloves - said she has been harrassed by television crews. Even when Brunelli declined on-camera interviews, TV producers were calling her multiple times late at night to try to convince her, she said.

"We need you to help us beg people to stop calling the victims," the woman said. "They're in mourning. Someone actually pounded on a friend's door and, literally, they were shouting, 'Someone in this town has to start talking to us, this is our story.' That's how we're being treated."
