What should be the Democratic policy on labor law?

We need to deal with this again at some point.

Complete Repeal of Taft-Hartley 22 (71%)

Passage of "Card-Check" and requirement of instant recognition of a vote to unionize, at a minimum 7 (23%)

1. Taft Hartley should go for sure.

And card check should have been done in 2009.

Don't hold your breath for either, this is no longer a strong labor party.

And even overrode a Presidential veto. It created right to work for less legislation.

Card Check would ease the process of unionization and 2008 Obama ran n it.

15. That's the combination I would vote for.

Europe has no "Taft Hartley" equivalent. Unions are strong, as are wages, because some parts of Germany, France or Italy don't undercut the power of unions in other parts of those countries. Each country has strong legal support for unions that is applied equally throughout the country.

And the fact that Europe is ahead of us in the fiscal crash is evidence of this fact.

Amazing how most of them are non-union yet they'd bow down to the little goons.

Uh, DUmmies?  There's a reason the vast majority of the private sector is non-union.

Union Thugs Stage Protest at Cancer Research Event: “It’s hard to understand why people would protest an event like this”

Posted by Jammie on Dec 07, 2012 at 10:27 am

Say what you will about Cablevision and its owner James Dolan, there are much more preferable ways to stage a protest. At a cancer benefit sure isn’t one of them. And they wonder why most people can’t stand them.

Quote
Disgruntled union workers put their fight against Cablevision over the fight against cancer at a Times Square protest last night.

About 50 members of the Communications Workers of America Local 1109 disrupted a benefit for cancer research at the Hard Rock Cafe, carrying signs and blaring music as attendees streamed in.

Cablevision CEO James Dolan, whose rock band performed at the event, told The Post that the workers’ actions are “despicable.”

“They think being disruptive for their personal gain is more important than beating pancreatic cancer,” he said. “Their values are twisted. I’m surprised at the depth of their lowness. Everyone who deals with them should take note. It’s shameful.”

Feeling shame isn’t a union requirement, that’s for sure.

Quote
“I’m a pancreatic-cancer survivor, and it’s unfortunate that they have to protest an event like this,” said Scott Nelson, 59, who lives in Minnesota.

“The survival rate is so low. It’s one of the least-funded cancers,” Nelson said. “It’s hard to understand why people would protest an event like this.”

Cindy Dolar, of Northport, LI, added, “It’s kind of disgusting that they’re protesting an event to raise money for research on pancreatic cancer. I’m shocked. It’s in very poor taste.”

Defiant Local 1109 members couldn’t care less about what they were disrupting.

Dolan is “a philanthropist and a bully,” said Chris Calabrese, Local 1109’s executive vice president.

And they’re just bullies.

I don't like unions.  I disliked them even more when I learned they went on strike during WWII (airplane bomber plant) and the Korean war (railroad union).  Truman told those rr union members they could go back to work or he would nationalize them.

Oh and the Philadelphia transit strike of 1944.  Disgusting.

Which is why the DUmbasses despise Taft-Hartley; it was inspired by those very actions. The unions gave impetus to the very Act they claim hurts them.

And what I most enjoy about DUmmy union threads  is the fact that most of them are not now nor will they ever be members of a union.  They support the union that their great aunt's uncle Harry belong to back in the thirties.  Not a lot of unions out there for unemployed basement dwelling cheeto munchers, ditto street artists and baristas.  One of the nasty requirements for union membership is to have a JOB.  In the old days it was usually in a trade or craft but now a days it could be as a public servant, regardless it requires you to show up and draw a pay check.

Zeit--you don't have to have a job to be in a union.  Just go to the Local 490, 103, or 976 halls and see how long the wait list is for the new guys.

And considering Seabrook just laid off a buttload of contractors (Shaw) the list got longer still.

There's a reason the 490 guys joke that IBEW stands for, "I'm Broke Every Winter."

Ok, Ok, I stand corrected.   :thatsright:

Yes, you can be an unemployed card carrying union member, however, I suspect they still expect you to pay dues for the privilidge while unemployed nicht wahr?

Then too, there was the guy who claimed the union kept taking dues out of his retirement check for associate membership almost thirty years after he had retired. He had direct deposit and didn't realize it until his wife died and he got looking at things like that.

It use to be imposible for guys to get out of the union when they had direct withdrawal because the union would tell them they could only get out on their anniversary date (there by setting up a catch 22 situation).  By the time the paperwork cleared to cancel the allotment the date had passed and the bill had been paid.  Unions really do suck and being forced to join sucks even harder.  Trust me I know from personal experience as a young lad.

Unions are criminal organizations.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

Now all we need to complete this thread is for the Sam Dodd nutter to log on and tell us that employees should make a living wage while those who started the business and risk their own capital should "keep(ing) a small percentage for the owner."

Yeah, that's what made America the land of opportuity; someone coming up with an idea and everyone making money off it except them.

I hate, hate unions for lots of reasons.  #1 on my list are the teacher unions and I could write a book on the reasons why.  I've lived through months of teamster, long shoreman, grocery, public transportation, air line, doc workers, nurse, carpenter, police, and even hospitality service strikes and protests.

I see them as an anti-American, anti-capitalist, and selfish thugocracy.  They don't even produce on an exceptional level.  They only promote mediocracy at a high price.

They're a monopoly; a monopoly on labor but a monopoly nonetheless.

And like all monopolies: once they corner a market the consumer suffers because of the lack of comeptition.

However, where corporations have anti-trust laws in some places labor monopolies are protected by force of law.

Just a horizontal trust instead of a vertical one, really...dominant control (Thanks to the government protection) of one key input to a given industry's product, to the detriment of a free market in the input they control, and also to the detriment of pricing the final product to an objective market.

THIS MAY BE WHY RIGHT-TO-WORK PASSED EVEN IN MICHIGAN: “According to union documents, ‘representational activities’ (money spent on bargaining contracts for members) made up only 11 percent of total spending for the union. Meanwhile, spending on ‘general overhead’ (union administration and employee benefits) comprised of 61 percent of the total spending.”

What business would remain so with 61% overhead?  Maybe that's a euphemism for golf course.

Excuse my ignorance on this subject but was it not sometime in the 1970 when a union leader stole all the retirement pay from the workers and went on the Lam.   He and the money were no where to be found but the retirees who depended on their on their pension were suddenly left with no retirement. ????

Vaguely as it was so many years ago , I was a house wife changing diapers for a couple of kids with no worry, Hubby was Military.

Flash forward to just a couple years ago when a coworker just shy of retirement told me that he at 18 had with help of family joined the Teamsters Union.   He worked for them for perhaps 18 months and moved on.  Someone told him that what ever he did or as poor as he got to keep paying in dues to the Union.

So he joined other Unions in the next 40 years and when he left his priority was to first keep paying dues to every Union he joined.

What that means is after 25-40 years as a dues paying member he was on the edge of collecting not just #SS but from all the Unions he had put money into as a member for 40+ years.

I asked what would happen if he did not outlive his wife, answer was she would collect on his retirement 5 ways fro

I do not know today if he did retire but I am sure he is not wanting for Union Money.  Safer then a bank or stocks and bonds he told me.
