'Black boxes' likely to be required in cars
Associated Press

December 7. 2012 - The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is expected to propose in the coming days a rule requiring event data recorders — the so-called black boxes in vehicles that record crash data — in all new light vehicles.

The White House Office of Management Budget completed a review of the proposal today, clearing the way for NHTSA to finalize the standard for all cars and light trucks.

It was not immediately clear when the rule would take effect.

The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, an industry group made up of the Detroit 3, Toyota Motor North America, Volkswagen Group of America, Mercedes-Benz USA and six other automakers, urges the government to consider driver privacy, it said. ...

1. can we use it

to prove we weren't speeding?

I had a California cop swear in court my truck was going over 70 -- uphill, with a governor set at 60. Tracking data was not admissible in court (then).

Not to mention when they try to pin their own accidents on their victims. This could be a good thing. Or at least a mixed blessing thing.

CA needs your money more than you do so pay your ticket and shut up!

2. It's Big Brother coming soon to a car near you. Frightening.

You voted for Big Brother then have the nerve to complain when he is watching you.  :whatever:

I may not lock my doors while sitting at a red light and a black man is near, but I sure as hell grab on tight to my wallet when any democrats are close by.

Yes DUchebags, be careful what you wish for.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

You can put lots of neat stuff in black boxes.  Transmitters for like GPS & speed.  Note your location & speed & just mail you your ticket.  Very efficient.

A certain progressive insurance company has been advocating for such a device.
Plug and drive. Tracks your every movement.
Drive like a good little drone, and your payments drop five bucks.
Primitives should love the idea of oversight.
Forgive me if I don't mention the name of that progressive auto/boat/cycle insurance company.

John Adams warned in a letter, “Remember democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet, that did not commit suicide.”

This was many years ago when I read this, but apparently by the early 1980s, the average American-made motor vehicle had more computer on it than Apollo 11 in 1969, which sent the first men to the moon.

To late, you already have an event recorder installed in your air bag equipped vehicle. Air bag computers store everything that was going on before a deployment. It was done as a CYA  by the automakers. You had to have a court order to have an engineer extract the data, unless of course you were suing them then they'd pull it on their own.

The "Snapshot" is exactly what they want, with the feds holding the key to extraction. Big Brother is knocking.

You get the right mechanic, there are ways around this crap. Friend of mine is one. He told me that the "Blow and Go" they use for convicted drunk drivers is easily bypassed if you know what you are doing.

Yeah you can bypass that easily by not drinking and driving.  :-)
