Velvet
« on: November 26, 2012, 07:37:15 PM »
Back in August, I visited International Hearing Dog,  Inc. I met a cute little black dog who was beginning her training. She ran to me and snoosed up my shirt kissing me. I was sure that little black dog wanted me to take her home that day.

In the months since, I e-mailed back and forth with IHDI.  We talked about several dogs, but none of them fit the bill until today. The director sent me an e-mail and pictures of a dog who was finishing the first stage of training- obedience and basic hearing dog stuff- and what did I think?

This is Velvet, a Black Lab/Border Collie mix:

The best part is, Velvet is that same black dog who adopted me back in August!

Now I am working on checking all of the blocks the Army, MEDCOM, Ft Riley, and the hospital requires for Service Dogs.

That is one cute little pooch!!! So you are trying to let them to allow you to take her to work with you??  That would be tres awesome.!! :yahoo: :yahoo: As long as she is a certified hearing dog, it should be okay, I think...

She is pretty, but she's not a pet. Velvet is a working girl.  :-)

The Army is service animal friendly, but there are several steps to go through. My workplace complicates things, being a healthcare facility. I also had to develop a process to notify clients that I have a dog in the office, because some people are allergic, have compromised immune systems, or are afraid of dogs. I am working with two offices from Big Army, three offices on Ft Riley, and four offices within the hospital.

A beautiful working girl!

I once had a German Shepherd who really, really should have gotten a job in the police dept or something.  I kept feeling that he was wasting his talents, just being a pet.  He was fiercely handsome, and could have really kept some DUmmies in line.

Border collie and shepherd mix -- hoo-boy, you're looking at a LOT of smarts!

She's gonna be a challenge to keep occupied, especially if she's a high-energy dog (which I would suspect).

Best of luck with her, BD, and I'm glad that the stars and planets aligned for you and Velvet. She seems like she'll be a great dog.  :cheersmate:

My wife fell in love with Velvet.

I'm running into that at the hospital, too.

I had to lay down the law, that Velvet will not be a mascot or cuddle-buddy. She'll be there to work.

I don't think it will help.  :-)

Best thing you can do for her.  My granddog's biggest problem is boredom & lack of attention.

Lots of hoops for you to through, educating others on the fact that this is not a PET but a working dog whose whole live is You and your welfare. Sort of a Velcro dog that is at your side 24/7.   You will become conjoined twins.

Free Paws. com has all the laws involved under the ADA tell you your rights and obligations to have a service dog, bone up on the Federal Laws and don't be afraid to speak your piece when the need comes.

Darn near got my head ripped off by this obese woman and 3 perhaps year old child in a Doctors waiting room, woman came in with her seeing eye dog.  Dog found her an empty seat.   This child from hell came roaring over yelling dogie, dogie, Like she had never seen a dog before. I was seated perhaps 6 seats from the woman and dog, and the child threw itself on the dog, I got up and removed the child and told her this was not a dog to play with.    The huge mother bear got up and demanded to know what right I had pulling her child off the dog.

The blind woman had little idea what was going on and sat frozen in her seat.   The child was pitching a full out fit as the terrable 3's do and the woman was called next---thank heaven.

Not the child's fault, the fault of the mother that had no idea of the concept of a service dog, these are not pets these dogs work 24/7, they are as vital as crutches, wheelchairs and oxygen tanks of those with Copd.

Educate others on the need you have for Black Velvet, educate others on the need Velvet has for a job in her life time.     BTW, I just looked to see a bottle of Black Velvet in the cabinet and will when I take a drink will think of you and your wonderful new life together.

UPDATE: I completed the Army approval process. IHDI plans to send Velvet and the trainer here the first part of February, but I asked them to come sooner because I have TDY in February. The signs are up around my building and my office, and I already have people poking their head into my office to see "our dog".

UPDATE 2: A friend offered me a different Hearing Dog if I want to take immediate possession:

I'm conflicted. It looks like the old girl may need a hearing dog of her own!
