Hate to pont this out, but....losses could get close to the trillion here

So far three people killed...which is exceptional, but the economic losses are quickly reaching worst case scenario.

You people in the middle of this stay safe.

3. Yes, models of storms like this lead to much higher numbers of casualties

So far plans to reduce casualties are working.

11. Why I pointed both.

Sorry, as a former emergency responder we think on both spheres... I guess holding two thoughts is tacky.

Oh wait, didn't the President of the United States mention his concern or the economy this morning? Tacky I guess.

In fact he'd never want to give it to NYC, too many liberals

Like not wanting to give a bunch of liberals money is a bad thing.

I may not lock my doors while sitting at a red light and a black man is near, but I sure as hell grab on tight to my wallet when any democrats are close by.

Nada is wrong it's getting close to a bazillion dollars.

Flood damage will be pretty high and cheating insurance claims will be even higher. Most credible people put this at $20 billion but if the Obama regime gets involved it could quickly spiral into the trillions like Nada said.

Twas almost my exact thought. I was thinking in the billions until the govt gets involved then yes it could easily escalate to trillions. :banghead:

It was a category 1 storm at best, Nads.  Just beacause you wanted a Katrina so Bam Bam could strut around and brag about how his response was better than Bush's to a compliant media doesn't mean you get one.  If by "plans to reduce casualties" you mean order the evacuation of the beach, then the authorities knew what to do without you being around.

Not that it's not a large sized storm, with allot of flooding and damage, but just how much is the MSM overstating the whole thing, just so Oblahma can ride in and save everyone?   :whatever:

The MSM is already pumping this up.

That's all it is.  I remember a similar size storm coming through in 1999.  My CO was worried about potential damage to the communications equipment as I tried to explain to her that the storm (large, but highly disorganized) was unlikely to affect our mission.  She was from Colorado and had never been in a hurricane.  I finally mounted a remote anemometer to the roof just so she thought her rear was covered in the event of damage.  The storm was never any serious threat.

My father was from Highlands, as are several relatives. One of which still owns a bungalow there that's on the national registry. It's a Sears house and if it's still there, this won't have been the only hurricane it's been through.

Looks like the damage was pretty bad. Iv'e eaten many times at Bahrs Landing (in link).

Insurance carriers carry insurance for natural disasters.  They are reimbursed through firms like Lloyds of London etc. after a certain threshold $$ amount of claims are paid for each disaster.

Prior to katrina the Posse Comitatus Act did not cover State national Guards or the Coast Guards. It only covered the Army and Air Force. If States wanted federal assistance in a state of emergency they had to formally request it.

Quote
In 2006, the Congress modified the Insurrection Act as part of the 2007 Defense Authorization Bill (repealed as of 2008).
On September 26, 2006, President Bush urged Congress to consider revising federal laws so that U.S. armed forces could restore public order and enforce laws in the aftermath of a natural disaster, terrorist attack or incident, or other condition.
These changes were included in the John Warner National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2007 (H.R. 5122), which was signed into law on October 17, 2006.

Section 1076 is titled "Use of the Armed Forces in major public emergencies." It provided that:

The President may employ the armed forces... to... restore public order and enforce the laws of the United States when, as a result of a natural disaster, epidemic, or other serious public health emergency, terrorist attack or incident, or other condition... the President determines that... domestic violence has occurred to such an extent that the constituted authorities of the State or possession are incapable of maintaining public order... or [to] suppress, in a State, any insurrection, domestic violence, unlawful combination, or conspiracy if such... a condition... so hinders the execution of the laws... that any part or class of its people is deprived of a right, privilege, immunity, or protection named in the Constitution and secured by law... or opposes or obstructs the execution of the laws of the United States or impedes the course of justice under those laws.[9]

Haley Barbour activated the Miss. Guard on August 26

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_government_response_to_Hurricane_Katrina#U.S._National_Guard
Shortly before midnight on Friday, September 2, the Bush administration sent Governor Blanco a request to take over command of law enforcement under the Insurrection Act (one of the exceptions to the Posse Comitatus Act), but this request was rejected by Blanco.[62] Governor Haley Barbour of Mississippi also rejected a similar request.

Governor Blanco did make a request to the Federal government for additional National Guard troops (to be under her command) to supplement the 5,700 Louisiana National Guard troops available in Louisiana at the time.[63] However, the necessary formal request through the federal National Guard Bureau was not made until Wednesday, a full two days after the hurricane hit and when much of the city was already under water; Blanco explained that she didn't understand specific types and numbers of troops needed to be requested.
