Let's say everyone chose not to sacrifice themselves to fit in. How would a cohesive society be maintained? There has to be some kind of legal and social system to a given society. Why is who you are truly always good enough? Why can't one always choose to be better and make improvement to onesself? For example, I have major hesitation when I speak in real life. I have a major stutter. USA4ME reccomended a place for me to go for my aspergers. If they could improve my speech to reduce my hesitation and help make my speech clearer why wouldn't I do this?
When you say to love yourself unconditionally and to be whom you are meant to be, I ask what does this mean?
[link removed by franksolich; link to nambla] These guys are following your advice and loving themselves unconditionally and being whom they are meant to be. This is what they claim.
If this was so then by this standard how would the American Revolution come about? How would we have had MLKJr and how would we have the civil rights movement? The people in the civil rights movement were fed up with certain conditions and sought and fought to improve them. To me, they weren't grateful, they fought for their rights.
How does our universe show any emotional whatsoever? I did not know ou universe was a sentient being. How is it possible for a universe to show love? How is it possible for one to accomplish anything? Can one become the Alpha and Omega, the God of Abraham and Issac, and the God of the holy bible? How is it possible for one not to have limits? Can you imagine yourself walking through a wall? Can you defy gravity just by your beliefs and thoughts? Can you sprout wings and fly just with your beliefs? Can you imagine yourself to be the president of the USA? Let's say you did this and went up to the white house gates and claimed you were the president of the USA and believed this. Do you think the secret service will let you in?
I will give a less prospertous example. There are a set amount of teams with a set amount of players on each team in the NFL. Can everyone get into the NFL and play for a team in the NFL? A lot of people sign up but I think we have a lot more who don't make it then those who do? If one truthfully did not have limits then why can't every single person be in the NFL both young and old?
I have no problems with this one and actually agree.
I do agree with this and have no problems.
To me, it depends and I have stated my issues in my proceeding questions and statements.
Being true to ones self has many meanings. We evolve in life, being true to ones self at 3 years old means we believe in Santa Clause and fight anyone that says he does not exist. As one ages the first thing one learns is Adults lie to us, no tooth fairy, and later on that one can trust a teacher or police officer or even members in ones family not to misstreat them.
It takes awhile to find out how to live in this world, what or what not to believe in. Through the years you will change your ideas many times, find you had held mistaken beliefs, or realise that past acts on your part were wrong.
Those that remain True to themselves are legion. People that find any excuse to cover up past acts or become raving moral crusaders trying to for their own gain convert others.
When one finds that with the pysco babble today that one must remain true to themselves gives permission for people to feel OK with and gain pride in, This is Me, others must accept me------a car thief, a pedophile, a abuser or out right sadist. ------ or a person of God, a tax payer, a loving child or parent.
Choices in life, unless a human is depraved and has no idea what they are doing, all have choices.
BTW did you know that people who have a stutter somehow can sing with out it. YUP, this was brought to my attention when a member of my Church Choir first wanted to sing. The man who could not speak in a full sentence without getting all discombobulated wanted to sing. This man had a deep voice and when he sang it knocked our socks off. Every word rang out clear as a bell, what a voice that he could not use unless he was singing.
Life is odd, keep looking for answers and realise that being true to ones self will change as you, your self change, grow and become a part of Gods plan.
