I thought all churches did something like that. Our church has a food cupboard. We have a fund to help with necessary expenses as well, like someone about to lose their electricity. We don't ask people about their religious or political beliefs because we don't care. Churches have been about loaves and fishes forever but the moral guidelines in the "thou shalt not's matter. It's those values that influence our giving. It's easy for a person to give when the government takes the money from you before you see it. There's no free will, no compassion, no sense of doing something for someone other than yourself.
There was a time when this was common practice. Neighbors helped neighbors. You knew them, they mattered to you personally. Those giving to their neighbors in need didn't have to fill out ridiculous tax forms, deal with the IRS or be constantly harped at by liberals, democrats & other assorted loser who insisted you weren't doing enough. You needed food? Neighbors brought food, invited you for dinner, cooked extra food, hired you to do work for them. Family was always there to help.
When the feds got involved, the closeness dissolved. It's not enough to say "well, people are more spread out now." They still live in neighborhoods, apartment buildings, trailer parks. If the government wasn't there to depersonalize everything, neighbors would get to know each other. People help people they know. It's human nature. But DUmmies want to take the easy way out...they don't have to think about helping, put forth the effort that shows true, heartfelt compassion. It isn't in their nature to care. It IS in their nature to spout pretty words so they can pretend they do.
