I've taken deer with my Chinese milsurp SKS (Which I sporterized a good bit), it shoots the same round as the AK. Just because something CAN take a 30-rounder doesn't mean you have to USE 30 rounds at a time, it's a violation of most state game laws to have more than a 5 or 10 rounder in it anyway if you're hunting.
And what BSS said is correct. The 7.62X39 is just a mid-power .30 cal round, very roughly on a par with a .30-30 in terms of ballistics.
I might add that "Target shooting" takes in a lot more territory than microscopically-thorough benchrest shooters, which is what comes to the mind of the average journalist (Such as it is) when they start going off on this, it encompasses activities like Knob Creek, shoothouses, cowboy shooters with their lame handloads, and ripping off magazine a bump-fire in your backyard (If you live outside town limits like me).
