The best pick among the people that have a legitimate chance is either Portman or Jindal.
Portman is boring as all get out plus his ties to Bush as budget director make him a huge liability. Romney need someone to bolster his stuffy persona and Rubio or West could do that. Many independents vote on personalty rather than policy. That was one of the reason's McCain lost because he does not have a sparkling personalty. Just the opposite of Obama.
I live in Louisiana so I am quite familiar with Gov. Jindal; plus, I retired from the state several years ago as an auditor. FYI, he is NOT a fiscal conservative. When he was sworn in his first term, he made a deal with the legislature, that in return for his ethics legislation, he would double their salaries. LA already has the second highest in the South right behind FL. In LA, a bill that is passed becomes law if it is not vetoed in so many days. Voters got wind of this and raised so much hell, he decided to veto it. Jindal has added thousands of high paying jobs bloating the hell out of the budget. State employee numbers have decreased over the last couple of years while labor costs have went up $650 million. LA has many appointed officials appointed by the Governor making $200k to $500k. The legislative auditor found that 22% of supervisors had one (1) employee to supervise. The division I worked in had a Director and two Asst. Directors . BTW, wages of state employees have been frozen but not those for the Governor's office and appointed officials.
The new budget is a farce because Jindal will take a hatchet to education and Health and Human Services. Additionally, the legislative budget director states that Jindal is using some fuzzy math to balance the budget. Another thing that has never happened is that the state will use several hundred million of the rainy day fund to balance the budget. The State Treasurer, John Kennedy, also has harsh words for the governor because between the legislature and the Governor, they have been on an outrageous spending spree for the last several years.
Jindal has done a few good things but thank God he can not run for a third term in LA.
