‘Plus-Size Friendly’ Gym Bans Skinny People

A Canadian gym has banned slim gym rats -- and it's not the only one to do so.

As anybody with a gym ID mouldering in their wallet, purse or glove compartment can tell you, there are a lot of obstacles to going to the gym regularly. There’s just not enough time in the day. Gyms are just too expensive. There’s that Real Housewives marathon on Bravo. And then there’s one of the hardest reasons to admit: what if your gym just has too many skinny, healthy people in it?

I thought I would join a gym once. But I was not welcome. It was a club for beautiful people only.
never darkened such a door since.

I support this move.

I do also as long as the skinny people gym is allowed to kick out the fat people.

This is the stupidest damn thing I've ever seen. Plenty of the people that they would kick out got where they are after a lot of hard work and losing weight from the ideal they want in there. Those folks many times serve as an inspiration to others on the same journey. We are to ban those that went before us now because it makes us bad that they already did it?  :???: WTF..really...WTF

BTW, the picture is probably what that gym looks like on any given day since all the people who no longer need the motivation aren't allowed to grace its doors..cricketsville

Gyms are not just to loose weight.  People go to tone up, swim and exercise to stay healthy.

If you wished to loose weight, go to a gym and meet people that had been coming there for a few years and still are trying to loose weight------Grab your wallet and run.

These so called fitness experts are a joke, at least the ones I have seen.    Go in at a healthy weight, explain to them you want to tone your body, learn stretching exercises, and increase stamina and the trainers are at a loss.  They seldom know how to handle people that are not over weight.

Crap a membership at the YMCA is very inexpensive, and they have more programs then the private clubs.

No shit. I'm one of those. I'm maintaing my weight at this point. I go for the motivation, camaraderie, and just keep myself in good health. Personally, I take my membership down during the moderate months since I prefer outdoor activities then.

 :thatsright:
Oh horseshit! Even the instructors and trainers at the gym have small fluctuations in weight. They are human. So do all the people who go there regularly. Sometimes life dictates that we can't devote as much time to our physical activity in the way that would require us to maintain tone and ultimately our weight. It's not indicative that a gym sucks. It's just the reality of the human condition as it is in our day and age of many distractions.

Bullshit...total bullshit and not even worthy of a reply. Perhaps you are just so damn disagreeable and know it all so much they couldn't wait to get your ass out the door and faked stupidity.
Now if you wanted to say that they all pretty much expound on the same tried and true methods then I would agree. They essentially are and should be teaching the same thing, but sometimes in different ways. And clicking with a trainer personally or liking a style of instruction are essential to success as is the level of dedication to doing the exercises that one is given to reach the results. If you see  a training 2 hours a week; they have no control over the other 5 you are supposed to be doing your training in or how you feed yourself. Contrary to skinny people thought, they too need to eat appropriately to gain the desired results.

That said, I don't know a single trainer or instructor(and I know several and almost taught too prior to going back to work full time) who do not know how to teach toning. They actually usually have a problem convincing people that they need to tone or rather weight train in order to get the most ideal results in conjunction with weight loss. Even skinny people come in saying they need to lose weight instead of understanding that they need to tone to get the look they want.

BS again. It really depends on the private club and group fitness classes at the Y are often associated with more fees which if done regularly has to be taken in consideration as to the overall cost. A gym that is inclusive of things like tanning, group fitness, cycling might actually be more reasonable for the regular user.

Agreed.  At what point is a person no longer "plus sized."  Do they lose their membership when they only have 25 pounds left to go?

There have been days when I have felt like the "fat girl" at the gym, but I have never heard any nasty comments or snide remarks.  I focus on my workout, and so does everybody else.  It can be embarrassing, but I keep going because I intend to be one of those hot girls on the treadmill one day.  People can live with watching my fat butt run on a treadmill until then.

Also, there is something about being around people who are slimmer that is inspirational when you are trying to lose weight.  There is undoubtedly a former heavy person among those slim people working out, but you can't tell anymore.

Private business should be able to allow or deny customers as they see fit - based on the desires of the shareholders / owners of the company.
