Hey Movie Buff!
« on: June 11, 2012, 10:35:04 AM »
Remember when I told you I unpacked a coupla never-seen MST3K DVDs?  I wanted to wait to watch them when I had the house to myself, as this is "my" kind of humor.

So, husband calls me on Sat nite, he's out with friends, and he's decided to spend the night at a buddy's house.  I say, "fine, have fun."   :yahoo: :cheersmate:  I ensconsed myself with plenty of bev and popcorn, and popped in....."Santa Claus Conquers the Martians!"

I laughed from start to finish, and had a great time.  The one thing that kept running through my mind was, "how can grown men don these costumes, with those helmets with the goofy bee antennas and vacuum cleaner hoses attached to the side, with a cape for the top dude, and then look at themselves in the mirror the next day?"   :lmao:   Especially the top dude, with his frowny lines between the eyebrows, acting all serious.   :rotf:

I was particularly frightened when Santa Claus makes the Martian children all of a sudden erupt in maniacal laughter, with seemingly no input or cause.  It looked like a loony bin, through and through, populated with children.  Crazy stuff!

Hooray for Santy Claus!  And watch out for snakes!

I saw that one! I remember how these two low-level scientists, out of nowhere, just come to the conclusion that "of course it's a rip in the fabric of spacetime!" caused by a black hole that's letting these spiders in. Sure, I'd always conclude that right away!  First thing that comes to my mind.

Then there were all the MN vs WI jokes.....

You know what?  They didn't.  My bad.  One of my favorite lines from MST3K is when they scream "Soylent Green is people!"  That prompted me to watch the original movie.

I am squarely in the Mike camp.

One of my favorite ones, I can't even remember the name.  It's from the early 80's, in space.  The captain looks like Santa Claus, and his daughter looks like a middle-aged aerobics instructor.  Oh, there's so many awful ones it's hard to pick a fave.  The spider one with The Skipper was a good one.  Is that the one with the trashy dame who's got the shakes?

Great to hear you liked it, Karin!
That was one of my favorites.
The space one whose name you can't remember in which the ship's captain looks like Santa Claus was called 'Space Mutiny.' That, too, is one of my favorites (It's the first of the Syfy ones I saw, and one of the few in which literally every character is pretty much begging to be riffed).
As for my thoughts on the Joel vs. Mike debate, I believe I said in one of my reviews that I think Joel was slightly better at doing host segments, whereas Mike was a slightly better riffer, though I of course think they're both great in general.
btw, Karin, as long as I have your attention, did you read the thread I posted a while back about possibly doing a mini- series of reviews of the 'Spider- Man' and 'Batman' films next month? What would you think of that (I ask because you seemed to be the biggest fan of my movie reviews)?

:hammer:  You're almost one week late to this party.  Couldn't decide what to wear?   :-)

Thanks for the title.

I'm not a huge devotee of superhero movies, except I did like Spider Man, and Iron Man.  I'm one of the few people who just could not get into Dark Knight.  Everything looked so dark on my TV, I couldn't see what the hell was going on.  So, while I'd probably read the review, I don't know as I'd comment.  You could throw one up and see if it sticks.

And it was filmed in Wisconsin. And probably answers the question as to why Wisconsin doesn't have a thriving film industry.  Too many giant spiders wrecking the sets and getting in the shots.

My favorite one is Earth Vs. The Giant Spider where Crow writes Earth Vs. Soup. Which I want to see made into a major motion picture one day.
