Animals that are cared for are considered Property in most states.   You get a hawk catching your free rage chickens that you feed and depend on for food and eggs, no question asked the Hawk has to GO.

Cats are also property if fed and given Vet care, so are small 6 pound dogs,  they depend on you to keep them as safe as you can.

In some States it is illegal to shoot a Bear, catch one of them going after a calf or Foll and they be gone also.

Darn, were this Hawk to get a shining to your brand new car and decide to eat the paint or peck holes in it, perhaps get aggressive with the kids playing out side----Hawk be gone.

This is so stupid, Humans rights come before the rights of aggressive animals, and when a wild bird or animal acts out they may be sick with any number of diseases that can effect your family.  One has the right to protect their Property, from all threats.

We "dispatch" groundhogs with regularity around here, and I used my 9mm to off a raccoon last week.  I know enough about 'coons to know if you see one wandering in your field at 3 PM, it's either sick or injured.  I didn't bother to ask him which it was.

Across the river in Maine there is Turkey Trouble, Toms I believe that refuse to let people out of their house and even trapped a cop in his cruiser.   Residence can't just shoot the sucker due to fire arm ordnance etc.

Geese, ganders are better watch dogs then real dogs and as scary as a charging pit bull.   Had a time or two as a kid being attacked and they are faster then my little legs were.

Those Canadian geese are nasty buggers, they come in big group's and can destroy your yard in just a few days, I gave Mom a small air horn to toot at them, seemed to work very well.

Air horns work great on other varmints also, they run off skunks, possems, raccoons, fox  and deer in the garden.   I refuse to kill anything I do not intend to eat or skin, the air horn is a good way to get rid of unwanted critters bloodlessly.

I would take the fall for violating a noise ordinance before I would face a felony fire arms charge.

About 18 years ago, we had an outbreak of raccoon rabies in upstate NY.  The damned things were showing up all over the place, and not in a good way.  An acquaintance of mine who was (maybe he still is) a cop in a city north of where I am now (Saratoga Springs), had to shoot one with his duty handgun--a S&W .45 ACP loaded with Federal 230-grain Hydra-Shoks.  He said that they tear the things apart.  One shot.

The hawk is protecting her nest. We have hawks everywhere, and a resident pair of caracaras with 3 babies this year.  They hang around the horses and catch the little critters that run away from 'em. They've don't pay any attention to my Maltese, but the dogs don't go near their nesting area either.

people who boldly boast that they are on the side of evil and the death of species really need to get a conscience but reality is that evil people don't turn to the side of good much after age 13 or so

too many people are happy to destroy species and the planet for their own convenience but i wish more of them had enough conscience to at least not boast about it

This has nothing to do with good versus evil. This has to do with protecting a beloved part of your family. Unfortunately the animal(villian, if you will) is this case, happens to be an endangered species. I am a big advocate for animals, especially endangered ones, but my cat means a  lot to me and the hawk is going down. However, I do take responsibility in making sure , she stays an indoor cat, so she nor another animal will get hurt....

Hawks and owls, for political reasons, I guess, are protected species just like songbirds, they are not endangered.

There are a few species that are classified as "endangered", but they are pretty rare and very unlikely to be involved in eating your cat.

The predatory hawks and owls that cause problems with domestic animals and fowl are no more endangered than robins.

I wonder how you would handle this problem, sitting on your porch watching your Kitty's at play laughing at their antics, out of the blue from the sky sudden death to one of them.

Damn this hawk is so fast it's grabs the cat and flys off before you can get out of your chair.   Damn nation, next day you notice the hawk hanging out keeping an eye out for its next meal. 

Choices you have are:

Go to town and buy a shot gun, visit local sheriff and get instructions and some practice in on how to use if safely, come home and blow the sucker away before it gets another meal.

Try to get wild life photos of the bird as it carries off another pet.  Place warning posters about the area of the hawk as a killer, Farmers LOCK up the barn cats.

Attempt to gather up the remaining cats and lock them in the house much to their distress.

Join the Audubon Society and become an avid bird watcher.

I have a barn full of mice. My kitties keep them from overpopulating my property. Wouldn't bother me much if a hawk came after them as I'm pretty sure the hawk would be damned sorry they got a hold of one of them.

These cats are bad ass, and birds are a favorite prey. I discourage them however with my BB gun! They still grab one once in a while, but, that's how nature works. I'm thinkin' the tom might actually bait a Red Tail, and the eagles won't bother. Too much work for some pretty tuff meat! They're all around 10 years old.

On our dairy farm, we had several cats.  One in particular was a solid black tom named "Roscoe".  Roscoe was BAD ASS!  He even kept the DOGS in line. 

After we finished milking the cows, we would pour the unfiltered milk left in the pipeline (about a gallon) out for the dogs and cats to drink.  One day, one of our border collie pups (about 12 weeks old) joined in the feeding, and ran all the cats off so he could have the milk to himself.  Roscoe smacked the dog in the head so hard, I heard the 'thud', he cut the end of the dog's nose open, then sat down on the porch near the dish and let the other cats return.  Roscoe didn't even lay his ears back, just walked up to the dog and "SMACK".

He never bothered any of the dogs that drank with the cats, so long as they weren't growling and snapping at them, like this pup did.

From that day on, whenever the pup approached the bowl, all Roscoe had to do was get up and stretch, the pup would leave!
