I'm calling for a new federal bill that would give the President the power to set gasoline prices

I mean, since the Republicans keep saying Obama is responsible for high gas prices, why don't we codify it and make him actually responsible for gas prices? The law would be very simple:
"Gasoline prices in the United States will be set at the sole discretion of the President, with no oversight from anybody."

So then the President could actually guarantee that gasoline would cost $2.50 a gallon, or 3 cents a gallon, or 15 dollars a gallon -- whatever he feels like. Simple.

The discussions of such a proposal in Congress and the media could be most enlightening. We might even see some reporting about the real reasons for high gasoline prices.

I know, I know -- but I can dream, can't I?

No matter how hard you try to spin it, 0bama gets the blame for gas prices, it is his energy department that is trying their best to kill the oil industry.

I may not lock my doors while sitting at a red light and a black man is near, but I sure as hell grab on tight to my wallet when any democrats are close by.

If he set the price too low, companies would leave the business or just start selling gas on the black market while not delivering to the gas stations.

Shh.  Don't confuse the primitive with logic.  It thinks that it made a good point.  This is obviously an unterprimitiven and needs time to develop if it ever hopes to reach nadin-level stupidity.  Confusing it at this point could stunt its "growth".

Price controls. Central economic planning. Libs think they come up with original ideas that are in reality total failures.

Yup.  Actually they are communists in the Stalinist mold: they want a big daddy to have all the power to control business, industry, education, health care and anything else that should be kept private.  Of course, what the DUmmies don't remember is that the big totalitarian daddy can then kill millions and millions of people and dump political prisoners in gulags.

The DUchebags will be sorely disappointed if 0bama sets the price. He has stated $5 gas is OK but would prefer the price of $10 that europe suffers under.

Yes very true.

Reading the DUmmie's post I am taken back in my memories of long ago political discussions. Myself and a group of friends would gather together and offer solutions to all societies problems. I remember we came up with the exact same solution to gas prices as DUmmie Klook. This was the 1970's and my friends and I were IN THE 7TH GRADE!

I think most on the left are more child-like than rabid communist. They can't see the big picture and become useful idiots.

Yup, and as they get closer to having that dream dashed for a generation, they'll get louder and louder, and push harder and harder.  It's going to be an interesting next few months. :fuelfire:

The only way this 'works' (in quotes because it really won't in the end) is through complete government takeover of oil production in the USA. The prices won't be lower in the end, but they will be set by the White House.

Its an absolutely stupid idea, which means libs will love it. - until conservatives are in charge and they raise prices or redirect profits to pay for things liberals dislike.

So, what you're saying is that Obama is not responsible for the price of gas? This means that Bush was also not responsible for the price of gas. If Obama has nothing to do with it, then neither did Bush. If Bush was responsible, then so is Obama. You can't have it both ways, no matter how hard you try.

However, Obama has affected the price of gas (just a few):

1. Drilling moratorium that had been deemed illegal, yet was ignored anyway.
2. The killing of the Keystone pipeline deal
3. Going after coal manufacturers, who he said he wanted to drive out of business during the campaign.

Bush has as well:

1. Bush lifts offshore drilling moratorium in 2007. The gas prices went from 4, 5, 6 dollars a gallon to < $2.00 in a matter of weeks, and remained that was until Obama took office.

So yeah, Obama is responsible for these high prices because he has stifled the free market. And price controls is a disaster waiting to happen. It has never worked, and it never will work.

No blood for oil but they want to give the power to set prices to the President. When the oil companies start to lose money how much of a bail out are we going to pay for then?

Not surprising. Back in 2006, dems all thought that the president had lots to do with gas prices.

The DUmmie's idea would certainly produce some very campaign-worthy pictures of long lines at the gas pump, waiting to receive their authorized 10 gallons at the State-approved price.

President Nixon Imposes Wage and price controls

August 15, 1971.  In a move widely applauded by the public and a fair number of (but by no means all) economists, President Nixon imposed wage and price controls.  The 90 day freeze was unprecedented in peacetime, but such drastic measures were thought necessary.  Inflation had been raging, exceeding 6% briefly in 1970 and persisting above 4% in 1971.  By the prevailing historical standards, such inflation rates were thought to be completely intolerable.

The 90 day freeze turned into nearly 1,000 days of measures known as Phases One, Two, Three, and Four.  The initial attempt to dampen inflation by calming inflationary expectations was a monumental failure.

Quote
While there were skeptics in August, 1971, there were a great many who thought "temporary" wage and price controls could cure inflation.  By 1974, this notion was thoroughly discredited, and attention gradually turned toward a monetary approach to inflation.  In a complete reversal, the policy to curb inflation in now thought to be an increase in interest rates rather than an attempt to hold them down.
