Lost My Job

I worked for a for-profit University for six years.

I just got let go for a reason so ridiculous I still don't believe it, let alone would I think anyone else would believe it.

I'm still in shock.

I also found out today that apparently they "advance" vacation time and that it is not technically "earned" until the end of that year so I am getting charged for it. This means my last paycheck will be technically for 1.83 hours of pay.

I am so shocked by that I can't believe I even have the ability to type those words out.

I was a top performer.

Awards out the rear.

Sent for special trainings all over the country.

Designed and implemented my own trainings for co-workers at my campus and other campuses.

I've been through the advancement training program for managers.

I have family that still work there.

We all have degrees from this place.

We as a family have so much invested in this place.

I cannot believe I was tossed aside in the manner that I was.

I have filed for unemployment, something that I have never done in my life.

And boy have I learned REAL quick how that works...

I just can't believe it.

I have applied to over 40 different places in the last 4-5 days. I've handed my resume to places in person.

Reaching out to family will be no help because none of my family live in the same state.

I can't relocate because I'm going through a divorce and have 3 kids.

I don't even know what to say at this point.

I could go on a long-winded tangent about how corporations have engineered this country into an indentured servant state, but these are all things that everyone here is aware of already. Until now I've just been witness to it, just not first-hand... until now.

If anybody has any ideas, feedback, or anything like that please feel free to let me know. I'm tearing through the job sites, contacting old colleagues, and anything else that comes to mind I'm throwing myself into full force.
I just need to know that I'm not totally ****ed, or my children.

That's about all I have to say I guess. Just needed to vent more than anything I suppose, and maybe a little part of me was hoping that there was some secret answer or trick to all of this.

I guess that's all.

To repeat from 1992, "it's the economy, stupid."

You voted for it.

Live with it.

1. Try not to take it personally (hard, I know) and don't feel bad about taking unemployment comp...

... you earned that while you were working.

2. thank you very much for the words of encouragement.

i'm trying not to take it personally, but my firing was TOTALLY personal.

i do feel bad about taking unemployment but i will if only to make sure my bills get paid and that my kids are taken care of.

thank you for putting unemployment comp into perspective.

3. Woah!

I wish I had wonderful advice, but right now all I can say is that that seems truly unjust. I believe there will be a better opportunity waiting for you - but ugh! I'll come back when I think of something better to say, but I just wanted to let you know - I read every word of your post and that's just not right. I'm so sorry you're going through this.

4. Focus on what you have to offer your new employer

Depending on what you do, and what you're applying for. Most private sector jobs want to know what you have to offer, and unfortunately do not usually care about anyone's record of accomplishment. After I got my Master's degree, I found that simply describing what I did came off as arrogant to others. I know it's counter-intuitive, and it made me very angry for years, but that's how it works, unfortunately. Look to the future, not the past. What skills do you have that nobody else has, and can it make the business money? That's all they care about.

I do not know much about university jobs. If you apply at a university again, I supposed your record of accomplishment would be more important. I've heard politics are tough in education.

You know, one feels for the DaveJ primitive, who's been trying for the longest time to get primitives to come to the jobs forum on Skins's island, but the primitives avoid it like the plague.

It's tragic, and I hate to see anyone lose their job.

Except for a DUmpmonkey.

I hope he starves.

For-profit University?   Say what?

Fly-bye-night TeeVee University that is being sued by the AG of several states.

That's my guess and I'm sticking to it.

This is a fact needs to be repeated often.  I said the very same thing recently at the gas pump to a loser with an "Obama 2012 sticker" and no this is not a bouncy.

Diploma mills that advertise on TV and matchbook covers.

Non-transferable credits, cost a fortune and command zero respect, but you can go to class in your pajamas.

Think about how stupid the primitives have to be that someone feels compelled to remind them businesses are out to make money.

Is it me, or am I the only one who fails to see a corporate tie to this college?

Could it be DUmmie, that you started bein' a slacker because you thought you had it, "made in the shade"?

I've worked for quite a few companies, that happens if your a construction super if ya wanna keep workin', and I have never seen anyone get laid off if they were some super duper performer.

I'm curious Banned, why did the DUmp get rid of ya? Didn't agree with their socialist utopia over there?

Ya mean you don't blame the evil corporations for whoever this poor soul is? Or was it a mole that got caught, 'cause ya couldn't stand it any more? Hhahahahaha!! I've lost a few that way!

As Frank would say, I'm sure there is much more to the story.

Maybe those afternoon margis are kicking in but the OP sounds almost reasonable. What could have happened that took a former hig performer out?
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

This is not so unusual. Every company I work for had a policy like this. Its EXPLINED to all new employees.

You sound like a guy who's worked there for a year or less. no awards. still learning the job. You couldn't get vacation when you wanted, so you called in sick for two weeks. Lo and behold, they were ready for you when you showed up.

Most companies like this will make allowances for employees who work with them on a vacation. Honeymoons and stuff can be worked out. Only an ass who acts like an ass is treated like you were.

The company got off easy. They weren't forced to pay you for not working...and they dumped you before you used them for the disability gravy train. Companies can see a bad apple from a long ways off.

Once again, DUmmies don't want to work. They just want free stuff. You DESERVED to be fired!

Oh, and I don't believe you when you said your family works there. Liar, liar, pants on fire.
