New Jersey Rep. Donald Payne Has Died

I never heard of him, but it sounds like he was involved in the Darfur humanitarian crisis.  RIP.

New Jersey Rep. Donald Payne Has Died

Rep. Donald Payne, the long-term congressman from New Jersey, died on Tuesday of complications with colon cancer. He was 77.

Payne, New Jersey’s first African-American congressman and a past chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 12 terms. He was a member of House committees on education and foreign affairs, as well as the most recent chair of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation.

“His top-priorities remained closing the achievement gap, providing equitable funding for public schools and making college and healthcare more affordable,” his office said in a statement on Tuesday.

As the former chairman of the House Subcommittee on Africa and Global Health, Payne was also among Congress’ most vocal members on the humanitarian crisis in Sudan’s Darfur region, pushing President Obama to take bolder action with the Sudanese government to end the conflict. In his role as subcommittee chairman, he traveled to Africa many times on foreign affairs issues. As the Associated Press reports:

I don't know anything about this congressman, other than he was 77 years old and he served 12 f'n terms in the House, and he died of cancer.

Let's look at this again:

The man was 77 years old.

He served 12 TERMS in Congress. That's 24 YEARS.

I am beginning to really, truly, absolutely, and completely despise career politicians.  :argh:

Why did this man choose to serve FAR beyond a normal retirement age? Power, pure and simple. It's all about power.

This guy might've been the world's best great-grandfather, but as far as I'm concerned he wore out his welcome six terms ago. I guess it's a good thing I don't live in NJ, eh?

I favor term limits, myself.  Still, I bet his family misses him.  They have my sympathy.
