The wind-power lobby is spinning the facts in a $1.4-million TV ad campaign aimed at extending a lucrative tax break worth billions to the industry.

Its ads claim that Congress is “threatening new taxes” targeting wind power, which isn’t true. No “new taxes” are envisioned. Instead, Congress is considering whether or not to renew an existing $1.3-billion-a-year tax break that expires at the end of 2012.

The industry is also claiming that wind energy is “on track” to support half a million new jobs within 20 years. Maybe so. But those jobs “would displace jobs and economic activity elsewhere,” according to the very study cited by the wind lobby.

The debate over the tax break couldn’t be coming at a worse time for the wind-power industry. Falling natural gas prices are already bringing stiff competition from gas-fired electric plants, making some wind-power projects economically uncompetitive even with the advantage of a tax subsidy.

I am all for green, but this as to be taken as good vs bad. Locally it's not good for eagles and other raptors.

Of course I am dreaming, but if I had my own home, not an apartment...I would already have solar.

I wonder if she's referring to water turbines.  There were some installed in UK waters recently, or are in the works (approximately 1 MW, I think).  They don't have rich Kennedys around to bitch about their view being ruined.  And those same bird-strike stories are being repeated by liberal environmental groups like Greenpeace and ELF.

--Wind power capacity in the United States. (Appx. 40,000 MW as of 2010.)
--Wind power GENERATED in the United States. (Appx. 95TWh as of 2010.)
--Percentage of US electricity generated by wind. (2.3 percent.)
--And here's the kicker, the AVAILABILITY of wind power.  Work with me here, nads:

40000 MW X 24 hours/day X 365 days/year = 350,400,000 MWh, or 350.4 TWh, assuming you had 100 percent availability, but you don't.

95 / 350.4 = 27.1 percent availability.  Frankly, nads--THAT SUCKS.

Compare that to baseload generation such as nuclear or coal, with availability in the 90-plus percent range.

Again, wind power is far more expensive per KwH than nuclear, coal or gas.  Deal with it.

The only, and I mean ONLY (!) reason any alternative energy sources are built anywhere in this country can be summed up in two words:

Tax breaks.

Eliminate them, the expansion of wind and solar is dead.
