Putting in my vacation request...

For 12/21/12.  Under "Reason", I think I'll put down Armageddon, zombies, cats and dogs living together.

Anyone else?

Mrs. E and I put a deposit down on....you guessed it (and in light of recent developments in Italy)....

A cruise.   :thatsright:

Four nights out of Tampa leaving on 12/27/12, only one port - Cozumel. This time, it's Royal Caribbean.

If we survive, any future cruises will be scheduled at the last minute to take advantage of price reductions. Should've done that this time, but oh well. It's only money.....

The good thing about RC--they have their disaster briefings right away, before the ship sails.  They're good about that.  Methinks they will be a heluva lot better from now on.  (My wife and I have been on two RC cruises, a long time ago.  Stellar.)

I'm retiring this year anyway.  I can hunker in the bunker without having to check out at work first for this particular Armageddon iteration.

On our recent Carnival cruise, we boarded the ship at 1 p.m. and had our safety briefing at 3 p.m. IIRC, we had just cleared the port at the time of the briefing. But yeah, something tells me these safety briefings are gonna be held before the ship leaves the damned pier anymore.

I cruised in October and refused to attend the safety briefing. I was too drunk by then anyway. I tend to be a tad snarky when I'm drinking, so it was better for all other passengers that I not attend.

I got my vacation request back.  Unsigned.

Attached was a note from my department manager which read:

2006 here.

It's been a while.

My husband was going to go on a hunting trip next week but it's been cancelled. Apparently all the birds or ducks or what ever it was they they were going to hunt aren't there because of the weather (some where in Arkansas).

It gets better.  The department head made a copy and left it on my bosses' desk so HE could also "discuss" it with me.

Professionalism?  Really?  Is that all that gets their panties in a twist?

Also, I  have a wedding planned for that day.  So if the world ends as it's supposed to... it will be the best marriage I ever had.

What is this vacation thing people talk about?
If yours works like ours, its a thing in which you take off to go to a family reunion and plan to go on to Yellowstone from there...but 1/3 of the way to the reunion, your van breaks down.  You limp it to an exit, and call your brother-the-mechanic to find out the symptoms mean the transmission is gone (you were really hoping he'd say "fluid might fix it."  :bawl:).  You spend the night at a KOA, rent a van the next morning, and get to your family reunion one day late.

After camping out at the reunion for 3 nights, you decide to make do with 2 days and one night in the Black Hills instead of going all the way to Yellowstone.  On the way back, you pick up your brother-the-mechanic and go van shopping.  He helps you pick out a nice van with only 180,000 miles for $4000.  (Which, by the way, we're still driving 8 years later.  He's is really good at picking used vehicles.)

You return the rental van on the way home, and you don't go on another vacation for several years because the last one cost you $5500 more than you'd planned.   :rotf: :rotf:

The only drawback to vacations like this, aside from the hassle, expense, and frayed nerves, is that the kids still whine about not getting to Yellowstone!!!  :lmao:

Oh my gosh!   :rotf:

I took one very similar when the children were young.  Just add blowing an engine while going up the east side of the Big Horns, an exciting tow ride back down and getting one of the last motel rooms in town in time to watch the 4th of July fireworks from NYC on TV while eating fish and chips from the local fry shack.

They kids did like riding in the truck off the mountain, though.  I took photos of them and the driver with our station wagon on the bed.

We'll take our Rt.66 trip, but now we'll also have to visit Tucson. My sister lives there, anyway, but on 2/27 the wife of one of my cousins died at 90 yeares young.. Not sure when memorials are taking place, but another cousin said there are 40 people who already will go out there from the mid-west.
