Bill Gates Has Given Away $28 Billion Since 2007, Saving 6 Million Lives

"Neat infographic on Bill Gates from Frugal Dad. Since 2007 Gates has given away 48% of his net worth, or $28 billion, which has helped save 6 million lives. It takes a second for the graphic to load."

The graphic is worth looking at if you care about philanthropy.

15. Doesn't begin to justify his education reforms that have caused far more damage than good.

He's also attempting to buy our federal govt.

He's an out of control monster.

16. Not sure about that. 6 million lives is close to holocaust levels.

I abhor his education policies, but recognize that people are complex creatures. His work in Africa has been nothing short of incredible.

30. Seriously mixed feelings about this.

Of course I'm delighted that 474,000 people who might have otherwise died of whooping cough didn't, etc. (Let's just assume the methodology and reporting here is accurate.)

On the other hand, I have serious questions about an economic system that allows for the accumulation of Buffet/Gates/Waltons level wealth to begin with, when serious hardship for others, including external costs borne by all of society, are a consequence of this system. This concern doesn't even require facing the fact that a fair amount of Microsoft's "success" involved predatory, anti-competitive business practices.

I'm also bothered by the tax implications - the $28 billion in charity donated by Bill and Melinda Gates means maybe $10 or $12 billion denied to the public coffers. Maybe their foundation is spending every penny wisely, but this is a democracy (in theory, at least) and we shouldn't be too pleased with dictatorship, even if's benevolent. In other words, I'm not convinced all this money was justly earned, or rightfully Bill's, or not. And I think we the people should have a lot more say in how our nation's wealth is used.

She sure does make a grand fool of herself on this thread.   Did you catch the references to Steve Jobs in it as well?  Seems like the both Jobs and Gates are were in sync.  But then, what could two self made Billionaires know about education , Die alte is a trained professional, nicht whar?

Reason #32 why I can't be a liberal. I just can't muster up any self righteous rage over other people spending their own money as they wish.

They hate Gates because he threatens the protected incompetence and laziness of unionized schoolteachers.

Again, my point about the primitives being reactionaries.

Usually I've used the brain-damaged primitive as an example; he can't cope with change.

But the Die alte Sau's another good example; she wants things the remain the way they were in the old days, and is resistant to innovation, change, and refining education.  The wretched old bitch hates change; she can't deal with it.

I wonder if the DUmmies ever think about how much productivity increases, life's trials and tribulations are eased, etc., by the formation of Windows or any user-friendly PC operating system?  How many people owe their livelihood to a Windows or Mac product they use on a daily basis?

Nah, **** it.  Let 'em all try to communicate in COBOL.

Fixered.

I thank god every day for the great teachers I had growing up.

I just can't imagine what it would have been like to have a teacher as incompetent as P2B.

That 10 or 12 billion was much better used by going to charity than lining some politician's or union leader's pocket.

:p You actually made me shudder, when I was in school it was Fortran 77.

I remember having to toggle a PDP8  ( or maybe it was a 4 that was upgraded) to load the boot load paper tape on a cord ax measuring machine.  Calculators were just learning how to "divide" a feature which could run their cost upward of several hundred dollars.

But I digress.  DUmmies and the OWS crowd seem to miss the relevance of the order of the seven deadly sins:

Quote

the traditional order of the sins, with Pride (as the deadliest of the Seven Deadly) appearing first followed by Envy, Wrath, Sloth, Greed, Gluttony, and Lust

http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/news/2011/10/17/opinion-occupy-wall-street-greed-vs.html

Seems DUmmies are pretty strong on #'s 1&2.  (Which is not to say they don't embrace individually and collectively the other five as well.)

Pride, Envy, Wrath, Sloth, Greed, Gluttony, and Lust

I think that just about covers all the main planks in the democrat platform.
