I have Jury Duty.

I'm on a break until 2pm.  I missed out on the first pool for a rape case.  Judge ***** had everone stand and have a moment of silence for our troops in Iraq and Afganistan.  I thought that was nice of him.  He said wherther you agree with the war or not, you'd better acknowledge the sacrifice the troops are making.  He knows you'd rather be somewhere other than jury duty, but those soldiers had rather be somewhere else, too.  Put that in perspective.

With a judge like that, defense attorneys had best advise their clients to plead out.

And yeah, I agree with the judge.  Support the war or not, you'd best acknowledge those who are REALLY sacrificing.  Poor babies don't like giving up a day from work, I know a few folks who'd gladly trade you...

That's a really neat thing for the Judge to do.  I imagine there are a lot of defense attorneys that are annoyed by that.

I would LOVE to be on a jury!  I am not sure I could lie convincingly enough to have any defense attorney ever allow it though. :-)

If I had time, I would love to serve.  But even when I did have time, they popped me out on voir dioir.

After they got done with all of the people who had relatives either prosecuted by the D.A. or defended by the public defender, they didn't have much choice.  If the Defense Attorney knew anything about me, he would have ran out of the courtroom.

I've been called for jury duty.  Once it was only a month or so after I turned 18, so I was still in high school (jury duty isn't an "excused" absence and you're an auto-out just mail in the form).

The second time, I was in college and it was sent to my dad's house and I lived over and hour away and I forgot to go home and pick it up to call in and tell them I was a student.  So I just never showed up.  Oops. 

I haven't been called since.

Nationwide, judges are NOT putting up with people blowing off jury duty.  They are fining people and even locking them up for a day.

I think it might have something to do with the fact people are retiring so much older now.  It used to be that old people showed up for JD in much larger numbers.  But that is just a guess.

I'm actually excited about being on a jury.  It is part of you responsibility to serve, unless there is good reason why you can't.  The judge said he'd let you off if you had a child's birthday party to attend.  He's not that firm, but you'd better at least show up.

I keep hearing the DUNDUN from Law & Order while sitting in the courtroom.

Oh I know that they're cracking down on it.  I just really forgot to get that paper and mail it back in.  It would be kind of neat to sit on a jury, I wouldn't mind doing it.  :)

I have served on a jury twice.  Once for a civil law suit when I was living in CA. and one criminal case here in Ohio.

I enjoyed it both times.

"Well, I don't know. I might be."

"In 32 years of service in courtrooms, as a prosecutor, as a defense attorney and now as a judge, I have quite frankly never confronted such a brazen situation of an individual attempting to avoid juror service," Nickerson told Ellis, handing the case over to prosecutors for possible perjury and other charges.
