Yet another year of sending a christmas card to Poland

I have posted the story before, but every year, since I got married, I have sent a card to Poland, Originally it was to the man who saved my dad from the Nazis, true story. These days it is to her [sic] widow. Every year we put in a card in the mail with some money.

Those are true debts that can never be paid, But that is what the depth of human connections mean, when at the risk of one's live, one choses to save another human, in this case four of them.

While we all talk about reducing our Christmas giving, and all that, this is one I cannot do. I was going to make a check for a smaller amount. but in reality she is up there in age and this money is something she needs quite a bit. So did not. When my dad took us to Poland, we met her, and her husband. He was given an award as a hero among the Gentiles... and now, as we see the rise of something ugly, I wonder how the present generation will react now. But yes, we are entering one more of those nasty periods in world history... and that is that. Hearing the stories from my dad, the few he told us, near his death he told me a few more... and then hearing the stories of survivors of other wars, has made me realize just how easy is to manipulate people with well placed propaganda.

So the card goes off the day after tomorrow, I need to physically go to the post office since it needs quite a bit more of postage. And off it goes...

A debt none of us will ever be able to pay.

Okay, now we all agree it's important to express gratitude, which is what nadin's doing.

However, franksolich remains mystified about something else.

Why does this yenta persist in dishonoring, in shaming, in embarrassing, in humiliating, in disgracing, in parodying, the people and culture who gave her life, by being so stupid?

The Polish man saved her dad and deserves thanking.

US capitalism and the US military saved the world and deserves disdain.

“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

Not only that, but much of yenta's current affluence, such as it is (I have no idea what size of pension a retired submarine skipper would bring home, but I assume it's more than a couple of hundred a month), derives from the system she's trying to tear down.

The yenta doesn't understand a damned thing about how things work, and are paid for.
