Yet another year of sending a christmas card to Poland
I have posted the story before, but every year, since I got married, I have sent a card to Poland, Originally it was to the man who saved my dad from the Nazis, true story. These days it is to her [sic] widow. Every year we put in a card in the mail with some money.
Those are true debts that can never be paid, But that is what the depth of human connections mean, when at the risk of one's live, one choses to save another human, in this case four of them.
While we all talk about reducing our Christmas giving, and all that, this is one I cannot do. I was going to make a check for a smaller amount. but in reality she is up there in age and this money is something she needs quite a bit. So did not. When my dad took us to Poland, we met her, and her husband. He was given an award as a hero among the Gentiles... and now, as we see the rise of something ugly, I wonder how the present generation will react now. But yes, we are entering one more of those nasty periods in world history... and that is that. Hearing the stories from my dad, the few he told us, near his death he told me a few more... and then hearing the stories of survivors of other wars, has made me realize just how easy is to manipulate people with well placed propaganda.
So the card goes off the day after tomorrow, I need to physically go to the post office since it needs quite a bit more of postage. And off it goes...
A debt none of us will ever be able to pay.
Okay, now we all agree it's important to express gratitude, which is what nadin's doing.
However, franksolich remains mystified about something else.
Why does this
yenta persist in dishonoring, in shaming, in embarrassing, in humiliating, in disgracing, in parodying, the people and culture who gave her life, by being so stupid?
