Thanksgiving plans
« on: November 19, 2011, 04:37:55 PM »
Okay, here it is, the Saturday before Thanksgiving, and hence time to get the annual tradition going, that of members telling us their plans and hopes for the holiday.

Me, I suppose I'll be at that truck stop for some hours doing some accounting work on Wednesday, Thanksgiving Eve, and then I have to get back here to have dinner with the ancient elderly couple who own this place.  They have lots and lots of children and grandchildren, and so spend the actual day at the home of one of them.

Thanksgiving Day, about noon, I'll be with the neighbors--the neighbor, the neighbor's wife, their 6-year-old twin daughters, their 4-year old son, and an infant son about six months old.  It'll be my first Thanksgiving there without Auntie, the primitive aunt of the neighbor's wife, from Kansas City.  Auntie alas will be spending Thanksgiving in another time and place.

The femme will be in Omaha for five days with one of her sisters, who lives there, shopping, so I'm not in their plans.

The senior business partner will drive all the way here from the midst of the Sandhills, sometime on Thursday.  He might, or might not, make it to the neighbors' for chow.  After that, we'll do something, but I dunno what.  He's staying here until Saturday.

On Saturday night, I'll be working the truck stop, behind the cash-register, so that a regular clerk can have time off with her family.  It sounds odd, a deaf person doing such a job, but generally the only customers are long-distance truck-drivers and law-enforcement personnel, the sorts of people who find it easy to be patient with a deaf person, even if he gives them a Powerball ticket when they've asked for a package of Marlboro cigarettes.

It should be okay.

My Thanksgiving plans are to be in a tryptophan coma by 3:00 p.m. and roll out of bed Friday around the crack o' noon.  :yum:

I'll be visiting my parents Thursday afternoon.  I have a four-day vacation for a change, so instead of heading right back to work on Friday morning I'll probably hang out at home and try to get some other work done.

We are flying back to Wisconsin for the first time in six years to have Thanksgiving with the family.  It will be Carleigh's first Thanksgiving with her extended family.  We will go down to Illinois to visit with my husband's family too.

The only people who know we are coming in for Thanksgiving are our parent's.  It's going to be a surprise for everyone else.  :)

I'm not traveling this year, and it depends on the weather whether family can make it here.  Have one daughter at home who has to work the day before and the day after.  I may work in the morning if anyone really needs treatment.  Otherwise patients seem to appreciate holidays off, too.

We've been invited to eat with several friends, but I think we're going to have a small dinner at home and go to a sledding party later that day.

My grandmother is having fairly major surgery the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, so my mom and aunt will be heading up there on Sunday to help her out with my grandfather (who has Alzheimers) and to just help her do stuff after the surgery.  As a result, we're doing a really low key Thanksgiving.  I'll probably spend most of the weekend trying to decipher organic chemistry

We are going to my in-laws in Tulsa (actually they are outside of Tulsa on a family farm in Adair) and my parents are coming too.

Isn't that unusual, in-laws and in-laws spending a holiday together?

Or perhaps they get along exceptionally well?

Yes they have always got along. Back in high school when I was dating Kevin they used to be on a bowling league together...by choice.

Prayer up for your grandmother and all who will be worrying.

All the best on your organic chemistry class.  I had a real love-hate attitude about it.

My daughter is picking up her best friend and her (friend's) boyfriend at the Tucson airport on Thanksgiving, and they're staying overnight to do sightseeing the next day.  The friend doesn't like turkey, so they're probably doing Chinese for dinner.  My son is working at the ambulance company for the holiday since his son is spending this holiday with his mother.  We get the grandson for Christmas though. :yahoo:

As for hubby and me, probably just going to cook the turkey I bought when I thought there'd be a few extra people to eat it...didn't realize my daughter's friend's boyfriend is super allergic to cats and dogs and thus can't step foot in my abode.  Plus the aforementioned distaste for turkey.  Oh yeah, DD is dropping off her doggie Wednesday evening for us to babysit over the four day weekend while she has her friends visiting. :whatever:

I don't care, I am still roasting a turkey, and making dressing, cranberry sauce, gravy, rolls and yam casserole.  It wouldn't be Thanksgiving without pigging out.  I'm actually going to enjoy this entire upcoming week since hubby is taking comp time-3 days/24 hours and it's all free thanks to his long hours business trip to Korea last month.

The dogs and cats will probably each get some turkey, if they are good.  Or, if they beg loudly enough. :rotf:

Yeah, even though none of them are Jews.
I would have made a ham, but William would probably have to be evacuated from my home for his allergic reaction.  We do have all those pesky dander carrying critters, after all. :p

I take allergy medication every day unless I forget to take it home with me on the weekends, like today.

This cat is so 'tarded.  Just my luck, I get a dumb cat.

All the adult kids have plans this year -- Just Mom, Hubby and me.

Heading for her house so Hubby stopped and ordered a pre made dinner to be picked up Wed. night from McKinnon's a catering Co that also is a Market and Super Butcher Shop.

All their dinners serve 8-10 people, we can split the left overs with Mom and when she has company she can just  freeze, then Microwave  the food and serve an army. Or eat on that dinner for the next 6 months.

Problem, Why do these business not sell dinners for 4-6 people.   Hubby brought home the Menu and I about fell off my chair, price for turkey dinner is $150.  bucks.    What was he thinking, are we going to freeze leftovers and serve them on Christmas day ????

Checking out the prices for other dinners ----turkey is the cheapest dinner, darn one could feed a small reception at a wedding or funeral.  Side dishes and Plates are I believe where they make their money,  the cost for finger sandwiches  36 0f them is over $50.00   I can make the same suckers for less then $20.00 at home.

But then one must take into consideration the cost of a home made dinner today. [so says Hubby]

Turkey, 18 pound frozen and all the work to defrost it, the cost to stuff it and the energy taken to cook it.

1/2 sheet pan of potatoes, the gravy I quart, Cranberry sauce at one quart, I quart each for squash, sweet corn, sweet peas 1 dozen dinner rolls, and a 10 inch pie.

To calm me down from having the vapors on the price to feed just 3 people he spent 30 minutes at the grocery store pricing all items I would have to buy and then prepare to cook for a day or so.

He came home all smiles, the price of food is going up so fast that it would cost me $135.00 to do this myself.

The $15.00 extra was the cost to let someone else do it, he compaired this to having someone else change the oil in his car or me taking clothing into the dry cleaners.

Wish I had known about the catering services years ago when all the kids were home.  All the time I spent in the kitchen I could have spent with family and friends.    Besides if we took Mom to a steak house that one meal would have cost at least $80-90 dollars with little left overs.

Changing my ways, not easy but I am trying in to days economy.

I will be traveling 4 hours north and spending it with my wonderful boyfriend, his children, and his extended family. My kids are going to be with dad this year. He would have let me have them every year since I was the driver behind tradition, but I think it's important for him to forge his own way with his children in this regard. Personally, I think he was avoiding having them on a major holiday, but like I said, I think it's important he stop using me as a crutch in establishing his own way with the children. Besides that, the two of us who really don't like being a part of big crowds are going to make our first attempt to go into the fray on Black Friday/Thursday night--as a team--armed with hot coffee and cash.  :lmao: I also need to get a new washer on Sears Kenmore half off sale that day-my waterpump on mine is leaking water profusely :banghead:

The weekend following that I'll be doing my usual Thanksgiving dinner(old habits die hard--I want Tgiving with my kids too :) I'm VCRing the Macy Parade, have a girlfriend(in the middle of her own divorce) and her kids coming over, my mother will roll in from work around dinner, and my beau may be comign down with his kids too. We are going to have my version of the feast a week later and then put up the tree and the decorations. I'm looking forward to the next two weekends surrounded by a lot of love and warmth of friends and family.  :)

Just me 'n Mrs E, along with the parrots and the dogs.

We might get one of those turkey breasts (enough for two), but no big, drawn-out, spend-all-day-in-the-kitchen deals.

I'll be spending Thanksgiving with the wifes' family.

I'll start preparing for Thanksgiving dinner today...by eating lite for the next 3 days. :-)

Thank you, frank. And I have no doubt it is pleasing to God when we not only come together to thank Him for all He's blessed us with, but do it in the spirit of love and goodwill as He intended. May I also say, I will be saying a prayer for the many other people who cared enough when they knew my kids would not be with me and offered their homes as well. I love that! Back when my ex and I were first together, we invited a good friend of ours to our table when she was not going back to Cali for Thanksgiving that year. To this day I consider her a close friend still and that goodwill has lasted a lifetime. Sure wish the DUers could understand how those little moments of giving and goodwill go so much further to bring us together then their little temper tantrums in the public square.

Enjoy the day, coach! Happy Thanksgiving!

Now that's the truth! :-) I'm not only doing that, but I already did step and a hike with the kids for about 3 miles yesterday. Going to run them on another one today and hit the treadmill for another 5 and plan to hit the gym the entire week in preparation.  :-) Best to come to this time of year armed with some extra space in the button up area.  :-)

I am making dinner at my house this year, for my boyfriend and my Mom.  NO instant/canned anything, dinner the way I want it.  Woohoo!!  The rest of the weekend will be puttering around my house getting stuff cleaned and organized, as I am finished with my 60-70 hour weeks for a while.
