I eat lots of eggs. Milk, not so much, except half&half in my coffee. I really avoid grains, though. Quickest way for me to gain weight is to eat too much grain. Holidays are great for remembering why I don't eat surgary junk. I'm sick of it after New Years. I just love spinach salad and probably eat it 4 or 5 times a week.
If you don't have any muscle it will be much harder to lose weight. Push ups. Hits every upper body muscle you have. I used to hate them but they're so quick.

Exercise, if at all possible, really is the best solution. Diet can only take anybody so far, without the muscle to burn the calories a person will have to live on a restricted diet forever just to maintain.
My slim down solution (that has been working for me):
Avoid sugar and processed grains. In general these are empty calories that don't even really fill you up.
Moderation in everything you eat.
Drink plenty of water, and very little of anything else. Coffee is my main vice here
Exercise daily. At least half an hour, but an hour is better. Find something you enjoy, find a friend to do it with you, and just do it. If you don't have a half an hour at some point in your day to do something active then you really need to look at how you are spending your time.
The more you have to lose, the easier it will come off in the beginning, so with over a hundred pounds he should be able to see good results fairly quickly.
Things like weight watchers and spark people are great for tracking and for accountability.
